New Soarin as good or better then the original, or is it just different?

I'll thrown in my $0.02 here.

The old version of Soarin’ was my favorite attraction at Disney. I rode it 50+ times and loved it every time. When I heard about the update, my feeling was: with all the attractions needing work, updates or replacements all over the resort, why the heck would they change one of the most popular attractions that pretty much everyone loved as is?

I am one of the frequent Disney visitors that likes changes and updates to attractions rather than keeping the nostalgia of the “way it was”. I thought (and still think) the new Test Track is an improvement over the old version. So, I went into the new ride with an open mind. I rode Soarin’ 4 times on our trip over 4th of July - twice without fastpasses so, first off, the new theater is a great addition. The crispness and cleanliness of the picture and sound was also great.

But unfortunately, each time I rode Soarin’ around the world, I liked it less and less. There are several reasons why:

1) I could not get passed how computer generated everything was. I couldn’t stop myself from pointing out what was real and what was fake. Clearly all the animals, people and effects were fake but I felt a lot of the scenery was too – The Taj Mahal obviously was completely CGI. And the bending was awful. We sat in row 1 middle twice and on the sides twice and the Eiffel Tower bending is ridiculous and very noticeable even in the middle.

2) I am not sure why, but I did not get the sense of flying on this version. I felt a lot more like I was watching scenes in an iMax movie from a seat in a theater and the fact that it is mostly CGI, not even a good iMax movie.

3) I did not like the transitions between scenes. It just didn't flow from scene to scene like the old one did. Again it seemed like it was just watching scenes from a movie. The startling gimmicks got old quick.

4) I could not relate to most of the scenes. I have been to many of the places in California and could almost picture myself flying over some of them on a hang glider. I did not get that feeling going over most of the world scenes.

5) The music was always one of my favorite parts of the old show. While they incorporated the old music nicely, it did not have the same crescendo effect the old ride had.

6) After years and years of seeing the old Soarin’ many times, there was always applause as the ride ended and you backed up to your launch spot. Not one of the 4 rides I was on last week received the thunderous applause from the audience at the end. That tells you something.

The new Soarin’ is still a great ride. I like the world concept and some of the effects are neat/cute. I am sure I will ride it again and again but to me, this update was a downgrade. My hope is they clean up the old film and bring it back on occasion or dedicate one of the theaters to California – like a second destination in a airport.

I have to guess that you have been to the Taj Mahal. I haven't but it doesn't look faked to me. Others have said it was, but, I'm not sure how they know.
...

The Taj Mahal is CG, because they are not allowed to fly over it. That's the only part that kind of annoyed me. I actually felt it was the one that had the worst rendering. Most of the other stuff looked real, even if we know it wasn't. It's not going to make me not see it again though.

As a Floridian, I didn't love a ride celebrating CA being imposed on my state. Most people probably didn't care that much. I enjoyed the detail in the photography in the reboot. They got so close to the Pyramids I could really experience the textures! There seemed to be a need to "startle" the viewer at the end of each scene-- like sand blowing from the desert at the end of the pyramid scene. I found it jarring, unnecessary. I think the transitions were better in the original.

I think the original may be gone for good. Each resort's Soarin has a unique ending-- Epcot's ends in Epcot, DLR's ends in DLR, Shanghai's ends in Shanghai. So I see no need to bring the original back. Maybe I'm wrong.

Literally half of Epcot is about things that celebrate other places being "imposed" on Florida.

There is no real argument... it is much better. They did some "faking" to help with transition, other then that I challenge anyone to prove to me that it is all fake. It certainly isn't. Even if it was, it was done spectacularly. Seriously, what does it take to make people happy. It's a beautiful film, filled with real things most will never see in their lifetime, it's fun and even has a subtle amount of thrill in it. You do realize that even in the old one you were looking at a lot of "fake" and, oh, btw, you weren't really hang gliding. Loosen up a little, life is short, try and enjoy some of it. Also, Disney has made a fortune creating things that don't really exist. Snow White was not a real person, nor could the Lion King sing and dance. Mary Poppins couldn't really fly or take 5 foot coat racks out of a 2 ft. satchel and Uncle Albert didn't really float up to the ceiling when he laughed.

Oh good grief. I'm not allowed to have an opinion on which I liked better? You totally missed the point of this discussion.

BTW, when looking at the polar bears reminds you of the old Coke commercials, it's not "done spectacularly".

How "jarring" are we talking win the new transitions? We were going to take my almost three year old on it this October. Now I'm wondering if she will like it if the transitions are startling.

