New Soarin as good or better then the original, or is it just different?

As a Floridian, I didn't love a ride celebrating CA being imposed on my state. Most people probably didn't care that much. I enjoyed the detail in the photography in the reboot. They got so close to the Pyramids I could really experience the textures! There seemed to be a need to "startle" the viewer at the end of each scene-- like sand blowing from the desert at the end of the pyramid scene. I found it jarring, unnecessary. I think the transitions were better in the original.

I think the original may be gone for good. Each resort's Soarin has a unique ending-- Epcot's ends in Epcot, DLR's ends in DLR, Shanghai's ends in Shanghai. So I see no need to bring the original back. Maybe I'm wrong.

Personally I loved it! Yes, some of it is digital but I still love it. Although I enjoyed the old film and miss the orange grove smell, I really enjoyed the new film just as much

In my opinion, worse. It's all fake. Some entire locations are all digital, and to me it's super obvious and takes me out of the ride. The world is full of enough marvelous sights that disney didn't have to fake it.
1000% agree with you. If I didn't see reports of the helicopters flying over the locations I would've guessed it was all fake. I really don't like the CGI animals and the transitions. A shame cause the sound and video is much better.
I would still ride it but I was happy I got to ride the original Soarin with the new and improved movie

I think if anything the original might eventually come back in Disneyland, since that is where it belongs. They have two theaters there so they could make one the new one and one the old. That does seem like a lot of extra effort. Not sure if they'd ever do it unless the AP holders demanded it.

I liked it. The old film or projector was looking really poor. So maybe the new projector with the old film would have been better, but I never got to see that. I know some of the stuff was fake, but there were fake things in the old one too, like the golf ball. I wish they hadn't done the Taj Mahal, since it had to be full CG. They could have picked somewhere else. What I don't like is the obvious curvature if you are not sitting in the middle section. It's possible that the old movie had this problem too, but it wasn't obvious since everything was a landscape, no tall straight objects.

I didn't like the startle moments either. It got really old. (I saw it at dca but I assume they are the same)

Fwiw it was weird to have a movie about CA in CA, too. I actually resisted all of DCA for two years because having a themepark about CA in CA was so weird lol.

We are fans the old Soarin', but agree that it was strange to have a movie only showing California. We really love the new one! It's neat to see different parts of the world and the new soundtrack is really good. We really like that it ends in Epcot. We're glad they saved Patrick in the pre-show too! Overall: :thumbsup2

I haven't seen the new one yet (will in September), but I know that the old one was "old." Every time I rode it, I couldn't help but to constantly notice how low quality the video was. The transitions from scene to scene also didn't flow together well, so the "surprise" or "scary" transitions in the new video are a welcome change in my book.

My vote is for better. I honestly went in thinking that I would not like it, but to my surprise, we really enjoyed it. I give it two thumbs up. I can't wait to see it a again.

I just saw the new version at DCA, going in with no expectations. And I liked the old version better. I did like the transitions in the new version; however, the CGI was terrible. From the moment I saw the polar bears I was no longer immersed. Also, I felt the original got closer to the subjects, meaning that you felt your feet would hit them whereas you were higher up in the new version. I could have been watching on TV rather than suspended in a glider.

There is no real argument... it is much better. They did some "faking" to help with transition, other then that I challenge anyone to prove to me that it is all fake. It certainly isn't. Even if it was, it was done spectacularly. Seriously, what does it take to make people happy. It's a beautiful film, filled with real things most will never see in their lifetime, it's fun and even has a subtle amount of thrill in it. You do realize that even in the old one you were looking at a lot of "fake" and, oh, btw, you weren't really hang gliding. Loosen up a little, life is short, try and enjoy some of it. Also, Disney has made a fortune creating things that don't really exist. Snow White was not a real person, nor could the Lion King sing and dance. Mary Poppins couldn't really fly or take 5 foot coat racks out of a 2 ft. satchel and Uncle Albert didn't really float up to the ceiling when he laughed.

The fake stuff took away from the beautiful scenes some. I think the Taj Mahal scene was entirely fake. Overall I liked it about the same as the old one but prefer the old movie if they could have just cleaned up the film. I do wish they would correct the camera angle so the images would not bend. Other than that I can live with it I guess. We did get to go on the new theater C.

I like the new one, but I agree there are too many Computer generated scenes. I saw it three times last week, and that was plenty. Did not wish to see it again.

Haven't seen the new one yet. Any hidden Mickey's in it like the old old?

I have to guess that you have been to the Taj Mahal. I haven't but it doesn't look faked to me. Others have said it was, but, I'm not sure how they know. Sure, the whale didn't just happen to jump up and splash the camera anymore then that golf ball with Mikey's picture on it was actually hit by somebody as it flew overhead. It seems to me that they got a lot of criticism about how the old one had no transition, it just went from one scene to another. Now we don't like the fake transition. I agree that it would be cool if they could have trained that elephant to throw up all that dust toward us, but, it seems like a bit much to ask for. It's one thing or the other folks. The Mickey fireworks explosion is just as real as the original. China paid for most of that film and I see no reason for them to fake the Great Wall. The Polar Bears in the glacier scene was fake, but, done very well and very realistically.

The distortion is not the camera angle it is how your eyes see the scene on a curved screen with a highly precise digital image. Small price to pay for the quality that it displays for 99% of the film. If you want things to be real perhaps a small independent trip to all those places would be the way to go.

I would think that three times in one week should be enough for anybody. You know the old saying.... to much of a good thing.

It's different, but I actually think I like the new one better. Such a great memory riding the new Soarin' with my family on this past trip! I love love love the ending scene :)
