Hi All,

I am trying (again) to plan a trip for Oct for myself and DH. He has mobility issues and we are trying to figure out the best way to get around.

We will likely be staying at SSR, since it worked out well for us last time being able to drive up and park next to the entrance of the building. I am trying to decide between bringing his transport chair and renting an ECV at the parks, or renting an ECV for length of stay.

He can walk for short distances. For example, last year he did okay walking around DTD if I dropped him off at the curb, we sat awhile, etc. However, to go to the parks he will definitely need the ECV.

One issue w/renting the ECV for the entire trip is he is concerned about my being able to assemble/disassemble and lift the pieces in and out of the car. Truth be told, that kind of worries me too (I have done research about the logistics of this and I'm still not sure if I could handle it).

So I thought, if we bring his transport chair, could I use it to get him into the parks from the lot to the rental counter, and then rent the ECV and leave our chair with them for the day? Or will they not hold it for us?

any thoughts or assistance with this would be greatly appreciated!

If you rent from off-site you are guaranteed availability all the time, as well as a lower price.

If you rent from Disney they will tag and hold a wheelchair at the rental location. However, depending on the time of year and time of day you may not have availability at a Park for rental.

Most standard (rental) ECVs have their heaviest part, which is the rear wheel and motor assembly, weigh about 40 pounds. Likewise, the main part of the ECV (front wheel, tiller, base, and seat mount tube) will also weigh about 40 pounds. My problems are mobility related and when I use my ECV, which is basically a standard-size ECV, on a trip with a rental car I can get it in and out of the car without much difficulty. The parts are designed to get a good, two-handed, grip on them.

Is there a reason that you would have to use your car if you rent an ECV from an offsite company?

You might want to consider staying at a Monorail resort so that you can just use the monorail and the buses and not worry about the car. The buses aren't ideal but for the most part they are easy to use and overall the drivers are friendly and helpful.

Depending on what kind of a car you have you might also be able to put the scooter in the back seat (bring a sheet or tarp to cover the seat with). That way you are only lifting the heavy parts onto the floor or the seat and not the height of getting them into and out of the trunk. Much easier.
