Need ideas of food to sneak in

Sounds almost like an Amazon warehouse.

I have read many stories about the working conditions of Amazon warehouse pickers. They complain that while they are allowed to leave for lunch, the security they must return through greatly limits their lunch break since the time clocks are after security.

Employees at Amazon warehouses are not allowed to bring outside items past security. They have two break rooms, one inside security and one outside security.

I live about 3 miles from an Amazon distribution center and know tons of people who work there (including several of my mom friends who work there to make extra money over the holidays). It's not as all as you describe; in fact, they said it's a pretty decent place to work except you are on your feet the whole time you're working.

And, the OP's story strikes me as false. My DH works in all sorts of really high-security situations and he's never had any sort of restrictions on food.

There were times in my husband's job over the years where he did ten hour shifts with no food or drink and no bathroom access. There was machinery that could not be contaminated or left unsupervised. When he worked nights it was a really good night if there was a relief available for breaks. Shutting the whole thing down would have been a very big deal. I think some people used bottles for urine, but you basically had to call in sick if you foresaw a need for other bathroom usage during that time. He carried jolly ranchers in his pocket to wet his dry mouth, no crumbs, he could get them in his mouth without touching them and they didn't make him need to use the restroom.

Uncomfortable and not something I would wish on anyone, but I don't think it's THAT unusual.

Sounds like my husbands work place. he's a printer at a big plastic company.

Actually its not.

That might depend on where you live. In MA, employers are required to give two 15 minute breaks per day if you work an 8 hour shift, plus a lunch break (that can be paid or unpaid at the employer's discretion). So in some places, yes it is illegal to deny breaks.

At the risk of feeding the trolls, there are some research situations that don't reach the level of needing clean rooms, but which still prohibit food being present. I can tell you that plant research laboratories tend to have that rule; it's because of a risk of bringing in or providing a food source for pests that might contaminate or eat other research projects. Fresh fruit is a particular no-no. However, I know of no facility where there isn't somewhere in the building where employees can store and eat their own food.

One hospital I know of prohibits all hourly workers from leaving the premises during a shift. It's because traffic around the facility is so congested, and parking so scarce in the area, that it is almost impossible to leave and come back in under 30 minutes, which is the standard meal break given. (BTW, those of us who are old may remember a time when Federal law did assure breaks. It used to be that Federal law allowed one paid 15 minute break for every 4 hours of continuous work time, but that was eliminated during the first Reagan administration. I vividly remember when it happened; my then-employer acted like they should be considered as generous as Mother Theresa when they decided not to take our breaks away from us. Minimum wage at the time was $3.10 an hour & we were all part-time, so they were giving us a princely $3.90 gift every week.)

The OP is definitely missing some information somewhere.

What’s really bizarre is the OP said they’re not allowed to leave for lunch.

Why is that bizarre? I’m not allowed to leave for lunch. I get paid for lunch where I work at those who get paid for lunch are not allowed to leave. Those who don’t get paid for lunch can leave.

That quote was in context of the poster I quoted. It’s not bizarre by itself, but it seems very odd to me that this person works somewhere that they a) cannot leave to even eat food in their car b) cannot bring food and c) have no access to food inside their work building. Usually one or two of those things might apply but all three really seem like a lot of crap without really specific insight into the work place.

This may be more common than I realize but this is the first I’ve heard of a workplace where people are essentially only able to eat from a basic vending machine for the duration of their shift.

What if it's like some really top secret, black site kinda facility... medical research, high level defense, bio-terrorism, CIA, special OPs?

And they're working on some kind of majorly secret, highest-level security, "the nation is at risk" kinda project?

And it's sooooo top-level, they can't bring any food in because it'll contaminate the building, & they can't leave during their "shift" because of all the different security protocols & bio-hazard screenings. And it's sooooo top-level that, even though they can't bring in food or leave to go get food, neither can they have a cafeteria because of the security screenings the cafeteria workers & food deliverers & extra kitchen maintenance would have to go through to be able to be in the facilities.

And it's all underground & windowless & gray w/ multiple bio screenings & locked doors w/ passcodes that change every random minutes & even the President doesn't know about Project Omaha.

And, every day, every 108 minutes, someone has to push a button that resets the timer or the world explodes.

And poor dude just wants to eat a banana every now & then instead of a decades-old Dharma candy bar from out of the vending machine.

I don't know if it's been covered, this is probably the type of place. There are warehouse/fulfillment centers around here and they search the employees upon entering and leaving. It's not that you can't leave for lunch, but if you have a half-hour break, you can expect to spend 20 minutes of it in line to get checked by security on the way out and back in, so it makes it impractical.

^^ That makes sense. Telling someone they can't use the restroom during a 10 hr shift makes NO sense, regardless of the job. Some of the other posted examples read like an episode of 'can you top this?' and sound like nonsense also.
