Okay, so now that I'm a Curves convert, I had to pick up Gary Heavin's book today at Sam's (he's the founder & CEO of Curves). It looks like it's going to be an interesting read.
One thing I found very intriguing was that he offers two different diet plans in the book. One is for Carbohydrate-Sensitive people and one is for Calorie-Sensitive people. He has a list of "symptoms" and two different tests to help you determine which you might be. Well, I scored a near-perfect on the Carb-Sensitive test (and am *not* Calorie-Sensitive).
This shouldn't surprise me at all; I've been taken off sugar in the past to try to control my IBS (it worked; it's now in remission so I don't think that's an issue), and when I've done the 8-hour glucose tests, I don't test diabetic, but I *do* have blood sugar on the high side. My dr. called it "pre-diabetic". My dad is diabetic, and that's one place I *don't* want to go -- I know I've mentioned that before.
Heavin's Curves diet sounds very similar to what I know about Atkins (which is, admittedly, very little). I've been doing WW and am guilty of using my points on not-so-good stuff. My one true addiction is Dr. Pepper. I had 7 (!) points' worth of the stuff today out of my 20-27 allowed points. That's 1/3 of my daily allotment on carbonated liquid sugar!
So I think I'm coming to the conclusion that I may have to accept a greatly-reduced carb lifestyle. I have to do more research, but I'm already mourning the idea of losing my sweets. *Sigh*
