NEVER AGAIN! A holiday family vacation report...

Did it get quiet around here or is it just me? :rolleyes1

Hmm, it does seem quiet... perhaps my new update will get people talking again!

I will allow you to use this picture.....

Thanks Shocker, I think that might come in handy! ;)

Day 5, morning (some of these photos are stolen from previous trips as well, I didn't take my camera out as early as I thought... )

New Years Eve started out bright and early for us. The forecast called for this to be the warmest day of the week, and we were really excited to finally have some nice weather. :thumbsup2 The whole group made it to the bus stop a little bit before 7:00, and very shortly we were off to… Hollywood Studios!

We were at DHS and through bag check by 7:15am, and were 2nd in line at the turnstile. The CMs started letting us in at about 7:40, and as always, I took all the tickets and began to maneuver through the crowd to get up to the actual rope and begin the trek to TSM. I made it up to the rope quickly, and DH & the family were pretty close behind. The rope dropped at exactly 8:00, and we were herded like cattle towards Pixar Place.

I hopped in the FP line, while DH & the family made their way to the entrance to the standby line. They opted to wait for me outside the queue, because a CM was telling people not to get in line without their whole group. I believe our FP return was around 10am! I caught up, and we got in the standby line… where we soon encountered the rudest guests we’ve ever come across on a WDW trip. As we approached the entrance into the building, another family waved us ahead of them – they were waiting for their FP runners to catch up. Mom, MIL, BIL, and I went past them, and as dad & DH were trying to pass, their FP runner caught up and they jumped in front of dad & DH. Dad politely asked them to move out of the way so that he could catch up with his wife in the ECV, and the FP runner was incredibly rude, telling my dad that “your family can just stop and wait for you, like my family stopped to wait for me.” My dad was pretty upset, since we'd actually gotten in the line as a group, but he held his tongue (which he almost never does - must be the Disney magic!) and just continued behind this group. Of course, we had to stop and let their group of 12+ in front of us. (Thanks to the ECV/wheelchair access line, we still ended up on the ride before them… this made me very happy for some reason, LOL). TSM is one of my favorite rides, and one of only 3 or 4 things that I actually enjoy at DHS, so of course we had a great time. DH beat my score on this trip through.

After TSM, we decided to get some breakfast, so we headed to Starring Rolls. I don’t remember what everyone ordered, but everyone was happy with breakfast. We sat there for a bit, eating and talking, until our FP window reopened and I could go get FPs for Rockin’ Rollercoaster. I headed down Sunset Blvd. about 10 minutes early. According to my Twitter feed, I got RnRC FPs at 9:12am with a return time for 1:00pm, and the standby waits at RnRC & Tower of Terror were both 75 minutes! :scared1:

After returning to the group, we decided to use the FPs for Lights, Motors, Action! that were being given out that morning, so we headed back to the stadium. MIL & BIL stopped to watch the HSM “show,” and almost didn’t find us when they got to the LMA! stadium – we were up in the handicapped-accessible seating, which was a great place to sit, and I got some good pictures. We enjoy this show, but we don't feel the need to do see it very often.

The show lasts about 30 minutes, so we were out of the stadium by 11:00 or so. Our FPs for TSM were valid, so we decided to head back over there and ride again. I believe my dad headed back to SSR for a nap after LMA. On our way back to Pixar Place, we noticed that Great Movie Ride had a 5 minute wait posted, and MIL wanted to ride, so we hopped in line. We saw this guy outside - DH's favorite!

IMG_2739.jpg

Soon, we were on the Great Movie Ride.

IMG_2743.jpg

We had the gangster. I’ve only ever had the gangster on GMR. Maybe someday I’ll get the cowboy. I only really enjoy this ride in the heat of the summer – it needs a bit of updating I think.

We made it back to TSM a bit before noon – FPs were gone for the day, and the standby line was at 120 minutes. I rode with mom this time, and beat her soundly… DH rode with his brother, and MIL rode by herself.

