my fiance and I just became DVC members a few weeks ago and with joining we recieved points that must be used by ** (apparently we can't bank them for future use) so I thought we might be able to rent/transfer them to someone who could use them since we won't be able to make a trip to Disney before then.

My question is: What is the difference between renting and transfering?

renting the reservation is still yours to control. you have to make all of the arrangements. maybe the person is not a dvc member. so you have to call ms make the reservation.

transfering the person is for sure a dvc member you transfer the points to there account and they are free todo whatver they woudl liek with the points. they can make as many reservation as they want. they can cancel. reschedule. its up to them since the points are technically now theirs to do as they like....

as the other poster said:

renting-

*you can rent to dvc owners or non-owners (as an aside, you cannot rent "points", you can only rent a reservation.)
*you still control the reservation- the renter (owner or not) cannot call to change anything about the reservation so you may need to provide additional services to make changes and add the DDP or whatever
*you are still responsible for the reservation - if the renter trashes the room or leaves without paying a bill, DVC reserves the right to come looking for you

transferring-

*you can only transfer pts to other dvc owners
*once the pts are gone (transferred), they are gone
*you are not responsible for the pts after they are gone
*the rules technically say that you cannot accept consideration (money) for a transfer

Since your points are banked they cannot be transferred so the only option will be for you to rent a reservation to someone.

OK now I have a question. We bought BLT 2 weeks ago and also got the extra year's worth of points as an incentive. We plan on taking our longer trip in August 2011 using those bonus points. The salesman said our use year ends in October. We banked those points right away; so we can wait till next summer to use the bonus points, right? I thought he said we have 1 year to use them. I'm just a bit confused, but sooo excited! Thanks for any clarification:)

If you have a November use year and you banked last year's points, you can now use them from November 1, 2010 through October 31, 2011.

Since there are no November UY's I'm guessing it's an Oct UY that you have. This means that your points will expire on Sept 30, 2011. Since you're planning an Aug 2011 trip they will still be available to use then. When you book your reservation just be certain to ask MS to use your banked points first. They usually do but it's best to double check.

Did you buy resale or direct?
If you bought direct and the contract starts with the prior year's points (for example you have a Nov UY and received 2009 points good from Nov 1 2009 - Oct 31 2010) Disney has been allowing those points to be banked (so then could be used Nov 1, 2010 - Oct 31, 2011) even though you are past the banking deadline. If this is the case the 2009 points could be transferred but would probably be difficult since they expire soon. Or they could be banked (since Disney allows this for direct purchases) and then used by yourself or rented.
If you bought resale and the points can't be banked it either means the prior owners didn't bank before the deadline or the points were already banked and cannot be done so again. If either one of these is the case the points could be rented but not transferred.

So Banked points can be used by yourself or rented to be used before expiration date.
Non-banked points could be used by yourself, rented, or transferred and possibly banked (if you bought direct).

Hope that helps along with the other info PP's posted. I know you can't post the # of points in this thread but if you let everybody know whether you bought direct or resale and UY we can try to provide a more clear answer specific to your situation. :)
