DD#1 is trying out for 8th grade volleyball tomorrow. Last year she got one of 14 spots with 18 girls trying out. This year 23 girls (5 more than last year) are trying out. Two are athletes from other sports (swimming, soccer) and two others were at the 4 day volleyball "camp" she went to in June for 2 hours a day. Only 2 girls from last year's team are not trying out. During the winter DD dances 2 1/2 hours a week but this is the only sport she does. I don't "make" her do sports she doesn't want to do (track) just for her to do a sport. She did try out for cheerleading with 35 other girls but did not make it. That is the only other thing she is interested in--but they try out the same time as volleyball this year, and she had to choose one.
DD felt she was at the bottom of the group skill-wise last year, and her coach never made her feel any different. Her weak area at the start of last year was serving. Unfortunately, her coach never once let her serve in a game. She would only start her in game #2, and then would rotate her out when it came time for her to serve. This pattern repeated for the entire season, until the tournament, when 3 of the girls (including DD) didn't get one minute of play in the two matches the team was in. She worked like a dog at home on serving too, but the coach would never give her a shot. I am not a parent to interfere with the coaching so I stayed out of it and never said anything to the coach, but I am thanking God that there is a different coach this year. DD says the 8th grade coach helped her with her setting and spiking last year and complimented her on it, so she feels good about that, but she is SO nervous due to the # of girls going out, and afraid that the 7th grade coach will say something bad about her.
So if you could throw some PD
at Kelly tonight or tomorrow, we'd sure appreciate it.
