Yeah, some of my friends have had unfortunate initials. No one really noticed too much except for very close friends who knew their middle names. Even then we had a quick giggle and moved on.

One was Ashley Sarah S. (Extended giggle on that one)

The other was Danielle Adrienne M.


I don't recall them ever getting teased about it, because really. How often do kids use a middle name? Even on school roll call it was just a first and last name deal.

Yeah we quickly decided if we needed to use our DD initals we needed to use all three and not just EZ

Good Luck because no matter what you name your child there will be issues. Think of the obvious ones as you are doing but then just go with it.

My daughter is Carolyn -- I never in a million years thought there would be any issue whatsoever with the name. It's a basic standard name, even phonetically sounds like it's spelled.

You would not believe how many times we have had to correct people with her name! For some bizarre reason EVERYONE wants to call her CaroLINE instead. It drives her nuts and it's constant. She has been dealing with it since she was little.

Who knew! Of course, one of her nicknames tends to be "Care Bear" (never would have guessed that either from Carolyn!). You would not believe how many people also tried to tell me that I couldn't call her Carolyn because it was too long of a name for a little one so they tried to give me all sorts of nicknames (to which I thought were totally different names. One being Carrie and I always thought of Carrie as a distinct name not a nickname for anything!) Then they tried Carol -- if I wanted Carol, I would have named her Carol, etc....

All from what I *thought* was a nice basic classic name. I should have just named her Heather Renee like we first had somewhat picked out or Noelle that I couldn't use becuase it made her name a tongue twister with our last name. At least I would have known about the potential problems beforehand.

Exactly. When I named my daughter, I wasnt thinking about her not getting a job because of her name, that 'just kind of silly. I have seen some unusual names of people who work. Plus, you can name your kid what you want, but when they get older, they can always want people to refer to them by a different name. I don't use my "birth" name on anything that isn't legal related. Matter of fact, most of my co workers don't know my "birth"name because I don't use it.

This is how my sister didn't become a Debbie. My mom was going to name her Debbie Ann and then realized the last initial of M. was a problem.

So she became Kathy Ann but then got married and became a KAB.

I have one son whose first name starts with K and our last name starts with K. You can be sure I absolutely made sure there was NO middle name with a K.

Unfortunately, I didn't think too well on how his initials sound together as it's KTK so saying it fast you get 'Katie' vs. K T

I will tell you though in schools now, at least around here, they have FULL names on their ID cards and everything else. It's everywhere, so anyone wanting to know your middle name pretty much will see it. It's in the directories, it's on your ID card, it's just everywhere. That only started a few years ago with some new paperwork (probably a new regulation or just our state, who knows). I remember being surprised they wanted full middle names & not initials, etc...

This is true, my DH is a III and for the longest time if anyone called and asked for him by his legal name we knew it wasn't someone who knew him. He literally goes by a name that isn't even a condensed version of his name. It was pulled out of the sky somewhere I think. His parents called him that pulled out of the sky name and other than it has caused some confusion (he has had paychecks in both his legal name and the name he uses).

It would be like his name is Goofy but he tells everyone his name is Sam. So everyone calls him Sam and unless they have a legal paper, have no clue his real name is Goofy.

Similar problem here. I have a CaroLINE. She gets CaroLYN all the time. It bothers me more than it bothers her. I can't stand it, and I correct people as politely as I can. Her father (my ex) calls her Cali as a nickname. I REALLY can't stand that. Sometimes I call her Carly, but not all the time. Her friends at school call her Care Bear! I thought she was the only one!

What about Anya or Anja? One of the sweetest young ladies I know (she's 14) is Anja. Her parents are both of Swedish descent and wanted a traditional name for her. She does have trouble with the "J" in her name because people who see it want to call her An-Ja. Her brother is Kjell (pronounced Shell). The boy HATES to wear a nametag because no one can pronounce it! Anyway, Anya Ruth would be very pretty, and traditional, and different but not weird.

I would be tempted to source your heritage for a crossover name that would sound American, but has its roots in your heritage.
