new and confused

We just returned from our first trip to disney and purchased a vacation club at 160 points for a family of 3. I am still within the 10 days to cancel this contract. I am wondering if it is hard to get reservations closer to the dates (feb for June travel) or if everything will be booked before then. Our vacation time for the year is never approved before the middle of Feb for the year.

My second question is living in Texas, I was interested in booking some of the locations to ski in colorado, go to Branson or Hot Springs (places where we can drive in a day instead of flying) Has anyone had problems getting reservations a few months from traveling for the hotels that are not Disney?

Thanks in advance for any help/ advice you can give. I am trying to decide if this is right for us. I read about the new booking policies 11 & 7 months out and am thinking if you are having trouble getting vacations for the summer months that far out it must be impossible to get them closer to the time of travel.

I'm not an owner yet, but I hope I'm answering this right.

You need a use year that would allow you to bank your points and book the gateway collection 4 months prior to your points expiring. You can't book the gateway collection hotels within 4 months of your points expiring from what I understand. You also need a use year that allows you to bank your points in March or later. That way if you don't get your vacation approved in Feb you have time to do something with those points. I'm thinking a Dec UY would work for your situation. Hopefully a more seasoned DVC'er can verify that. It gives you plenty of time to bank unused points, but still allows you to use them for other hotels in the summer without running into the "no booking other properties" 4 months prior to expiration.

If you are not picky you should not have a problem getting a reservation at 4 months out. If you want BC or a GV or certain BWV categories you may be unhappy. 2 br/studios can also become scarce at many of the resorts.

I just booked 5 days in a 1br OKW and waitlisted and got 2 days at BC in august 2 months out if that helps give you an indication.

As for using points for outside DVC I figure you get about 40-60 cents on the dollar in value.

With this said now is the time to “back out" if you are still unsure.
