I have read some bad reviews and hoped I could get some opinions. Please be honest and tell me what you ate if you can remember! TIA!

BF and I LOVE Akershus! While there are quite a few herring-based items, they have lots of "normal" foods too. Meats and cheeses, breads, salads, peel and eat shrimp. BF is not a big fan of fish, but I think this is one of his favorite restaurants in EPCOT. It is also one of the best values in WDW, at least at lunch. The only thing is desserts are separate.

My sister and I tried Akershus last year and really enjoyed it. We had fun trying lots of new foods, in addition to more familiar ones. The food was delicious, and we had great service. I see that you have small children. I'm not real sure that this would be a place with food they would enjoy, but I'll let others weigh in on that part.

Akershus has a child's menu. You might want to check out the menus at wdwig.com to see if they appeal.

We've been to Akershus several times but haven't been since they changed from a smorgasbordt to a koldbordt and hot dish ordering. My personal favorites were the cold meat salad (surprisingly good), boiled shrimp, breads, meatballs and new potatoes. DH loved the smoked salmon, shrimp and just about everything else I think. I also loved the Ringnes beer but of course they've replaced that with a yucky Danish beer for some reason.

I would give it a try. The setting is nice and comfortable and the Norwegian servers are really nice. Plus I hear that the desserts (not included) are really good too. We've always been too stuffed to try one. :D

I am not too worried about the kids. My DD and DS will eat anything. DS is too young for shellfish but he eats other types of fish and DD loves shrimp! They are pretty daring kids. I am lucky! DD will even eat spinach!

For years this restarant has been a running joke in our house. We had eaten there one time and DH liked it but the rest of us did not!

DH asks every year if we want to go back to Akershaus and the children start screaming and crying.

Well, we are all literally eating our words.

They have apparently revamped their menu and their format for how they handle the "all you care to eat" thing and all I can say now is, really people you should try it. On top of everything else, their prices are remarkable.

In fact we ate there for lunch and then dinner two days later(on the 4th of July)!
The kids enjoyed their meals and had a wonderful time with dessert.- a large (delicious) sugar cookie shaped like a troll with beautiful edible "paints" in chocolate "pots" on the plate. The girls wanted to stay all afternoon and the rest of us were anxious to get back to touring the world showcase.

We enjoyed our meal so much in fact that we asked to see the chef and a lovely woman named Mary came out and gave me a great tableside tutorial on pan searing salmon.

WOO HOO! DD LOVES salmon! I think you just made up our minds. Salmon and painting cookies?! She will love it!

why don't people like it? I thought it was great -- very pleasant atmosphere , freshly prepared food, interesting without being weird....what's the problem?

We love it! The cookie painting gives Mom & Dad enough time to linger over their meals! We had the Viking meal and the crispy chicken. Then DH decided he wanted to try the Venison, and they brought that out also.

I loved the shrimp salad on the cold buffet. Such a nice break from the hamburgs and chicken fingers you eat all week.

Both kids wanted PB&J, which came with a side of grapes. When our waitress saw the kids devouring the grapes, she brought out a bowl!

And I thought the restaurant itself was beautiful. I told DS we were going to eat in Helm's Deep (he's a Lord of the Rings fan) and that's what it felt like.

We love Norway's restaurant. And the cold buffet has lots of breads and cold meats (think cold cuts) that my kids loved. They made little sandwiches out of the turkey and flatbreads. And everyone loved a bright pink seafood salad they had.

Check the menus on allears.net. The hot foods are slightly different between lunch and dinner. The lunch offerings are a little less exotic. We usually get lunch (it's cheaper) but late. I think they serve lunch until 4:30?? It's late enough to skip dinner and just do snacks and dessert later in the evening.

It's a great value, slightly different food, and with some healthful options. It's one of the few restaurants where I ate all I could but didn't feel like I had to crawl out of the restaurant.

Now if they would just bring back the Ringnes :(

Thanks so much everyone!
Harambe how was the crispy chicken?

