Need some dog help

no beagles are not terriers but they have the same exact needs you posted that terriers need plus beagles require more stringent dog proofing.
To suggest the OP give his dog away because the family works full time (despite the fact the OP clearly states they have a relative walk the dog during the day) is insensitive and thoughtless

Well, we won't be giving the dog away :)

I'm going to use a combination of everyones suggestions. I appreciate the advice when choosing a daycare that was posted above. I also like the idea of sending him there 2-3 times a week.

I don't think the poster suggesting to find a new home was being rude, they were just emphasizing the importance of the issue.

Sorry, I didn't know you were speaking to that poster. Please quote them if you are doing that otherwise it makes sifting through posts confusing.
I don't read posts that are suggesting odd things, like giving the dog away. Or pay attention to it. That info is not useful.
:confused3

Sorry I wasn't aware there was a posting protocol that requires quotes. I wish there was one that required paragraphs in long threads :thumbsup2

Since only one poster mentioned giving the dog away I figured it was pretty obvious who I was referring to. I have no way of knowing who ignores what posts

Glad to hear you got some possitive ideas here you really love your pet , why else would you ask for help in making thier life better .. good luck and enjoy yur pup :goodvibes

All 3 of mine are crated from 8:00am to 5:00pm. One is also crated from 11:00pm to 5:00am. So what does she do during her non crate time? Follow me around until I sit down so that she can sleep in my lap.

Ok. I quoted myself. The dog I was talking about IS a terrier. And that's why she's crated. If I can't watch her, she's crated because she can't be trusted not to get into trouble.

If daycare is an option for the OP then great...but there are other options if that doesn't work out. And despite what another poster said, they're not inhumane options.

We have a miniature Schnauzer. She sleeps in her crate at night. At age two we gave her free range of the house when we were gone, but not before that. When we had to be gone all day (I don't work every day), we would take her for a nice long walk and then babygate her in the laundry room. Her crate was in there, so she had her bed, but she had a bit more space and could still see out into the main part of the house.

Even though she now has free reign, we often catch her still napping in her crate when we come home. I think it's great that you have someone come by at noon. I work close by so when our dog was younger I came home for her too. She doesn't seem to need me to anymore though.

We have a miniature Schnauzer as well - she is 8 years old. She was exactly as you describe when she was a puppy - papers strewn everywhere, etc.

We are gone from 7:30am - 6pm Mon-Fri and she is fine. And trust me she is very spoiled. She was crate trained as a puppy but haven't used it since then. I wonder if your puppy will grow out of it?

Good luck!!! I just love Schnauzers!
Jenny :)

Scott,

I just want to say "good for you" for trying to solve the problem rather than blame it on the dog. You are a good dog parent...just the type I look for as a breeder. Several buyers from our last litter are using daycare at least part of the week and it is wonderful for the dogs - they love it! I greatly prefer it to having people leave the dogs for very long times in crates...not judging those who have posted that they do this. What works for one may not work for another. All people and their dogs are different.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for taken the suggestion in the way it was intended. That's why I also suggested Doggie Daycare in the same post. I was really just trying to say that sometimes it just doesn't work out with a new puppy and there's nothing wrong with looking for other alternatives.

To those that were so judgemental...give me a break! It's not like I suggested euthanization or something.

FWIW -- Our 7-yr. old schnauzer (which we love dearly!) came from a home that didn't have time for her and no longer wanted her around. I can't tell you how thankful I am for the day she came into our lives.

I would suggest doggie daycare as well. It seems to be a growing business. Im around dogs all the time, and they are smarter then we give them credit for. I have 2 dogs and a foster dog which is a beagle. She has learned to jump the baby gates, so when we leave I crate her. I do not work so shes not in there long. But, she is not totally housetrained yet either.
I do in home petsitting, and have done doggie daycare for some neighbors when they work long hours. If you lived closer, Id take care of your dog for you while you worked.
In all seriousness, I think you and your dog will be happy with doggie daycare.

For those who missed it, they already have someone who comes in the middle of the day to socialize with the dog. Isn't that already sort of like doggie daycare?

The one thing I learned with our lab (we have a purebred and a lab/border collie mix) is that human interaction and socialization isn't enough...especially with puppies. Some breeds don't grow out of their "puppy days" until they are 2-3 years old. Until then, they need lots of running around to wear them out, and sometimes a walk by a sitter once a day just doesn't cut it.

My dogs are on 2 sides of the spectrum. The lab is our youngest, and really didn't start behaving until almost 3 1/2. Up to that point, doggie daycare was a must just to wear him out so he would calm down. For our mix, she hated daycare, and was more content just staying home. She didn't care if she got a walk during the day, but just wanted to be petted and loved and given lots of treats when we got home. :teeth:

Just remember, every dog is different...not just the breed. While our lab is the most loving dog to our family...to people he doesn't know he's a bit skittish...a trait that isn't common in labs. I actually had a Schnauzer growing up, and while she was a bit hyper, she wasn't as hyper as you describe. But again, she may just be out of the norm of the breed like my lab is.

Other things you might try while leaving your pet at home for a stretch during the day is leaving treat filled toys in various places, where he will find them at different intervals during the day. Rawhides are not recommded b/c they can chew them to a point that they can swallow them and they won't be able to digest them. Its' hard to be a puppy, and hard to be a puppy owner. Where I live, in Louisiana, the weather is good enough that you could put in a doggie door and a safe fence and allow your dog to go in and out of a small yard safely.
Good luck, I hope you find the right niche for you and your pup!
