Leaving in a couple weeks. Looking to stretch the budget.

  • On the DDP, we'll use some Snack Credit for Breakfast some times.
  • Bring items for Breakfast in the room.
  • Bring water bottles.
  • Sharing some CS meals.
  • Purchasing Popcorn Bucket on 1st day. Refill w/ Microwave popcorn.
  • Bring some snacks to the park.
Any other ideas? Not just for food. Thanks.

If you are on the DDP, you will not be hungry. It takes quite an effort to successfully use all your credits without cashing in at the sundry shop on the morning of your departure date. For our family, 2 CS credits gets us easily enough food for 2 parents and 2 kids under 6. We always end up with extra CS credits.

We stopped buying the DDP because we had to gorge ourselves just to break even on the cost. The DxDDP is a better deal financially if you are planning on eating at a lot of Table Service restaurants any way.

What ages are your kids?

You probably won't really need to stretch too much with the dining plan. What we did when we got it last is eat breakfast in room.

Bring an electric kettle and you can make oatmeal for mornings and also have fruit and other easy foods. Even cold cereal and milk, whatever you like. Bring a toaster and have even more options.

Then we would usually have some mid morning snack like ice cream or small snack whatever.

Then lunch at counter service (you get a dessert and everything, this was always too much for us all to eat and we picked desserts you can save for later often)

Then a sit down dinner, which also gives you way too much food and we couldn't think of eating the rest of the day.

If you are hot and thirsty, you can get ice water at the counter service restaurants for free. I personally hate the the taste of the water, but the rest of my family doesn't mind it, and those crystal light to go packets are quite nice for that purpose!

I agree with ValpoCory. We always get the DDP because I don't like to worry about how much we're spending (I've done a cost comparison and DDP is cheaper than OOP for us) but by the time it's all said and done, we are all SICK of eating, lol. We always have at LEAST 16 credits left over for the week, for the 4 of us. The only thing we get is water for our room.

With the dining plan, I suspect your biggest budget drain will be trinkets and stuff - not food.

Double check your packing list. Sunscreen, extra socks, band aids, feminine products, batteries, cell phone chargers, hats - all that stuff is more expensive once you are on property than packing it.

A lot of attractions dump into shops. If you have kids who like to spend and an issue saying no (or if you can't say no to yourself), have the next attraction in mind when you board that one. That will distract you from Tigger key chains and Minnie magnets and "but this pen is only $2."

Don't souvienier shop until late. If you like something make a note of what it is and where you found it. If you can't get back to that spot, you can call Disney and have it shipped if it was really that important (it probably won't be).

If your kids are used to trinkets - get some before you leave. The dollar store is usually good for glowsticks, Disney themed coloring books.

Make sure you doing ample planning and leave ample time for travel. On the dining plan, if you miss a reservation, you can easily waste a credit - and find yourself paying out of pocket for counter service if its a busy time and you are hungry NOW. Leaving ample time for travel will keep you from needing to jump into a cab so you don't miss your only chance for Fantasmic (we've done that).

Definitely take advantage of the free ice water at the counterservice stands. 80% of the time you think you're hungry, you're really thirsty. So drink water before you decide to indulge! Also don't eat on the run, make sure everytime your family eats, you sit down and take your time to do it, you'll be more satisfied with your meal!
Buy one or two snacks at a time with each shopping trip between now and your trip, so it doesn't feel like its breaking your bank so badly.
Have a garage sale between now and your trip and use that extra money for food and tips.
I don't know how old your kids are but maybe make them pay for any extra snacks outside of your snack credits!

On our last trip, our kids did pressed pennies. Since they are in most of the shops, we sped through looking for the penny machines and they ignored most of those trinkets in the ride exit shop. We spent about $20 for the pennies and the book to put them in but it saved us in the long run. For our next trip, we have a quarter jar and a penny jar to save for pressed pennies. All other change (and any leftover pennies after we fill our m&m tubes) will be cashed in for extra money. Extra quarters go in my laundry ziplock bag. :)

I know you're on the regular dining plan, but I love the QSDP because it comes with lots of snack credits that I can then use as treats/surprises for my kids. Instead of getting a toy, they can pick out some edible treat. I think this has saved us a good amount in the long run.

I also give them a $25 gift card that they can spend as they wish. And they have saved up about $4 extra on their own (they are only 5 & 6). Once their money is gone, it's gone, and there isn't anymore coming their way. I know that sounds mean, but they are blessed with many things and frankly probably don't even need the $25.

We've done the QSDP a few times now and feel it is a good value. I don't ever need to buy extra (although I'm taking my DS to TRex with a coupon as a special treat this time; it's one of his few requests) and always have plenty of food/drinks.

Oh, and one final suggestion. Try to use your snack credits wisely and keep track of how much you have left. Pace yourself. There are certain snacks that are a much better use of your credits. Pop over to the Dining board for more info. And buy things with reuse in mind--ie, which dessert would work well for breakfast the next morning/snack the next day?

