Ok, I could use some help with my DS's room. He will be 13 in July and I told him we could repaint his room.

Does anyone know of any websites to get some ideas? I tried doing some browsing but only came up with very fancy things.

He is your typical preteen, laid back & a big slob (whoops, that's my son I'm talking about):teeth: Right now his room has newspaper clippings/posters covering one entire wall. I was thinking about putting corkboard on that wall so that he doesn't have to use tape.

I'll probably end up buying him a new comforter, etc because the one he has now is camouflage and I guess he's decided he doesn't want that anymore (It's only two yrs old). I'm NOT buying new bedroom furniture! He was lucky that his Grammy bought him a brand new bedroom set when he was 3 and it's beautiful!

Ok, I've rambled on enough. Hope someone has some great ideas!

Thanks,
Annette:wave2:

check out this site:
www.pbteen.com

the catalog is TONS of fun...

then go to your local Target/Bed Bath and Beyond/Linens-n-things and replicate what you like. (Pottery Barn is nice - but VERY overpriced IMO.)

if you want to change the furniture (or he really wants to) - why not strip it and paint it?

and don't throw out a perfectly good comforter - why not just get a duvet cover to put over it? plus - makes it VERY easy to 'wash' if he spills something on the bed...just take the duvet off and throw it in the wash.

have fun!

My husband crafted a great hat rack, picture frames, and even a computer chair out of hockey sticks. (As a fellow hockey-mom, you know those are a constant resource!)

I've covered closet doors with corkboard and used cut hockey sticks for framing.

Bit of a hockey theme going here....

As a designer,,,, and master carpenter and cabinet maker,, he he he ( currently unable to actually work though) whats he into, is he outdoorsy? computer nerd wanna be? take his biggest thing,, turn to your advantage and start playing around,, we did a bed room for a computer gamer a while back that was born in conn.. told his mom he wanted to theme his room in the fall colors and outdoorssy stuff,,, i can mail ya pics if ya want,, we did a leaf desk that wrapped room,,, designed to fit over the white plastic drawer and storage units from w-m as a cost saver,,, leaf shaped wall shelves and hangings,, another idea,, especially if he into the graffiti look,,, (surprisingly graffiti walls are coming back in kids design) get refridgerator boxes from local stores,, use th card board to cover wall and paint it in a nuetral color, let him and his buds have a set of over sized sharpies and take off,,, or if you are artsy,, and he want a castle theme,, or space theme,,, cover walls with cardboard, paint away,, this also works well if you are living in a rental and arent allowed to change paint coloring boxes are free for the asking most the time,, and with a lil careful cutting and taping they are a fairly easy wall covering. hope hese help Froggy

What about magnetic paint? I think that's what it is anyway....you can attach magnets to it. Then he could hang things there.

When my son was about that age, he and his dad put a shelf about 18 inches from the ceiling around the entire perimeter of his bedroom. He has his autographed basketballs, trophies, model cars, Beanie Babies, a couple school projects (he's very artistic), a Lego Spongebob, etc., displayed up there. Things like ribbons hang from it. It looks really cool and allows him to display a lot of stuff but up out of the way. All of his friends want one -- I think some of them have actually installed one.

I just built a new house last year and had a designer help me for the first time. I used a reasonable designer and some of her ideas were great for my boys rooms. One was in each one's room she did an arrangement of the their initials. You can buy some pretty letters at Pottery Barn but she picked some up at different flea markets like an iron looking "M" and a wooden "S" etc. They were different sizes - maybe about 10 in all. She just kind of arranged them on one wall - some were lying on their side and intermixed them with some pictures. I had lots of pictures in frames of my boys and she used more recent ones to mix in with the initials. (She had also done this for her 1 year old grandson). Then when they were out they could always add to the collection. some of the letters were beat up. She used all 3 initials. Anyway, it looked cool- not babyish and something that looks good in the room- still looks like their room even though they are in college.

She also used some greenery interdispersed with books on their desks and that looks really good. I normally wouldn't have thought to put plants in my boys' rooms.

Just picked up Trading Spaces for Kids at the Scholastic Book Fair yesterday. My DD says they have alot of great ideas and that they look pretty easy to do. She is 11 and eager to try out some of the ideas. Maybe your DS would like to get some books and look for ideas for his room.

We made curtain rods out of my son's old hockey sticks. Now if I could find something to make out of those smelly old pants.....

I recently did my son's room. He is 11 and I hope this will suit him until we boot him!

Anyway, I painted his room the colors of his football team. Luckily he really likes those colors. I found locker wall paper on line somewhere and put that on two walls. I had one of those closet design places come in and install a professional looking sports locker with lots of hooks and drawers to keep his clothes organized. I put some sports themed borders on two other walls. He already had a comforter set with sports stuff on it that luckily matched the color scheme. On the top of the locker I put some outgrown football helmets, shoulder pads and team phots. I decorated the walls with his old jersey and karate gei. I had a lot of fun doing it and my son loves it.

