Do I ever use them? NopeThen use bold or italics. See those are actually correct uses of adding emphasis. But to each their own. If you want to pretend you look cool writing like that go ahead.

That's my point.I don't really care how people want to ephasize things... I use /this/ or *this* personally, but I see nothing wrong with ~this.
