New DVC member has question about points

We just purchased at AKV while on vacation at WDW last week. As part of the agreement we were given our allotment of points for Dec 08 and Dec 09 which could not be used until May 09 because Kidani Village didn't open until then. My question concerns the Dec 08 points. Can those points be banked for use in 2010 or are they just bankable for 2009? I'm assuming they expire in Dec 09, if so then there is no point in banking them for 09 because we would have to use them anyway.
While I understand the banking/borrowing system, I'm a little confused about what to do with the Dec 08 points...I don't want to lose them!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

they don't give points in advance - sure you didn't get developer points to be used now.

your dec 08 points are available now also - but don't think you need to use them.

dec 08 goes until dec 09 - then you get dec 09 points.

so you could bank them and use both in 2010

dec 2009 goes until dec 2010.

developer points needs to be used NOW.

Your Dec. '08 points will be good from 12/1/08 until 11/30/09. Your '09 points will be good from 12/1/09 until 11/30/10. You could borrow your '08 points to use now, leave them in the '08 Use Year (12/1/08 to 11/30/09) or bank them into your '09 Use Year (12/1/09 to 11/30/10). If you bank them they will have the same expiration date as your '09 points and you'll have to use them by 11/30/10. If you do not use them for a reservations that ends by that date you'll lose them.

As spiceycat said, make sure you're not talking about Developer Points. Those have different rules.

Thanks! you've been very helpful! We did get developer "bonus points"...they have to be used by July of 09 and if we use them for WDW, they have to be used at SSR.

Having a December use year can make it a little confusing, because the bulk of the use year is actually in the following calendar year. For example, eleven months of your December '08 use year fall in the '09 calendar year. I just came back from a trip where I stayed at AKV -- and even though the trip was in '08, my use year is still '07, and it will be until the end of November.

That being said, there is another wrinkle in that the unit your points represent is in the Kidani building, which won't be open until next May. I believe that means that you won't actually have access to your December '08 use year points until May of '09, when your unit comes online. I also believe that means those points are not available for borrowing-or-banking until that date. I may be mistaken in that, so if anyone else knows more, please post!

yea until May - that is all you get until then - as jbrowna mentioned.

see when your use begins - it should definitely be in your contract.

the bonus points - these are just points for you to use until you can really use your points.

if you can't use the bonus points - then go rent them NOW.

they can't be banked.

so if you aren't planning on going to WDW between now and next July - definitely go rent them.

that say once they are gone - they are gone - you can't decide later to go during spring break next year or Dec of this year (well you can't get a reservation now for dec anyway)

If I bank all my home resort points of one year to use the next year, do I have to stay in my home resort? Can I use banked points and stay at another resort? I just finished reading about banking and borrowing in the public offering statement booklet and it sounded like I could only use them for my home resort. I hope I'm just confused. My husband didn't read it that way.....
