My DD's spelling sentences have to all be about a topic, which doesn't really make sense, because they're totally unrelated! Usually, we're able to make something up, but this time we're stumped!

So please take a look at these words and tell me what topic we could use to group them together!!!!

later
turn
group
half
living
United States
order
course
American

Good luck!

The pilgrims, civil war, immigration, womens rights movement.

I thought of the Pilgrims too - - the only problem is that we used the Pilgrims last week - LOL!

I'm not sure if she can repeat a topic..............

Uuuummmmm... US history?
How many do you have to have in the same sentence?
Good luck with it. :)

A trip to a restaurant with friends. While chatting with the waiter, you discover that he comes from another country.

Immigration

ethnic groups in the United States

Migration

We're working on something with history, but she's only 8, and the sentences have to come from her own knowledge. This is so frustrating!

Oh got it  ... trying to get a table at Le Cellier ...

'try later good American sir, there is many a group before you, only half of which are living in the United States, you must wait your turn to order a main course'

:lmao: :lmao:

Has she been to WDW or DLR? if so, how about describing a visit to the Hall of Presidents, and how it relates to remembering American history, in that the country was founded by people immigrating from different countries before they became Americans!

Does she know about the American revolution?

She can write about how a group of men living half a world away wanted to turn this country into a country that was apart from the British. In order to do this they had a war and it took it's course and we were then the United States and then later people that lived there would be called American.

I think I got that at about an 8 year old level

American Civil War and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. I'm a civil war re-enactor and a civil war nerd - I could whip that up in a heartbeat! Man I would love to help my kid come up with something for that list of words. What a cool idea!

ETA: Oh nevermind - she's only 8 and unless she's been getting CW history drilled into her since before birth, I guess that wouldn't work.

I was thinking weather/winter might be a fun topic. :)

Thanks Everybody!

We ended up using the Pilgrims again, because they've been learning about them for a month. I really didn't know what else to do, without doing it for her (which I don't do!).

Sometimes the words are so incredibly unrelated, it's a ridiculous notion to try to think of a topic that ties them together. We spend so much time agonizing over it. And it makes me wonder --- what skill is that teaching!??!??!

Listen to the news and then write the sentences about the Big 3 wanting a bailout. :lmao:

later - The car companies might need more money later.

turn - Some people want to know when it will be their turn to get taxpayer money.

group - There is a group of car companies asking Congress for money.

half - If Congress doesn't give them some money, more than half their employees will be laid off.

living - Many of the people who will be laid off are living in Michigan.

United States - In the United States many jobs are connected to the car industry.

order - Orders for cars have been lower this year.

course - Of course, there is a lot of discussion over Congress lending the companies money.

American - There are three major American car companies.