If you are more-or-less adventurous eater, then by all means eat at Akershus. The quality and service are excellent (DW especially loves the Venison Stew). My mom's family is Scandinavian (well actually from Estonia, but very similar cuisine and culture), so a lot of what was offered (quite a few different types of smoked and pickled fish) was familiar and beloved. Also the mashed rutabagas are wonderful, and we've never been able to replicate them at home despite having the recipe.

If, however, you are a picky eater or are averse to new or unusual flavors and textures, then by all means make a PS elsewhere, as you will not be happy. No Burgz 'n Dogz, no french fries (they do have potato salad tho), nothing that would remind you of Chilis or TGIFridays or any other American mass market restaurant.

My DH and DS and I had aa absolutely wonderful meal there on New Years Eve - the trout was marvelous, my 11 year old ate 3 plates of meatballs, my DH fell in love with the carmelized goat cheese before he realized what it was :earseek: (he still liked it, he was just REALLY surprised) - we pretty much tried every single thing on the menu, apart from desserts, and there was not one thing, hot or on the cold buffet, that we didn't really love. The service was wonderful, the setting is lovely - truly, I can't imagine NOT liking this place, unless you really only eat things like plain potatoes and hamburgers.

We can hardly wait to go again!

We've eaten there twice, but it was back when the whole thing was a buffet. We loved it then! Don't know if I would care for it as much now, with the new set-up. Their desserts were also delicious! Setting is lovely, and the servers are wonderful! And keep in mind~I don't eat fish!! I still found plenty of items to my liking.

We have eaten at the Akerhus several times, in fact we ate here on our first trip to WDW in 1991. We have always enjoyed our meals there. We decided to try it again on this trip. Although they have revamped the serving of the hot food, the food here is still delicious and well prepared. My husband is picky, in fact he really doesn't like food at all, but he likes this restaurant. He made several open faced sandwiches with the various breads, cheeses and cold meats from the cold food selections-- just like we had when we visited Denmark many years ago. There were also many salads, including the meat salad -- it is really good! After we had sampled the cold food, we had our choice of several hot meals. Our server said we could order as many as we wanted and we could order all afternoon if we wanted. There were four of us and we all ordered a different item so we could share. I ordered the seared salmon and it was wonderful. It had a sweet and sour sauce over it. DD ordered the Hearty Viking Favorites (meatballs & mashed rutabagas). This also included potatoes and other vegetables but she was full from the Koldtbordet and didn't want the other items. DS had Pasta Akershus and DH had Kjottkaker (ground beef and pork with gerkins, beets and onion). DS didn't care for his hot food selection. It was a little adventurous for him and he should have ordered the meatballs. I tasted the pasta and it reminded me of beef burgundy. I thought it was delicious. My DH loved his food. I didn't try it, but DD said it tasted somewhat sausage-like. Although we could have ordered more, we were very full and declined additional hot food items. The desserts are extra, but they are small and only cost $1.99 each. We sampled a couple of them and they were also good. All in all, this was an excellent bargain -- probably the best bargain in WDW. Although DS didn't like some of his meal, he found many things he did like to satisfy his appetite. Lunch was $13.99 for adults not including drinks or dessert. The service was excellent and the setting is so inviting. Give it a try -- I think you will like it!

So good to see all these folks who enjoyed their meal here!

SamanthaL - the crispy chicken was very good. Not exotic at all, but flavorful. Now make sure you try the mashed rutabaga. It was the best! And I don't even know what a rutabaga is!

It's my favorite restaurant in all WDW. Maybe it's the mashed rutabaga.... :teeth:

We always have a meal in Norway! There is soooo much to try, even for youngsters, that we really enjoy our meals there. DH is a fish lover, but I am not, and we always find something to fill us up! My DD, age 12, loves the meatball adult dinner that they serve. Give it a try with an open mind and palate, and I'd be willing to bet you'll be pleased. Please report back after your trip