Saw the new version at DCA this summer about 10 times. Overall I liked it better than the old one. I think the transitions are better in the new film. I found the "blink" between scenes in the old one more jarring. The CG doesn't bother me. (I didn't know that about the Taj Mahal. I think it is very pretty but I agree they should have used something they could really fly over.) I also felt like I was flying closer to things on this one than I did in the old one. The ending on the California one bothered me a lot. Ending with it suddenly being Christmas time in the middle of summer, for example, is just odd. And you could tell the Christmas decorations were dated and not like they do now. So I'm glad they changed the ending on each one to end in the park you started in. To me that makes sense. And it gives me a reason to see it at Epcot.

I did laugh though when we saw the Eiffel Tower from the side view. The way it bent over made it look like something out of Toontown! I decided what they really need is a larger screen.

It's good, but we all really really missed the smell of oranges and being able to see the Christmas parade, or any parade, in the Disneyland sequence. We were not really a fan of the new smells. Dirt? Really? We did not mind the CGI Taj Mahal and thought it was a pretty sequence (although Soarin should be about real footage), but none of us could understand why the Eiffel Tower was bent. All in all we liked it, but I would say that we liked some sequences of this one better than the old one, and some sequences of the old one better than this one.

Overall I liked it about the same as the old one but prefer the old movie if they could have just cleaned up the film...

My hope is they clean up the old film and bring it back on occasion...

To be clear, the old "classic" Soarin' Over California version was not dirty.
The old PRINTS (copies of) the film were dirty.

The master (original edited negative) of the film was fine.
But, the physical copies of the film (the "prints") they were showing in the theaters were dirty.

All of the Soarin' theaters now use digital projectors and don't use a film print at all.
No physical film to get dirty.

And, they DO HAVE the classic Soarin', fully clean and clear, in the new digital format that they have shown (and can show again) in the theaters.
(Earlier this year, they ran the classic version (digital clean and clear) for several weeks at WDW before switching to the new version.)

In fact, they could set up any of the theaters to be able to change the presentation and physical effects (how the seats move) with just a few computer keystrokes if they wanted to show the original presentation at any time.

(What they cannot "instantly" do is change the "smells" of the shows as that requires loading different physical "perfumes" (scents)
into the apparatus that sprays the aromas to the guests.)

I'm guessing that they should, or eventually will show both shows.
My son and I loved it. We liked the original, too, but this one felt more grand and meaningful, since we were seeing wonders of the world instead of just getting a tour of California.

I'm a bit amused by the people complaining of aspects of it being "fake." It's a theme park ride in Disney World, lol. You're in a special seat that moves to replicate the feeling of flight, scents are used to make you feel you're really there, & you're watching a giant screen. This is true of both old and new Soarin'. Nothing "authentic" about either one. If someone must have complete authenticity, they need to go to those places themselves. The ride is absolutely convincing while you're on it.

Nobody is saying that either Soarin' - old or new - is the same as actually hang gliding over landmarks. Folks are saying the old real footage is BETTER than CGI. You don’t see a difference? So in your mind, outside of actually going to the Super Bowl in person, to you there is no difference between watching the game live on your big screen TV in HD and watching an EA Sports simulated version of the game on a Sony Playstation?

We like the new one better. The transitions are way better and the placed visited as well. Just "might" see the old film on occasion if possible, but would not go back-no way.

Be interesting to see a list of each place visited and what was CGI in each etc.

Much nicer ending up where you are as well.

this is a good analogy
The thing I loved about the old Soarin is that they were real places with real people in them.
I was excited with this one since I've never traveled to any of those locations, to see the real thing on a screen, and was dissapointed that most of it was fake.
Maybe they didn't get permission to film the Taj Mahal but then they could've picked some other location where they could. And the addition of the fake animals and transitions are not neccessary, IMHO

All the animals in all scenes are CGI, the polar bears, whale, elephants.
All the transitions, obviously fake
The people walking on the Great Wall of China
The Taj Mahal
Tinker Bell is real though :)

Is this really true? Maybe our eyes are just getting old.

Thanks. So what is real? Other than Tink. :rotfl2:

The ones that looked real to me are:
The Matterhorn
Greenland
Neuschwanstein Castle
African Savannah
Sydney
Great Wall of China
Pyramids
Monument Valley, Utah
Fiji
Iguazu Falls
Eiffel Tower
Epcot
It was reported with pictures and videos when they were flying over most of these locations so at least some of the footage is real.
