Need Opinions From Those Who "Get It"...

I would postpone. My daughter came off ankle surgery and it took a while before her stamina was up for walking longer distances. You could go the scooter route, but do you really want to ride a scooter in the middle of Easter crowds? Since you aren't really going for your birthday anyway, what is delaying it a few months? It will be just as crowded, or depending when you go, better crowd wise. The best of all, you will be able to fully enjoy it!

You could totally change the nature of your trip. Go into slow down mode by scheduling more time at the resort. Trust me, kids love swimming as much as the parks. Maybe schedule some other activities like seeing YeeHa Bob at the Riverside Resort, Tea at the Grand Floridian, or seeing La Noube at DTD. If you go to the parks, you can do that in slow down mode also instead of rushing to ride attractions, plan on seeing more shows and eating more. Just an idea. Of course, a lot of activities may be unavailable considering the time of the year you are going.

I would reschedule for the week after school lets out. Gives you more time to heal, smaller crowds, and with a full Summer break on hand, you could even extend the trip to 10 or more days instead of 7.

Unless your doctor and PA have been to Disney, they are probably underestimating the amount of walking involved.

I would postpone.

I would wait. Like everyone said, you are paying a premium and rushing your healing is going to be stressful and impact your trip. I would breath, push it back to when you can, and relax and focus on how good it will feel to be healthy and strolling around Magic Kingdom!!!

I'm agreeing with all the "waiters". Postpone if possible, such a great trip and that kind of injury has real potential to be a deal breaker if youre not properly healed and/or wiling to use a scooter and take it easy if need be. I dont think "take it easy" usually fits in with my touring style. So sorry you have had such rotten luck lately. Fingers crossed for better days!

The scooter would be a big help, but the time of year would probably not be ideal for such an undertaking. But, if you were already mentally prepared for dealing with such large crowds, you may not care about it. I agree with the poster who said to just take things slower and do other non-park related activities.

If you reschedule to late August, the crowds will be about equal to Easter. Schools in the south will be back in and PA still off. By then, you will be used to the extra heat of the summer.

So sorry for your streak of calamities. Hopefully this is the end of them. Kudos to your daughter for being so conscientious about her grades. Good girl ! As for your trip , I broke my ankle once and found out the hard way that no one can make the choice but you ( and your ankle) . The doctors will advise you and then it is up to you. There are many things to consider. I guess you need to figure out if you could enjoy your trip as much as you would if you waited or is the disappointment of postponing too much to deal with ? Whatever you decide I wish you only sunshine and rainbows. Be safe , be comfortable , and have a magical time when you finally arrive.

A couple of years ago my mother needed shoulder surgery from an injury. The surgery wasn't all that long before our trip, but long enough to get her out of the sling. I don't remember the exact time line. We went, but the trip was exactly when we wanted it, the hotel we wanted, and she and I both had approved vacation from our respective employers that would have been very difficult to move. That being said, we went a little slower, and I carried all bags, but we had a great time. It just depends on your mind set. Sit alone and really think about how you would feel if you knew for a fact you were going, regardless of all the other issues, and how you would feel if you moved it back. If you feel worse about moving it back, despite your ankle and knowing you might not be able to move as fast as you would like, then go. If you feel a sense of relief by the fact you have more time, then move it. That's what we did. Just my 2 cents.

Since the trip isn't on your actual birthday, I would postpone. While it is a different situation, I had a stomach flu when we left for Disney. While I recovered fairly quickly on the trip, I didn't feel good. It just wasn't that much fun. I wish we could have postponed.

Another thing to know for after you get your cast off - your skin underneath is going to be gross and probably super-sensitive for a few weeks. After I had my cast removed I couldn't stand to have anything touch my skin from my fingertips to my elbow, and it was not a pretty sight. :crazy2: If it had been my foot/ankle there was no way I could have worn socks or even a shoe as simple as a flip flop all day. I couldn't even wear a sleeve longer than my elbow, and I couldn't touch my own hair because the sensation was just too much.