IMG_2745.jpg

After getting off TSM, I ran down Sunset Blvd to get FPs for ToT – the return time was 4:00pm. Standby was at 110 minutes on both ToT and RnRC at this point. I grabbed a pretzel on my way back to the group, and found that DH had purchased the two pins we wanted while I was away.

I believe the next thing we did was the Backlot Tour. I would have skipped it, but mom & MIL both wanted to ride it. This is another one that really needs some updating, especially since DHS is no longer an active movie studio.

IMG_2751.jpg

IMG_2762.jpg

DHS is really my least-favorite park, because it’s just so difficult to get from one place to another. All the other parks seem fairly connected and well planned, but DHS is just… odd in its layout, and always results in so much walking. After the Backlot Tour, we headed back over to RnRC to use our FPs. Mom sat this one out – I don’t think I had even gotten her a FP because I knew she wouldn’t ride… or maybe we gave her FP away. I don’t really remember. I absolutely love RnRC, and this was about the point that BIL finally started to act like he was enjoying himself – he’s a thrill-ride junkie, and there aren’t a whole lot of thrill rides at WDW.

RnRC.jpg

By the time we finished, we were getting pretty hungry, so we stopped on Sunset Blvd for lunch. DH got BBQ, mom & I got pizza, MIL had a salad, and BIL had a burger. It was all OK, but none of it was great. That’s another thing I don’t like at DHS – the CS food options just aren’t great.

After lunch, we headed to the Animation Studio. I really wanted to do the Animation Academy – DH & I drew Goofy on our anniversary trip and really enjoyed it – and mom & MIL wanted to do the whole tour. This also needs updating – I’m tired of Mushu’s life story – and it’s just not as interesting with no real production going on. (The very first trip I took as an adult, they were still doing animation at the Florida studio, and I was able to watch the animators as they worked on Lilo & Stitch. I was so disappointed on the first trip DH & I took together when we realized that you could no longer actually see the animators at work.) We did enjoy seeing the production cells for The Princess & the Frog, though. We made it through and, surprise surprise, no one else wanted to wait for the Animation Academy, so we skipped it and headed to ToT to use our FPs. Mom sat this one out, too, but the rest of us enjoyed our trip into the Twilight Zone.

At this point, it was around 4:00, and since we knew we had a late night ahead of us, we decided to head back to SSR to rest. Several CMs warned us on our way out that we shouldn’t leave, as all parks (except AK) were at capacity, and it was likely we wouldn’t be able to get into any of the parks later that evening, but we knew we had to get some rest, so back to SSR we went.

Up next: Where do we go for dinner? (Hint: I’ve got hilarious photos & possibly video from this meal) Do we make it back to DHS to see the Osborne Lights? And most importantly, where do we end up for the big NYE celebration?

Yay! An update, and a good one at that!
Sorry about the rude people at TSM....
I'm glad that your dad didn't bite their heads off though!

BIL having fun:thumbsup2 good for him!

I'm with you on the CS choices at the Studios. I think splitting a Cobb Salad at Brown Derby is a great option, or a sandwich at Starring Rolls another great choice...

Ohhhh, I can't wait to see what happens after the naps!

Im just joinging in but have enjoyed the report so far. I too braved a family trip with ups and downs. Our lowest point was definetely ws so I feel you there! Looking forward to the rest!

Usually, when its just DH & I, we split a flatbread and a salad at Mama Melrose for lunch, but with a group of 6, we weren't going to be able to walk in without a reservation.

I'm going to try to get the next update up today, or maybe tomorrow...

:welcome: and thanks for joining in! More coming soon!

Great update! DHS is tricky for us, too. Really a half-day park (or 8/9-3, at most). I wish we would take time to see the Walt exhibit though. That's the one thing I just always seem to forget about. DBF always says he wishes TSMM was at the MK, and then he'd have no reason to go to DHS!! (I have other things I enjoy there, but I do get what he's saying)

DHS is definitely a half-day park! We have seen the Walt exhibit once, it was very well done. :thumbsup2 If TSM, RnRC, and ToT were in other parks, I'd never go to DHS at all, so I get where your DBF is coming from. :rotfl: I'm glad you're enjoying the report... I'm hoping to get another update up tonight or tomorrow, just waiting on DH to get some videos uploaded.

