My appliances are about 18 years old...kept in good condition. I am planning on redoing the kitchen in the fall. The dish washer is not cleaning the dishes! Leaving a film! I was looking at GE Profile in either black or stainless steel? I am leaning towards the black because it will probably wear better. How is it having stainless? Does it scratch easily? Do you see the scratches? Can you recommend a dishwasher that you might have? Thanks

I have a BLACK Bosch dishwasher. I love it. It's so quiet I don't even know it's running sometimes.

Boschs' are usually pretty expensive, but I found this one at a Sears cash and carry place for $300 off list. It was $300 less because it was returned due to a small scratch on the side. Once we paid for and installed the dishwasher, the scratch is not noticeable.

We paid around $500 for it and it was worth every penny.

Funny you bring this up. I am currently looking to rent a house this summer in (where else) Orlando. I have looked at over 1000 homes. I am very picky. If the appliances are black, it's a no go. I don't want to darken my mood on vacation I guess. Many people love black and that's great, but I'm not one of them.

What are your other appliances and which finish do you like best?

What are your cabinets?

Can I ask, and I'm not being sarcastic or anything, but...why not white? When we remodeled our home a couple of years ago we were going through the same debate--black or stainless steel? So many pros and cons for both, mostly cons--black would be too dark, both would show fingerprints (I already knew that because we had a black dishwasher & microwave before the remodel). Finally I was talking to an interior designer and she asked me, "Why not white?" and I said, "I don't know, I didn't even think about it as an option." Well, we went with white appliances, beige tile countertops, light hardwood floors and a maple cabinet and it looks awesome. I love it because it doesn't look like, "Ohhhh, a remodel done in early 2000's", you know...it's not dated and I felt the black or stainless would have dated the look.

I know, another option for you to think about but I just wanted to throw it out there for you to consider.

Most people don't consider white because white is considered "so 90's" in alot of parts of the country. Around here you can not sell with out Stainless in some areas black is acceptable but in general I think white is not in fashion so many won't consider it. I personally don't like white but do like bisque but bisque is out.

That's true here in Seattle, too---stainless steel is everywhere. But if you're not planning on selling anytime soon, why not go with what you like? I mean, I get what you're saying and see it time and again on the home remodel shows, I just think why settle for something that you don't like just because it's the trend?

I have white and I hate the dirt they show. I have a black and white kitchen now. I am re-modeling in the fall otherwise wouldn't be going to Disney now. I need all new. Need dishwasher now. I am looking to do a cherry cabinent. Thanks

I didn't settle for something I don't like since I love stainless and I do plan to sell in the next few years so resale is important to me. BTW your kitchen looked nice and bright and lovely.

We have black appliances and cherry cabinets. They do look very nice together. Stainless would look just as nice, though. Black does not darken the room IMO.

A couple of things:
I second the Bosch dishwasher! I LOVE mine - never take a dirty dish out of the thing - I never rinse anything, I put in casserole dishes with baked on gunk, never even any residue.........fantastic piece of equipment.

We bought the black appliances because we needed all new (bought a 30 YO house with what appeared to be original appliances), and at the time (5 years ago or so) stainless would have been another $1500. Couldn't justify it at the time. The big complaint I have with black is that there is white primer not far beneath the black paint, so if you are rough on the exterior of appliances, black may not be the best choice. I do wipe them down fairly frequently, but they are pretty good about not showing handprints, etc. I think stainless would show pretty much everything - I know my small stainless appliances do. Also, I believe that stainless would dent a little easier and show the dents more.

Anyhow, either black or stainless will look nice, I'm sure. Get the one you like better.

I like stainless better and have had no problems with scratches. All of our appliances are GE Profile with the exception of the refrigerator which is a Kenmore. I will say that a bottle fell out of the refrigerator the first week we had it and landed on the top of the freezer door (we've got a french door with the freezer on the bottom), and it left a nice little dent on the top of the freezer door. Bugs me to death - but not a lot I can do about it. I'm not sure what kind of mark would have been left if we didn't have stainless.

Get what you like. I've had harvest gold, white, almond, and stainless steel.

Whatever you get will probably be dated at some point.

I've probably had more white than anything, but that's because of apartments or places that I bought with the refrigerator included.

I'm getting ready to get a new refrigerator and will be getting black because I think that will look best with my other stuff.

I have stainless (about 2 years old) in my New Orleans home. It certainly looks nice, but I predict stainless will soon be dated as it's been so "in" for awhile.

I have black and I love them. I don't think it darkens (sp?) the room but then again my kitchen is open with the rest of the house. I have cherry cabinets also.

I have brushed stainless appliances and I love them. They don't show fingerprints and are not prone to scratches. The fridge has a black side, which shows, and the dishwasher and stove have black panels where the controls are.

I have cherry hardwood floors, cream cabinets, black iron knobs/drawer pulls, black iron light fixtures, brushed stainless fixtures and dark granite. It all goes together nicely.

Weird...you may have my kitchen!!!! The only diff is the cabinets, mine are cherry.

We had all black appliances then we moved to our new house, brought the black frig with me, but it died last month! So, since the other appliances were the black and brushed stainless, that's what the new frig is. I love it!

Oh how funny! I bet the cherry cabinets look great! Mine were pickled pine and I repainted them when we remodeled our kitchen. I like them, but I'd love cherry!
