New "Mom's to Be" Thread!

I agree. I also have a friend that was diagnosed with it and she said the changes she made were really good for her and that she would probably keep them up even after the baby was born. Good luck to you. I know I'd be freaking out at the thought of no sugar.

Odd symptoms: The only odd one I have is that my two center toes on my left foot regularly go to sleep. It's the weirdest thing. Baby must hit a nerve or something that's connected??

I *think* baby has dropped in the past few days. Can't really tell when I look in the mirror, but his kicks are much lower and I can eat a little more now.

I had another prenatal appointment yesterday and it didn't go so great.

My urine is good - no sugar, no protein, nothing bad. I haven't gained any weight, I've actually lost 3 pounds since 10 days ago when I was at the doctor last. Last time I was seen they did a random glucose and it was not good. My OB had me check my sugar 6 times a day until my next appointment (2 weeks). My doctor didn't like my blood sugars from the past 2 weeks and my Hemoglobin A1C wasn't too great (that tests for overall sugar management). I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes - already - at 10 weeks pregnant. I am being referred to to an endocrinologist who specializes in GD. I also have to begin seeing my OB every 2-3 weeks rather than every 4-5 weeks. I can have no sugar now - none - and only 1 serving of "white" carbs like rice and bread daily. I also have to limit my fruit and fruit juice intake. My OB was talking about how if I didn't get this under control my baby could have serious problems, the placenta could have problems, and I could have problems. It's a pretty scary thing even though I know it can hopefully be controlled. I was just so shocked because normally this doesn't develop until late in pregnancy, not 10 weeks.

Edited to add: If anyone is dealing this, I would love any info you have on good things to eat, ways to keep sugars in check, ect...

My sugar before meals should be 80-110 * mine has been anywhere from 52-186 in the last two weeks.

My sugar 2 hours after meals should be 100-140 * mine has been anywhere from the low 60's - 275.

I'm mostly lurking on this thread these days, but I wanted to let you know that my DH has diabetes, so if you'd like any hints or tips on the diabetic diet to let me know and I'll see if I can help. I mostly follow the diet myself, just to make it easier for DH to stick with it.

We've gone to almost 100% whole grain foods to deal with the "white" carb issue, and while it was a little bit of an adjustment, we both feel healthier for it. The whole grain stuff doesn't cook in the same way, so have patience while you get used to it. But there are some really good whole grain pastas out there, and we make muffins all the time with whole grain flour that turn out yummy. We use unsweetened apple sauce in place of sugar for a lot of baking (it also replaces the oil), and it gives a nice flavor - especially in things like muffins or banana bread or pumpkin bread. DH really misses orange juice, but otherwise he's happy with this diet.

There are TONS of resources out there for recipes, and sometimes you can find information on the various restaurants and what is "safe" to order and what isn't. Most restaurants can give you specific nutritional information if you need it.

Let me know if you'd like more info or have any questions - I know it's a tough adjustment, but you really will feel healthier and of course the most important thing is that your baby will be healthier, too.

C-section, and would totally do it again if we ever have another child..I had a great recovery and it truly wasn't that bad! I was in no shape to deal with labor..the few contractions I had before the c/s killed me! I went into labor and leaked fluid in the hospital (I was there for monitoring).

Thanks for all the kinda words regarding the GD ladies - it's going to take some getting used to, but I know I can do this and keep me and the baby healthy!!

is semi-natural a category? I am all for pain relief but did not have an epidural w/ my last two...by the end I was ready for one ;) I am not sure what I will be able to do this time. I seem to be getting wimpier in my old age.

I want drugs too!! IF not then this kid is not coming out!!:lmao:

Does anyone have any suggestion for books on babies 1st years?

LOL I feel the same way..no drugs no baby!!

:offtopic: Your chi is so cute!! I have one too! Are you worried about how your doggie will be with the new baby? My dog doesn't do really well with strangers & I'm starting to worry.

As far as books goes, I love the American Academy of Pediatrics book, Caring for Your Baby and Young Child- Birth to Age 5. It has a lot of good info! :thumbsup2 I never got much into the "What to Expect" books. I used a pregnancy guide called Great Expectations plus a couple of Multiples books.

A lot of people like the Dr. Sears books too!

Yes I am worried about the dog and the baby. I am afraid Rusty will be jealous since he has been our only baby...but he does very well with kids so that makes me feel a little better. I think he will end up loving and protecting the baby as he does DH and I now. If we have problems with him adjusting then I am going to see to everything that we can do to keep them both happy. He is a very good dog...very mild mannered which we are very lucky because alot of chihuahuas can be hyper and yippy which he is not thankfully.

Very glad I went natural with this birth as with the last 2 before it. This one was my second waterbirth and I can´t imagine I would ever give birth on "land" again.

With DD (), she came early, so they gave me the epi in anticipation of something going wrong. Let's just say that I "loved everybody":hippie: !

With DS#1, I had every intention of going natural, but had a horrible midwife. She was busy with outside obligations and when I had reached "that point", she informed me that it was going to take all night. Needless to say, that when I received my epi a short while later, I was completely dialated and now to numb to push. After 3 1/2 miserable hours, I finally got feeling back and got him out.

With DS#2, (and after kicking the midwife to the curb), I went completely natural, delivered his (large) head and hand at the same time and left my body for like 3 hours. I could barely move and I was shaking. After that 3 hours, though, I never felt any pain and wasn't even sore!

So, we will be going natural again.::yes:: I hope...

With DD, I knew I wanted drugs, and I got an epi. And a while delivering your first is difficult (it took 1.5 hours of pushing), I was stupid enough to refuse the episomoty (sp). I regretted that decision for 3 weeks.

With DS, I had my DH and BFF who is an RN with me. Let's just say she was on top of my meds and I felt nothing.... for 6 hours, nothing. I needed help walking to the bathroom because I couldn't feel my legs.;)

With #3, I'm hoping for more drugs....:thumbsup2

How is everyone dealing with the heat?:faint:

So, here's the question of the day:

Breastfeeding or formula?