I'm late to the party but I am enjoying your trip report. I can't believe you made it to rope drop every morning. I have rope drop envy.

We travel with a good sized group on most trips. If we make it to rope drop once each trip we are lucky. Two things that I've learned reading the disboards all these years: Set expectations low and encourage others to venture out on their own. It doesn't always work. Especially if everyone knows you are the "disney expert". And we always have a day with major drama cause everyone is tired. How many more days do you have left?

Welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying the report. We were at the parks every morning before 8am... we've never done rope drop on previous trips, but it really paid off this time around. I just have departure day left to write about. We actually never had any major drama, just lots of minor drama! :rotfl:

I am really enjoying your trip report. Can't wait to hear if you made it back to DHS on New Year's Eve.

I'm so glad! :teeth: I think DH got all of the video uploaded to his YouTube channel tonight, which means he'll link it to his blog tomorrow... so I should be able to get the next update up tomorrow night. It's already written, just waiting for the video to be ready to go! :thumbsup2

Great! I'm really looking forward to reading about NYE...hope the dire predictions from the CMs about the parks closing were unfounded!

YAY---you did make it to DHS during NYE day. We were there too. We probably passed each other at some point during the day.

In all the times we've ridden Great Movie Ride, we've only had the cowboy scene once. I read on someone's trip report, that you can ask about watching that scene, and if they're running both scenes that day, they'll put you in a tram to see that scene. :thumbsup2

Can't wait to hear which NYE fireworks you see. (BTW, we stayed at DHS....:rolleyes1 )

You'll find out soon! ;)

We'll definitely request the cowboy scene next time... What did you think of the DHS fireworks?

Great update. I can't wait to read about your evening. :goodvibes

Coming right up!

Day 5, evening/night

We made it back to SSR around 5:00, and relaxed for about an hour. We had 7:45pm dinner ressies, and wanted to allow plenty of travel time. We met at the bus stop just after 6:00, and hopped on a bus to… MK! Dad opted not to go out with us again tonight… he was really tired and wanted to stay in and rest. Once we arrived at MK, we traveled by boat to… Wilderness Lodge! Our dinner ressies were at Whispering Canyon Café, and I was REALLY looking forward to this meal. I’d read a lot about it on the DIS, and I hadn’t shared all of the fun tidbits with anyone (although I’d told DH a little bit). This was our meal to pay for, and right before heading out, I noticed that TiW has a disclaimer that says you don’t get the discount on holidays… so I was a bit worried about that.

We made it to WL by 7:20pm, and made our way to the main building. I got us checked in for dinner, and we explored the lobby for a few minutes while we waited for dinner. Of course, we took some pictures while we were waiting.

Shortly, our buzzer went off, and we were escorted to a table in the main dining room. We’d barely gotten seated and ordered our drinks, and suddenly it was time for the pony races. Our server convinced DH & BIL to participate… hilarious video can be found here.

For dinner, I ordered the mixed greens salad and the hot seafood cakes (both appetizers), DH ordered the skillet, mom & MIL both ordered the meatloaf, and BIL ordered the pork loin, but substituted fries for the grits. After the food arrived, our server insisted that BIL needed ketchup for his fries, and this is what we ended up with:

DSCN0255.jpg

Oh, I forgot to mention… the table only had 4 place-settings of silverware when we sat down, so as soon as we ordered dinner, BIL had to ask for a fork & knife. This is important to know, because right after the food was served, BIL dropped his fork on the ground. When he asked for another (the 2nd time he’d asked for a fork), he was brought this:

Dinner was really good, and a lot of fun. When our check came out, DH asked the server if they took the TiW card, and she said yes… and gave us the discount even though it was a holiday! We did the hokey pokey as we waited to pay the bill, and then made our way out to the WL bus stop.

