Does it have to be a progressive lens? You could save some money by going with a no-line bifocal or even a regular bifocal if these are just your backup pair of glasses.

You could also eliminate some of the extras like AR coating, transitional lens, polished edges and go with a cheaper lens material instead of the more expensive (but lighter) polycarbonate or high index lenses. And of course, the frame alone can cost well over $150 if you purchase a quality frame.

I would avoid going with an online order for progressives. They can be a tough fit and you need to be measured for the frame that you choose. Some frames just are not suitable for progressives (lens is too narrow). It's not unusual to send progressives back to have them re-done for a patient because they just aren't working out. This can be true even for patients who have been wearing progressives for a while.

Just about any of the box stores with optical places can do the job but don't expect them to be as cheap as the "two pair for $99" glasses. Progressives don't come cheaply.

The only "extra" I have is the anti glare finish which I would do again. They are no line bifocals....they called them progressive. We don't have costco anywhere near. The frames don't have to be "designer" but they will be current

Ask the independent optician if he or she can give you a break on a second pair. Do you have any vision insurance? Mine pays most of the cost of the glasses and there can be percentages off a second pair or off sunglasses, depending on the plan. Honestly, progressive lenses are not something to try to skimp on. Antiglare coating and lightweight lenses are important to me. Perhaps you could use less expensive frames. I've never purchased two pairs of glasses at the same time, but I do keep my last pair of glasses in case something happens to the newest pair.

TRy sam's club if your a member. otherwise I've been happy with Peral Vision and lenscrafters. Also Americas best is good and resonable I have heard. I personally have not had good luck with walmart, sears, or jcpenny glasses/frames.
