NEW Disney Gift Card Deals and More.

There's no way they're taking a loss on that many GCs which means even if that deal was at their cost price it's insane that other major retailers only have a few percentage points off as their normal sales. Assuming others like BJs and Sam's can get it at the same pricing as BB they should routinely be putting them on sale for at least 10% off. Unless they have to get some sort of permission from Disney for that...who knows the logistics.

I think most of us feel that pretty much everything in the world "should" be sold for at least a 10 - 20% discount, but that isn't going to happen.

There are many costs that go into the sale of these gift cards that you don't realize, including the company that delivers the egift cards (even the biggest companies are still using incomm or Blackhawk network to deliver their egift cards), the costs they incur for stolen gift cards, the costs for their customer service to handle problems with the gift cards.

The fact that we rarely even see 10% discounts on Disney gift cards (not to mention 15 - 20%) says the profit probably isn't that much at a 10% discount and it is not worth it for most stores to sell it at that rate.

Did you or anyone happen to get the 20 back in rewards on 200 for just ordering the gift cards? It seems there was some confusion as to whether that would work or not.
It said it excludes gift cards so I didn’t take a chance on my order. But rest assured the rewards will be used on gift cards :)

Yes but the stores that are selling them don’t have those costs. They basically just have the costs of floor space and setting them up in their POS. It is usually a third party that comes in and restocks them as well.

We were talking about egift cards here which are almost always processed by a 3rd party (Blackhawk or Incomm - I have had both Target and Staples customer service reps tell me that their egift cards are processed by a 3rd party vendor), but even on regular gift cards, the store pays the credit card transaction fee and the store is also probably liable for stolen gift cards or fraudulent charges. And if a third party comes in and restocks, I am sure the 3rd party charges for that too.

The main point is that the profit margin on gift cards is usually not that much, which is why almost none of the stores will allow gift card to gift card purchase anymore. The main way they make money on gift cards is the hope that some people will lose the gift card or forget to use it.

Yes you were talking about e-gift cards but the PP mentioned BJ’s and Sam’s. While Sam’s sells both physical and e-gift cards all of BJ’s are physical cards. This is why I mentioned the stores.

Stores have lots of items that have low profit margins but with as many companies that will advertise sales on gift cards I can’t believe that GC are one of them.

Costco regular sells GC for 20% off in our area for certain restaurants and regularly discounts SW airlines by 14%.

I don’t consider cc fees as that is the cost of doing business in these days for merchants. I’m not sure who would be responsible for fraudulent charges or stolen gift cards but insurance another necessity for businesses and should cover whoever is impacted.

Doctor of credit had a post on gift card profits 5 years ago which I have linked to below. The numbers have probably changed a little over the 5 years, but the gist is that the profit margin for the retailer is low. If you assume the numbers from the doc post are around the same, your local grocery store is making 5% on the gift card and paying around 2 - 3% in credit card fees. While you may not consider cc as fees, I can guarantee you the store does. I don't know what the numbers were 5 years ago, but I'm going to say that nowadays upwards of 90% of all gift card sales are credit card transactions.

The risk factor on gift cards is also much higher for the store. It is why you can go into your grocery store and buy a $100 gift card and they might ask for ID, but buy $150 in groceries and they won't ask for ID. People are rarely using stolen credit cards for groceries. I know I was told by a Staples manager that when a stolen credit card is used, it comes directly off the store profit. Maybe some of the largest stores buy insurance for this, but again, it would be a cost that would be factored into the gift card profit.

Sure, there are some git cards like the restaurant ones at Costco that are being heavily discounted by the stores to promote themselves. I'm sure Southwest also heavily discounts their gift cards, and I can speculate reasons why they do this. But I can guarantee you that Disney is not regularly selling their gift cards to stores at 15 to 20% off and the store is eating all the profit.

Was that manager a former Disney bus driver? :)

It is certainly possible that a manager knows, but usually local store management are only seeing sales data and not necessarily profit and usually comparing month to month. Someone on the corporate end would most likely know the answer.

This was a very good read thank you

I haven't seen the $20 reward yet but I think somebody posted that the rewards are supposed to hit the account on Dec. 9.

I'm not sure if I'll qualify because someone mentioned gift cards are excluded...but the gift card deals were linked to the ad on the BJ's website showing the $20 reward on a $200 purchase so I figured it was worth a shot!

I'll report back if I see the reward in my account :)

Wow, Shoprite coming through with the big savings for our upcoming trip. This will total $600 DGC at 20% between mine and wife’s ShopRite cards. We also picked up a few DGC for 15% off in November, along with our free turkey for thanksgiving.

Holy Moly, are they trying to turn over GC stock or something? As a regular weekly SR shopper, they're just giving me money. :rotfl2:

Last year, they did this same deal the Thanksgiving week thru Cyber Monday (11/19 - 11/27), and then the weeks of 12/3 - 12/9 and 12/10 - 12/16. So it is pretty much the same this year except there is one less week between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, which is why it ended up being 3 weeks in a row.

If it follows the pattern of last year (and there is no guarantee that it will), they will not have the deal again after next week.

Is the BJs offer really this good right now ($93.99 for $100 GC)? Warning, I am not a current BJs member, but I might join again if it's really ~6% off (I thought this ended on black friday, but it currently shows like this on the page, but when I click view more, I can't see it, since I'm not a BJs member).

Yes, that is the deal right now. They do have a free 1 day membership if you aren't already a member.

They also have a $15 1 year membership deal through Groupon right now.

I do agree with some of the commenters here that I'm not sure that Best buy putting a "very limited amount" of Disney gift cards on sale for 20% off for around 3 minutes really accomplished much good will for their company. These type of sales never make sense to me, they probably annoy the thousands of people who couldn't get their order done in those 3 minutes more than the goodwill of the few hundred who did get their order in. What about all the people who work during the day and can't be on their phones at exactly noon? I guess they figure most people won't delete the app afterwards so maybe that was the goal?

Even Pepper seems to have figured out it is better to have smaller sales that are available to everyone than having large sales that sell out in 3 minutes which is why they lowered Sam's Club down to 5X points for the last 2 weeks.