We decided to head back to DHS to see the Osborne Lights. I was a little worried that we’d have trouble getting in to the park, but we figured we could try it, and if the park was at capacity, we’d figure out something else to do. Lucky for us, when we got back to DHS at 10pm, it was not at capacity! So, we headed back to the Streets of America to see the Osborne Lights.

DH has posted video of it here.

Judging from my Twitter page, we seem to have spent ~30 minutes or so watching the lights, and then went to check the wait times at RnRC and ToT. Both were posted at 50+ minutes. BIL wanted to wait, but the rest of us didn’t really. We decided to try to stake out a place for watching the DHS fireworks show. The crowd was crazy, though, and we couldn’t find anywhere inside the park to sit down… so we went right outside the turnstiles and sat until around 11:30. Then we headed back in to DHS (still not at capacity!), and found some valuable real estate along Hollywood Blvd to wait for the fireworks.

Video can be found here.

The show was pretty short for a NYE fireworks show, and although it was large, it wasn’t that impressive.

DHS had evening EMH tonight, until 3am, but we were pretty exhausted, so we decided to head back to SSR. Now, waiting at the bus stop, we encountered our next set of rude guests. You know how, usually, people in ECVs or wheelchairs kind of sidestep the line and wait by where the bus will load them? Well, due to the crowds this evening, DHS had put up cones everywhere to prevent ECVs and wheelchairs from essentially cutting the long lines. So, mom did the responsible thing and maneuvered the ECV through the regular line… the first bus filled up right as we got to the front. Then we waited a LONG time for another bus – at least 30 minutes, but probably longer. When we’d been waiting about 25 minutes, another family with an ECV (actually, with two) showed up… and MOVED THE CONES so they could bypass the line!!! which at this point was really long. When the bus pulled up, we were all ready to fight to make sure mom got on this bus, but some other guests, who were in line behind us, made sure the bus driver knew we’d been there first, and had been waiting a long time, and that the other group had moved the cones to bypass the line. (DH also let the bus driver know that mom had been there first) I’m so thankful to that other guests spoke up for us, though – it made up for the rudeness of the family that was trying to cut the line. By the time the bus driver figured out which EVCs to load, and filled up the bus to capacity, it was after 1am! Thank goodness we didn’t have an early start planned the next day!

Up next: How do we spend our last day at Disney? Does everyone’s departure go smoothly? And why was our arrival at our home airport so annoying?

Wow! What great fireworks pictures! How crazy that those people in the TSM line told you to go ahead and then acted rude about all of you being together. :confused3 I don't understand people sometimes. And the people that moved the cones...obviously oblivious.

I am glad your mom made it on the bus! Thank you for the pics of the lights...they are beautiful!! Does it mean we are getting old when I here the parks are open til 3am and I am like 3am who stays up til 3am:rotfl2:

Thanks! Yeah, we ran into some .... interesting people at DHS that day!

Oh, our behavior would not have been very "Disney-like" if that bus driver hadn't loaded my mom onto the bus at that point! Thankfully, it didn't come to that.

I have several other pics of the Osborne lights... I may post more at the end of the TR, it's so hard to choose which pictures to post!

I must be getting old, too... I had a hard time staying up for the fireworks on NYE, and staying up til 11 every night to watch the Olympics right now is killing me! :rotfl:

YAY for the NYE update! :yay: You WERE at DHS----:thumbsup2

I loved the fireworks--thought the band playing as the fireworks went off was pretty cool. :cool1: I watched your video, but couldn't always hear the music. Could you hear it where you were? :confused3 We had grabbed a table at Min and Bill's Dockside Diner around 9 p.m. and didn't move until almost 1.

Crazy stuff about trying to leave the park with the bus situation. After experiencing Disney during this busy, crazy time, I am convinced that some people just get exhausted/stressed and behave in a rude way. We didn't experience any problems when we left the park. We wound up staying until about 2:30, then caught the boat back to Yacht Club.

Sounds like ya'll had a fun dinner at WCC earlier that night. Your MIL seems to be having fun in the pics.

BTW---love the shirts you and DH have on in your pic at the WL. Did you make those?