Look into an envelope system for each day. Any cash for trinkets you might want to buy can be placed and there and when it is gone it is gone.

Pressed pennies are a good idea

Will only buy one big thing at the end of the trip

Look into pin trading or autographs

CS kids meals- great value for $5 use mugs for hot cocoa and get drinks for park or fridge (milk) for cereal. Also you get 2 grapes, cookies, or yougart instead of fries, have kids eat one and save the other for a snack later on. If you need more food buy an extra kids meal instead of an adult.

Bring a box of cereal, disposable bowls and spoons and use milk to have breakfast in room.

At Character buffets they will usually let each child take a whole piece of fruit since kids tend to be such small eaters.

Use cash to buy fruit since most pieces are under 2 dollars and save snacks.

Also for about 2 dollars at resorts you can get a plate of eggs which could be a snack but it so cheap I would just pay for it.

Flavored water packets if you family gets bored with plain water.

You should have plenty of food.

I bring a few pkgs of the instant oatmeal for breakfast. The food court has the hot water to make it.

Applesauce cups/pouches make a nice snack or add to some toast for breakfast.

You can get slices of bread in the food court if you don't have a car. They have jam/jelly/marg. and a toaster.

this trip we are bringing breakfast items to eat in the room. even though we were on the dining plan last year we spent a lot of $$$ eating breakfast in the food court every am. i will be packing a box of cereal, some muffins, fruit cups, apple juice, and disposable bowls. we will have the dining plan again this year but i just dont want to spend the extra $$$$ on breakfast. dollar tree also has 6 packs of bottled water for a buck so i will be getting 2, 6 packs.

im not sure which dining plan you are on but i highly recommend getting refillable mugs. if they are not included in your plan and you have to pay out of pocket, they are still worth it . we use them very heavily on our vacations.

DD16 and I went to WDW in August 2010 (wish we were going this year, too), stayed at POP with upgrade to regular DDP (1cs, 1ts, 1 snack per day). We found we could easily share a breakfast at POP's food court, then share a lunch later in the day. The food court has a platter with eggs, meat, hash browns, beverage that was more than enough. We had refillable mugs, so used the "free" beverages with breakfast (coffee, iced tea) and took the meal beverage (bottle of water) to the parks with us. Most cs places in the parks have huge combo meals, too... double burgers with enough fries to feed a horse. We are big eaters in my family, but sharing our cs credits saved us money. We aren't big snackers, and had 4 snack credits left at the end of our trip.

ALSO: We brought some cheap plastic storage containers to carry in the backpack. We are always too full to enjoy dessert after a ts meal, so we took the desserts to go in our own containers (which seal tightly) and enjoyed them while watching the fireworks or back at the hotel. Saves on snack credits, too!

Get glowsticks at the dollar store before leaving home. I usually buy the round tube that has 10 or 12 sticks and connectors, and I buy a couple of them. CHECK THESE IN A SUITCASE... different TSA agents feel differently about passing these through security; I've had them passed through, and I've had them confiscated :confused3.

If your kids are young, steer them away from trinkets and souvies. Pressed pennies are a good idea, and it gets to be a treasure hunt to find the machines. Souvies are never a problem with us... just say no. I don't have any good suggestions if your kids can't handle that. I guess try to avoid shops as much as possible, or bring stuff from the dollar store at home. I read about a family that successfully negotiated out of the souvineer situation by bringing stuff from home and setting up a "morning surprise" each day. Tinkerbelle brought such wonderful toys each morning, straight from the dollar store! For older kids, who won't buy junk and blow their money right away, give them a set amount and tell them that whatever they don't spend, they can keep. Works wonders with older kids, especially if they have a "vanilla" visa or master card. It can be used anywhere at home, too!

Water... yes, iced water is available at any food court or cs, but it's time consuming to stand in line, and I had a couple of places insist that they can only give out one cup per person, so everyone had to wait. We bought Bobbles before going on our trip, and they worked well with tap water. Also, the hole in the top is big enough to slip ice cubes through, so we'd fill the bottles with ice before leaving in the morning. I got two bobbles with filters, shipped from JCPenney, for about $15 (but I know I had a coupon or free shipping or some special deal, can't remember what.) I guess Britta is now doing an individual, filterable bottle, too.

I have a friend who gets free gift cards through her credit card points program. She gets them in $5 denominations (for places like Kroger, Dunkin Donuts, whatever is local in Orlando) and leaves them for mousekeeping instead of a cash tip. Yes, they are free for her, provided she doesn't need the points somewhere else, and I think any mousekeeper would rather have $5 in cash, but this works for them.

How can the DDP be cheaper than out of pocket if you have 16 credits left? In order to just break even, I have to use all my credits. Out of pocket is always cheaper than the DDP for me.

The DxDDP is cheaper than out of pocket if I was going to eat the TS credits.
