My husband and myself are new to the DVC membership and have only stayed once since buying.

We had 108 points left from 2007, 270 from 2008.

So we decided to do a 4 day Disney and 3 day cruise in May 09 which equaled 489 points of course we had to borrow from 2009.. .. because of unforeseen circumstances we have to cancel and we can't use them.

The total points is 489 which breaks down 112 for BCV and 367 cruise.. I am told by MS that all 489 have to be used by end of May 09 or they will be lost.

Can I sell the 489 and how do you do that when 367 have to be used for exchange?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have an unfortunate situation. Once you trade out points to reserve a non-DVC resort, they stay out, meaning you cannot use those 367 points you used for the cruise to reserve a DVC resort if you cancel the non-DVC reservation. They instead have to be used for a Disney destination other than a DVC resort. You could attempt to rent them for a Disney hotel or cruise trip on the rent trade board here. The other 112 points can be used to rent a DVC resort reservation.

I'm not sure of all the ins and outs of reservation points but you might be able to use them to book an Interval International exchange that is further out......I would call MS and see if you have that option.

May, 2009 must be your use year??

The 489 points are now "reservation points". They can be used at any non-DVC resort for a booking fee of $95.00.

And, yes, they will be lost if they are not used by then.

Also, you cannot transfer them to a DVC member either, but you can make a reservation for someone at a non-DVC resort, or a cruise.

You do have a very unfortunate situation with so many points involved.

In any event, you should call MS and they will explain to you in detail and clealy how you can use them and not lose them.

I was told that borrowing was a final transaction. Four years ago when we bought our house, we decided to skip going to WDW that year. I rented out the Easter week ressie, received the check, cashed it, then called MS to change the name. It was not allowed. I had to refund the $2200 and we went ourselves. Our two upcoming trips are on borrowed points, since I am always in borrow mode, and I was under the impression that if I canceled (due to health issues) I would just be out the 400+ points. I actually never checked to see if that was true since DH insisted upon going.

If I understand your situation correctly, you must have a June UY (there is no May UY), and you would have used 108 banked points from 2007, 270 points from 2008, and 111 points borrowed from 2009.

Banked points are used first, so depending on which you booked first, the 108 points should have been applied to that ressie. From your description, it seems like you booked the cruise first and your BCV ressie was one 2008 point and 111 borrowed points. IF that's the case, the info MS gave you would be almost correct and you'd be in a "use or lose" position for all of those points. (You'd actually have one bankable point, because that one BCV point is not a "reservation point.")

Here's a suggestion -- call MS back, and ask to speak to a supervisor if necessary. Ask them to juggle the point application so that the BCV ressie all came from your 2008 allocation. They can shift those points manually. If they do, you will have 112 points back in your regular account, and they will be fully bankable until the end of January. That's 112 points that can be taken out of risk and banked to next year.

Then, if necessary, you can rent the remaining 377 points for ressies concluding by 5/30/09. As pointed out above, those points can only be used for non-DVC ressies because they are "reservation points." But at least you will have a smaller problem, and you'll have your full allocation of points for 2009.

Interesting...and why did they not allow it? Changing the names on a ressie certainly IS allowed. :confused3

Because they told me "Borrowing is a final transaction." It really sucked because I had to contact the person who rented the ressie and tell them they didn't have a room for Easter week.

That makes sense to me and I will try it.. thanks for suggesting it.