Wow, you guys have some REALLY GREAT ideas! I knew I could count on my DIS friends!

two4ruff & djh96 - great ideas using the old hockey sticks! I would never have thought about using them as frames....cool! :cool2: I thought about somehow figuring out how to put some of his old jerseys up on the walls too.

two4ruff - do you happen to have a picture of the hat rack? I would love to see some of those ideas! He does have a coat rack out of sticks.

nkjzmom - I love the idea about the magnetic paint. Have you ever used it? That might be better than the cork board.

bentley483 - I didn't even know they had a book out like that. I think I'll be heading to the library this weekend!

Tar heel - My son already has quite a few shelves in his room and I do believe adding them around the top of his entire room is the next step. He just doesn't have enough space for all his collections/trophies.

stinkerbelle - I checked out that site and one of the rooms showed camo!! Maybe he'll stick with it!!??

IMGONNABE40 - (I am too in July:sad: ) great ideas!

babylisa4 - I like the idea about the initials. Considering that my son's name is Bo - that would be pretty easy!

FroggyinArk - I am going to send you a pm. I would love to see some of your pictures of work you have done. By the way, I read about your accident and you truly are an inspiration! When you're all better and back to work, you can come to PA and do my son's room!

Thanks again everyone! I think I will be busy the next couple of weeks checking out different ideas! The best part is that my Ex said he would help my son with it!!! All I have to do is the shopping!!:teeth:

My DS is 13 and we gave him free choice for colors for his room. Two walls are bright blue, one wall Mickey pants red, the last wall bright lime green. Yes, we kinda puked when he picked them out, but they do look good in the room. One of the blue walls we put two giant dry erase boards on for him to draw on. The other blue wall, I am putting hundred of blank CD's and it looks great. The red wall will have laminated ZIT's cartoons that he likes on the wall. He is so much like the teenager in that cartoon, that he is covering the red wall with the cartoons.

The wall with the CD's looks great, but it takes a bit to collect those AOL CD's from the stores.

My DS's room is painted a bit like the Seychelles flag, I used masking tape to mark it off, and then painted the sections in different colours, including silver and glow in the dark paint! The glow in the dark looks light green, and at night when you turn the light off, the effect is fantastic. We've had hours of fun holding our hands in front of the paint, then turning off the main light, and holding a blacklite over the wall - you can see the hand reflection!

I am also wondering how to do my 13 year olds room. I asked him what color he wanted and he said he though black would be cool. I knew better than to ask:rolleyes:

Glow in the dark paint sounds cool. Hey Lanshark, maybe you can do that with the black paint!

So far my DS said he likes red. We'll see what he actually ends up picking out. It should be very interesting!

 I got the name of the book wrong Hockeymom.
It is Trading Spaces Boys vs Girls. Sorry!

still searching the ol brain for that idea for the hockey pants,,, have a cpl but not anything really enlightening,, was thinking along line of a stuffed hockey player to stand in a corner,, like the lawn jockeys that used to find thier way into ppls yards...lol... either that or cut in half and use as throw pillows.. stuff and stitch each leg.. advice from a pro,, dont paint entire room red,, or black either,, use that as an accent wall,, or trim color,, both of those can be very over powering in a small area,,, we painted a 15 yr old girls br in a pepto pink with black trim and a white zebra print fabric,, her design not ours,, we hated it so much we wouldnt even take pics to add to our book,,lol,, and i take pics of every thing,, hockeymom,, if ya liked the leaf room,,, you shoulda seen the before pictures i took of it,, had to just to prove to ourselves all that junk was there when we started, lol red,,, hockey,,, red,,,,,,, hmmmm maybe try a red circle on the wall with a round mirror in center? then border mirror with scrapbook style pics of hockey stuff,,, framed by crossed sticks,,,, with and old jersey stapled eiother side,,, over additional red circles, or do the olypic rings and put the jerseys, etc into ech ring,,, hmmm i have drs appoint ment tommorrow,, i'll take my sketch pad and see what i can get ,, he is still into hockey right...lol... would hate to see him get htis neat hoickey theme room and then be like ya know hockey s kinda old,,,,
careful frog,, you gonna start a new trend here and end up designing rooms all over the world,,,lol,, i love it:)

That's another use for the old sticks ... use them as hangars ... put the stick through the sleeves (as if it was a really long set of arms), then use thumb tacks to tack the sleevs to the stick, so the jersey stays stretched out.

Another thing you could do with the jerseys is hang them on the ceiling. Tack (or screw) down all 4 corners, so it's flat against the ceiling, rather than hanging down. Or, if you're good with a sewing machine, I suppose you could make a patchwork quilt, or a set of drapes from the old jerseys

Oh my Gosh, I love the idea about using the sticks as hangers!!! I think I'll do that with some of his jerseys!
