After much deliberation and reading and rereading of the previous thread that got way out of hand. I have decided to change the rules of the contest. I listened to what everyone had to say, and thought about it ALL night long, and I have come to a decision. I WILL allow changes to color (saturation, hue, white balance, etc), I will allow changes to sharpness, brightness, contrast, etc. I will allow noise reduction. I will NOT under any circumstances allow pictures that appear unnatural, or that has had the colors changed so much that they do not resemble anything near what you would see with your own eyes were you there. I will not allow cropping, cutting, cloning, pasting, borders, or anything else that in ANY way shape or form changes the photo.

This is how the rules will be listed:

Image Modifications:
Minor digital enhancement is permitted, but images that have been significantly modified or appear unnatural will be disqualified.

Not Permitted:

No borders or frames may be added to images.
Adding or replacing elements in an image is not permitted.
Artistic filters are not permitted.

Permitted Modifications:

Images may be cropped and rotated as necessary.
Images may be resized as long as the aspect ratio is maintained
Red-eye removal and spot editing
One-step enhancement (such as "AutoFix", "QuickFix", "Auto Levels", etc.)
Use of filters to sharpen, soften, blur, despeckle, or remove noise.
Use of corrective functions to improve the natural appearance of the image, such as levels, contrast, brightness, curves, intensity, tone, hue, saturation, lightness, value, color balance, and tint.

I hope that will work for everyone. I was truthfully just trying to keep things as simple and fair as possible for everyone. It seems that is just too hard to do, so instead I give. You can do whatever you feel you need to in order to get the picture you want the way you want it, and it will be left to the voters to decide if they want to vote for entries that have been "tweaked". Because the option is I try and police the editing which is just not going to happen, or I risk alienating all of the entrants who shoot in RAW and don't have any non-edited photos to enter, and I don't want to do that either. Is it fair to all of those without the expensive cameras or editing equipment, probably not, but I don't know what else can be done.

In all honesty though, it's not like I am changing the way the contest has been running over the past 2 years anyway. The "tweaked" photos were still being entered and those without the ability or know how to do the same were still entering photos, so I hope everyone will still continue to do so. Truthfully, I absolutely LOVE running this contest. I don't want to stop doing it anytime soon. I hope that everyone will continue to enjoy it also and continue entering their photos for everyone to see and enjoy!!

Thanks for all your hard work on these contests and keeping them fun and open to everyone!

One little comment/question on the "new" rules:

"I will not allow cropping, cutting, cloning, pasting, borders, or anything else that in ANY way shape or form changes the photo."

vs.

"Images may be cropped and rotated as necessary."

Thanks, again!!

Thanks, Dana. You have obviously put a lot of thought and effort into this. Well done!

You my friend, are gonna drive me INSANE!! :headache:;) I promise to edit everything as necessary once I get a chance to post it all on the "OFFICIAL |RULE". However, since you had to ask, yes you can still crop your images. But no cutting, cloning, pasting, borders, or anything else that in ANY way shape or form changes the photo.

thanks Dana & if i ever enter hopefully i'll know how to do it:rotfl2: but i enjoy voting and the contest in general so thanks for all your efforts.

I'm not trying to cause any problems, everything looked *great* except that one bit. In fact, it's probably a lot more lenient than should be expected.

Thanks for everything! :rotfl:

Dana,

You are one of the most sensitive and open people I know. You have taken a situation that could have spiraled out of control and instead you have attempted to take into consideration everyone's point of view. It is users such as yourself that make it a pleasure to moderate a board such as this. Thanks for your caring and your understanding and the countless hours that you spend managing these weekly contests.

Please let me know if you need any help modifying the sticky threads or links to the contests.

Jeff

I hate to ask but I'm sure someone wil eventually

b&w/sepia in or out..??

and thanks for all you do...

Hopefully the new rules will make your life easier :thumbsup2 !

While its always fun watching the latest debate of the contest rules popcorn:: I'm hoping this won't come up again for a while (because you know it will - I think the next debate should be about whether images shot using image stabilization should be allowed, or perhaps only hand held shots, nothing on a tripod :rotfl: ).

Thanks again for taking the time to run the contests!

after that horizontal or vertical shots

Dana,

Thank you very much for all the hard work and consideration for everyone.

I have an idea for the next debate. To make things more equal, I believe that everyone should resize their shots down to 100x75 and then resize them back to 800x600. That would take away the advantage of fine detail from better cameras! :thumbsup2 :lmao: :rotfl2: And I agree that all those crazy tripoders should be banned! :rotfl:

Now if I can just find the time, while at home, to find a picture to enter this week. I have missed the past two contest being too busy with vacation, vacation recovery, and school starting. :upsidedow

and to get rid of any taint of "pro" vs "amature" i really think no one between the ages of 3 and 98 should be eligible for any of the cash prizes:rolleyes1

I think that with these new changes, and the new "photo editing/photoshop" contest sponsored by Master Mason, everyone should be well covered.

Looks like we'll have to find something else to "debate". I'll get us started: All you Nikon shooting, Ford driving, McDonalds eating people out there can go take a flying leap because us Canon shooting, Dodge driving, Burger King eating people RULE!!!

On second thought, lets all just go out and shoot some pictures.

You shoulda gotten a HEMI...

But if you have a tow truck you can take both FORDS that have been sitting in my dads garage for a couple years now.

Actually currently a chevy guy. My dad worked for them all, one thing he taught us is that they are just machines to move you from one place to the other, get the best one that fits your needs and drive it till it doesn't run or doesn't fit the needs.

In the Big SUV class, right now chevy produces the best IMO, so that's what I got, the next one will be whatever it is at that time.