You have a long trip planned and you will not enjoy it. If you think about how worn out you get when your healthy then you can imagine how sore and tired you will be by day 5 with a healing ankle. I would wait until you can really enjoy the parks. Happy Birthday!

I would do your PT and listen to doctors - that's what they're there for! You can even advise your physical therapist of what your plans are so they can tailor treatment and exercises with your Dis goal in mind, or give you realistic input on whether you can do it or not. And be honest - you're not just walking the 10+ miles a day, but you're CONSTANTLY on your feet, standing in line on not the best surfaces in the whole wide world (I'm looking at you, ALL of Animal Kingdom and Splash Mountain).

That said - ankles are right there with knees (in my opinion) as the most important parts of your body. Don't risk a lifetime of pain and further injury if there's an opportunity for you to postpone the trip until you're 110%!
I second this, listen to your doctor and talk to you PT about your plans, they are the experts. rent a scooter to stay off your feet if you cant push back your trip. Take care of your self.

That really stinks! If it were a different body part, I might advise you to "suck it up" and go anyway. But you rely on fully functioning legs and feet at WDW. I think you should wait. Maybe your daughter won't mind missing some time in September, when school isn't in full swing yet.

We started going to Disney for Christmas in 2009. We loved it so much that we planned on going again in 2010. I was in college and would be on break, my sister was and still is a teacher, giving her the time off, my mom had a ton of vaca days left and my dad is retired.

We were excited - we knew what to expect, we now knew where all the great decorations were, etc. We had something to really look forward to. Fast forward to December 10th, 2010 (yes, I remember the day.) It was the weekend before classes ended and finals started up. I was invited by a friend to her lacrosse formal. We had a blast and went to the bar after. We were all on the dance floor joking around and I felt my ankle come out from under me. I didn't fall - I simply felt a jolt and I couldn't put weight on it.

I looked up at my buddy (in which he describes perfectly to this day as "wide-eyed and jaw dropped.") I said "I think I just turned my ankle... really bad. He helped me limp over to a table and sat me down.. I shoo'd him off. I was in pain and there was no way he could help. I kept thinking.. "man, this thing is gonna swell. I need to get through finals and get to Disney." I limped home (which, in hindsight was a terrible, terribly move) and put it on ice. I woke up the next morning and there was a bruise the size of a baseball on my ankle. My foot was twice its size.

I was dropped off at my friend''s house (who was a nursing major.) She recommended I go to the hospital. The pieces were adding up. It turns out I had a Jones fracture (5th metatarsal) and a sprained ankle. When I called my mom, she freaked. She wanted to cancel the trip.

I was eventually put into a boot. I felt better and could start to put some weight on it (while wearing the boot) but it would be a long 15-week process to fully heal and the doctor didn't want me putting much weight on it the first month or two.

We talked my mom out of canceling the trip. Our travel agent set us up with a rental from Buena Vista Scooter Rental. They delivered the scooter to us and I used it all trip. It did stink using the scooter. I missed out on walking around, it was annoying to transfer at rides and I couldn't browse stores like I normally would. Not to mention - people would give me the stink eye when they saw a 21-year old kid coming to the bus line. They probably thought I was faking it.

All in all, it didn't ruin my trip by any means. In fact, I enjoyed the trip until I got sick (both a cold and then a stomach virus that knocked me out most of NYE day) But, this is your trip. I rolled with the punches because I wanted to go and didn't want to ruin the holiday for my family. If you're not 100%, then cancel the trip. It's for your birthday. Take the time to plan out an awesome trip when you're fully healthy. Maybe go in the early summer and celebrate your daughter's good grades! You'll appreciate the trip so much more.

Hate to say it but I would postpone. Even if your ankle was back in shape for regular activities by Easter it probably would not be in 10 mile a day walking shape by then. I have had broken ankles twice, and I can tell you that even after therapy the ligaments stay sore for a long time after the bones have healed. And peak time may not be the best time to try to get used to a scooter.
So wait until the prices go back down and the pool at your "dream resort" is available and go then. You were already "sucking it up" to go at Easter. So wait a while longer until you can fully enjoy it.

Wait and go in the offseason. Save your foot and your wallet. Just call it a post birthday bash!
