need ideas for stashing money away

Are you more concerned about "how" to save or just "where" to hide it? If you are looking for ways to save, check out the Budget Board.... that is a frequent topic for us over there!! (Just avoid the"There's a sale at the Disney Store" posts.... those end up costing me big time!)

As for ways to hide it, you could try getting a passbook savings account. That way there are no statements mailed to the house. And it can have just your name on it. Bank of NH offers a passbook.... I know because that is where I keep my "Mickey Money":p ! THere is no ATM card with it so it is not overly easy to access it. But I drive by it often enough that I can make frequent deposits.

BTW, you don't drive a red MPV minivan by any chance, do you? I saw one in Concord this morning by the mall with WDW stuff all over it and thought of you!!..................P

Nope, not me.....I have a minivan with 4senuf on it.

I did the same and bought Disney $$'s to make it a surprise. Whenever I came across some extra money I'd go over to the Disney Store and buy some dollars. In a year I had $800.00. My husband was shocked to find that I could hide 800.00 of our money from him in a year's time. He thought he knew where every penny went.

I say Pre-paid credit card. AAA offers them with a Visa logo on them. Discover offers them. Accepted like a gift card anywhere that takes Visa/Discover. That way the money is still iquid and can be spent somewhere else if need be, but offers the security of not having statements, etc.

Just a thought!

I would just get cash back whenever you go shopping and then hide the cash.

That's what I would do. Then take that cash and stash it, trade it in for Disney Dollars or put in on a VISA gift card thing.

My ILs gave us Bank of America gift credit cards for Christmas they work like debit cards with a PIN and all. We could add money to them if we wanted. It said it had a service fee of about $6 - I don't know if that's per addition, or just for starting one.

If you don't want to open a savings account, just put the money in an envelope and keep it in one of your dresser drawers.

or put it under the house cleaning supplies. Most men wouldn't find it.

Have you really looked around the ing site? Dh and i have an orange account there, but there are lots of other accounts that they've offered us like a CD and things like that. You don't need to get a statement in the mail. You can just have an electronic statement sent to your email address. That way your Dh wouldn't have to know, unless of course he looks at your email. You might find something you like.

If you are a AAA member, you can get Travlers Check for free and also some banks offer them for free too. That's a great picture of your DS, how proud you must be!!!

I would do some homework on those preloaded credit cards since they seem to come with conditions.

Here's from the Discovercard site:

Q: How long can I use the Discover Gift Card?
A: Your gift card expires twenty-four (24) months from the time of purchase; this date will be embossed on the front of the card. Please note that we assess a monthly maintenance fee of $2.50 per month if you do not use your card for six (6) consecutive months.

I have an old savings acct at a bank where we banked at years ago where I stash money. I usually put all bonus paychecks and my summer paychecks in it. I have paid for several vacations this way. I thought I was really keeping a good secret until the bank statement arrived and DH made it to the mailbox before I did. He opened it....thinking we havent banked here in years and saw a balance of several thousand dollars.....I still banked my stash in the acct and I always hear about how ridiculous it is and that I should just add it to the family acct....No way it would get absorbed and we wouldnt get to do the nice vacations.
My dh took over all of the bill paying several years ago....there are nice things about it.....like I dont give the bills a second thought now, but he knows everything and is very picky about receipts....
