Honestly, I can't imagine anyone buying those dolls in the shape they are in even after the cleaning.

I would take them to the American Girl doll hospital to see what they could do with them before trying to sell them.

I agree I think they would be hard to sell...
If you do put them on ebay I would make sure to cover yourself you include close up pictures and of course fully disclose the remaining stains, etc. Even in the "after" photos their skin still has stains on it.

I took them from a large bin containing only American girl dolls, clothes, and accessories. there was nothing else in the bin besides stuffing. they were not in with food or anything else. There was no mold, only large spots of rust from the metal bunk beds that were in the bin with them. And of course, some rodent poo (I assume) spots, but anyone who has had mice in their attic knows that it can happen to the best of us. I will be suggesting that whoever buys them send them to AG to get a new torso and when they do, AG will clean their bodies again.

Thanks for enlightening me about people who sell secondhand items. Like I said, no more for me. I know most people would never even THINK about selling something like what you dug out of the trash (and really, it was there for a reason), but obviously there are some out there who would, and I wouldn't want to take the chance of buying from one of them.

I have to agree with the PP. It's not right to sell those to someone whose child will play with them. I don't care how much you clean them, it's still gross. It's one theng if you want to clean them up for your own kids to play with, but to sell them without letting the buyers know where you found them and exactly what they looked like is wrong.

There are some clothes that are not marked up at all, the duct taped doll, I will be sending to AG for replacement. The torso is not smelly or anything, up close you can tell that it's a lot of rust, just like the marks on their bodies that are left.

As far as getting them from the trash, my mother told me she saw them the day before in the yard sale they were having. She just looked at a couch they had and didn't buy anything.

I don't think that is what she meant at all. The doll is not filthy anymore, it has been cleaned according to AG guidelines for the body but I would not front them the torso, I would lower the price, figuring in they would have to pay to have that done.

Have none of you really never gone by something someone put out at the curb and took it home, cleaned it up, and used it ? I Freecycle stuff all the time and we even have a spot at our dump for things that you just don't want anymore for someone else to take. Every Sunday afternoon, when the yard sales are over, all that stuff is at that spot at the dump. The neighborhood I was in has curbside pick-up. No dump spot.

The sandbox at the park has more germs than these, the railings in public have worse germs than these as do the subways in many big cities. At least I know these were cleaned because I cleaned them myself.

No, not anything that looked like those dolls. Do not sell those dolls. You're setting yourself up if a child gets sick. God knows what's in the torsos of those things.
Would you buy something like this for your daughter? If so, then maybe keep it for her because honestly, no one is likely to buy them.

That's true. The thing is that no one takes the park or subway home or to bed with them. Washing your hands will take care of germs when exposed to those places. My DD was never into dolls, but she loved her stuffed animals/toys. She would take several of them to bed with her, hug them, kiss them, cover them with her blanket, etc. I imagine that girls that are into dolls do the same thing.

The ultimate decision is yours. If you disclose every detail of their condition and how you acquired these dolls, I expect that you won't find many takers. There may be someone that wants to display them that wouldn't have a problem with any of it.

Not many children sleep in a sandbox in a park or on a public railing. But children DO sleep with their AG dolls. They hug them and cuddle with them. You may have attempted to clean the outside vinyl, but you have no way to clean the inside. Anything growing inside those limbs is going to come back. You have no way of knowing the history on these dolls. Just because you wiped some dirt off, does not make these doll saleable.

You stated you cleaned them to AG standards (what standards are you talking about?). Did you replace the stuffing with new? Did you restring the limbs? Did you wash the cloth body? I am guessing no-

Never. I would not pick anything out of the trash and bring it into my house. We have curbside pickup so there is always stuff out there. My thinking is if someone threw it in the garbage there is a reason for it. I have yard sales and I make sure everything is clean and stain free. If things don't sell they go to Good Will or Salvation Army.

Which makes it even worse because you DON'T know for sure what was on/in them so you have no idea if you have thoroughly cleaned them or not.

I don't generally have a problem buying or using something secondhand (I'm definitely rethinking buying from strangers now though) but I would be disgusted and really pissed off to find out I bought something for my daughter that had been exposed to (insert the many possibilities here) that these dolls have.

Would you be willing to show the original pictures and say you suspect "rodent poo" in the auction?

ETA: No, I wouldn't take something out of someone's garbage. I've also never picked up something left at the curb, though I think many things are fine and left there because it's easier than taking it to Goodwill, having a garage sale, etc. I do, however, purchase some things secondhand and have been happy so far. Like others have said if you want to pull them out of the trash and clean them up for your children, go for it. Just don't sell them to some unsuspecting person. There's a difference.

OP - you do know that some of the dolls being sold today are still marked Pleasant Company on their necks right? It's in the molds they use and most have been changed but not every doll.

Gosh, that is so sad. I don't think I've ever seen four dolls together so totally trashed and I've seen hundreds, if not thousands, of AG dolls over the past twenty-two years since I bought my first one just before DD21 was born.

Molly has silver eye. They'll repair that for free and hopefully take pity on her and replace the entire head without cost if you ask and pay for the body.

All of the fabric bodies probably won't come clean and I'm guessing quite a few of the marks on the vinyl arms/legs are probably there to stay too though, you could try Oxy10 and sunlight on the worst marks to try to remove or fade them.

Those poor girls, they've obviously had a very rough life. It's great that you saved them from the landfill but they're not going to be your easy ebay sales either. Definitely list the clothing pieces individually for best results and good luck with it all....

I just checked DDs dolls (all bought from 1997 and later). Only Jess does not say pleasant company. Kaya says "Pleasant Company 2002" The rest all jsut say Pleasant Company with no dates, etc. They are two sets of twins (one set is DSs--she is not that spolied), one Bitty baby, Josefina
and Kailey.

BTW--I have picked up a number of things from the curb over the years--many things here--it is common practice and our things get picked up too. We have a desk in the playroom and DS has a small stereo which has a dent in it in his room. I do not see anything wrong with keeping items which are still in good shape out of landfills. However, I thin these dolls appear to be damaged beyond usable. Sorry OP.

well, I'm still sending in Felicity to be repaired and know a couple of people that would be willing to send the other dolls in for torso replacement for a cheap AG doll. Thanks for the concerns and different perspectives.

The reason those poor dolls didn't even sell at the owner's yard sale is because they are in such poor condition.

And no, OP, I have never, ever, taken anything from anyone's trash cans....would never even consider it.

I think those dolls are only usable for members in your own family. No way do I think they should be sold to try and make a buck.
