What’s really bizarre is the OP said they’re not allowed to leave for lunch.

Yeah, something doesn't seem right. I wish op would come back and explain more. It just does not seem legal to force people to stay in the building for their breaks. How do they enforce this, are there guards at the doors? They do not allow employees to bring in lunch, and are forced to eat unhealthy food from a vending machine? It's just so strange. I can't imagine anyone would think this is a good place to work.

Actually asking for a friend here. Friend works at a job where they are not allowed to take anything into work with them. They go through metal detectors and a light pat down before entering. Once inside they have to are forced to make unhealthy food choices out of a vending machine for meals. Friend is looking for some ideas of what to hide in a pocket that will make it past the metal detectors, a light pat down (the high is below 20 here today so bulky coat weather) and be healthier than vending machine but still pretty filling. Any ideas?

There are uncrustables and some kind of bologna sandwiches in the vending machine, other than that I'm not sure. No option to leave to go to the car.

Not buying this story. You either misunderstood your "friend" or they are trolling you.

There are way too many medical issues that would be a huge liability for the company if they forbid outside food.

What if they had celiac and ate that uncrustable?

Sorry, you need to question your "friend" and get more information because what you have presented makes absolutely no sense business wise.

Yeah sorry whoever told you this are filling you with BS. You only have to go through quick and easy metal detectors at Amazon warehouses as a picker or any other job and then you are free to go have your own brought from home (or where ever) lunch in the lunchroom (where it's stored). You go back through the metal detectors easily to return to your work. I know from personal experience and then experience of my DF who worked there for years.

The only thing I can come up with is maybe a secure medical research facility where they are worried about contamination from outside sources. Even then, though, they should be providing decent choices for their workers if they are forcing them to stay in for their entire shift.

It’s not just the no outside food, it’s the whole no outside food+you can’t leave even to go to your car+There’s no cafeteria (or any type of actual food available) that’s so utterly bizarre. I could maybe under very specific circumstances understand one of those things, but all three is crazy!!

If the OP is a troll they got me good because I desperately want to know what kind of work environment this is lol. Hopefully they’ll come back and explain.

We had a vending machine, and it was stuff from a restaurant. Sandwiches, salads, etc. Not all vending machines are equal.

Maybe. I guess I could see if a portion of the facility was secure. But workers should be able to move in and out of the sanitary/secure area. It just seems weird to work somewhere where once you are in the building you cannot leave until your shift is over and you can't bring in food and your only option is to eat out of a vending machine. That workers are trying to sneak food in by stuffing it down their pants to avoid a metal detector and pat down is downright bizarre to me.

I don't know, but I am pretty picky about my food intake these days. I would seriously explore the option of a workplace accommodation, and I bet I could get my doctor to support me (and my boss would as well).

I can see a ban say, on peanuts if there were concerns about another having a peanut allergy, but a casual Google search seems to indicate a blanket prohibition on bringing your lunch is illegal under Federal law.

When he worked nights it was a really good night if there was a relief available for breaks. Shutting the whole thing down would have been a very big deal. I think some people used bottles for urine, but you basically had to call in sick if you foresaw a need for other bathroom usage during that time. He carried jolly ranchers in his pocket to wet his dry mouth, no crumbs, he could get them in his mouth without touching them and they didn't make him need to use the restroom.

Uncomfortable and not something I would wish on anyone, but I don't think it's THAT unusual.
