My SIL gave me an 8GB iTouch.:yay: SOOOOO very generous of her! I have wanted one but couldn't "justify" it. She gave me a 30gb video ipod several years ago that I still have and it works. I am sure it would be great on vacation with the kids to have more than one ipod.

My concern now it that since I have 15+ digital movies should I ask her for the reciept to upgrade the itouch to a 32gb? I did open it but haven't done anything with it. I'm guessing I would be charged a 10% restocking fee so it would be about $100 to upgrade. I would also feel funny about implying that her gift wasn't good enough when it was already way over generous.

I'm wondering if I just keep the 8gb and let the 3 kids each pick one movie to put on it and just keep using the older generation ipod for more movies.

Thanks for all input!!!!

That really was a generous gift. You may want to look into the return policy at the store where she bought the ipod. Maybe you can do this before even asking her for the receipt. I dont think you can return an open box ipod unless it doesnt work. And even then you might need to return it to apple under there warranty policy instead of returning to the store.

Even if you can return for the extra storage capacity is it worth the extra $100 or so? I mean, 8GB is about 7 movies. Thats almost 14 hours of entertainment. Do you need to be able to carry more around? You dont need to put every digital copy from itunes on your ipods. Just swap them out when you need to.

You can get the serial number from the back of the iPod or packaging. Then, look it up on this website to find out when it was sold. This may help to determine what the exchange policy would be.

I've found the Apple Store personnel to be very helpful with these types of things. My husband bought a used iPod, and the power button didn't work. Because it was still within the 1 year warranty period, I took it to the Apple Store, they verified that the button didn't work, and gave me a new iPod no questions asked. I was in and out of the store in 15 minutes, and most of that time was spent waiting for my appointment time to roll around.

IMO, I would 100% upgrade to the 32gb model. Perhaps you could frame it in terms of wanting to share the generous gift with the kids, and just explain how the extra storage would be so helpful?

Thanks! I was thinking she just bought it at the Apple store because she live close to one but when I checked the serial number it said it was purchased 11/25 which was Thanksgiving day so I'm now pretty sure she bought it from Amazon as she shops from them a lot and she doesn't like malls too much.

I called the Apple support phone and they said I could try an Apple store but she wasn't sure if they do anything for me without a receipt.

I think I'll just keep the 8GB. I really don't want to seem ungrateful or make her feel like she didn't get the right one. I can still use my old one for more variety of movies and music and keep the touch for the best for now.
