I'm embarressed to admit that I know nothing about ipods. 2 of my dd's ages 11 (almost 12) and 14 asked for them for Christmas.

What are some good recommendations that aren't *too* expensive for their age group?

TIA!

I bought a 1 gb refurbished one from the apple website for $59 for DN for Christmas (she's 13). She has a shuffle right now but is ready for an upgrade.

I know nothing either so I got DD the one she asked for but the newer generation one. She wanted the Nano 2nd generation and I got her the 3rd generation, I think. I have been TORTURING her telling her there is no way, no how I am spending $200 on an IPOD. Little does she know her IPOD is in my desk at work :cool1: . She is now 'saving money' to buy her own :lmao: .

The new IPOD Nano's are the way to go. They are so much better than the earlier versions. If you are trying to save some $ then go for the one with 4Gig of memory.

The new 4GB Ipod Nanos retail for about $200 and they play video now too. And they come in lots of pretty colors.

Why pay $200.00 for a 4 or 8 GB Nano when you can get an 80 GB iPod Classic for $40-50 more?

The 4gb is $149 and the 8gb is $199.

For a 12 and 14 year old, I'd go with the 8gb Nano.

I'm not the OP, but for me personally I don't like the size of the Classic. I prefer the smaller nano that I can just throw in my pocket or into an armband to run. That's just me though. If someone likes the Classic iPod then spending the extra $40-50 is worth it.

I was just looking at the new Nano's early and I believe the only colour the 4GB comes in is silver. The 8GB has the silver, green, blue, red and black!

Ditto for me, the classic just seems too big and clunky for me. And I can't see how I would ever need as much memory as the classic has, I'd be clicking through songs for ages trying to find the one I want to listen to. Honestly, if I were to spend the extra $$, I'd probably get the touch before the classic. But that's just MHO! :)

  • iPod Shuffle: $79 - 1GB - no screen - silver, blue, green, purple, red
  • iPod Nano: $149 - 4GB - small, colour screen - silver only
  • iPod Nano: $199 - 8GB - ssmall, colour screen - silver, blue, green, black, red
  • iPod Classic: $249 - 80GB - standard sized - colour screen - silver or black
  • iPod Touch: $299 - 8GB - full size widescreen with internet, youtube etc
  • iPod Classic: $349 - 160GB - standard sized, colour screen - silver or black
  • iPod Touch: $399 - 16GB - full size widescreen with internet, youtube etc

I'd go for a Nano.

Also don't feel limited to apple products, which require the download and use of a large chunk of software. There are non-apple mp3 players that play video and have large storage capacity.

I'm trying to decide too. I have two teens who don't have them and really want them.

The price I saw is more like:

$80 - 1GB
$150 - 4GB
$200 - 8GB
$250 - 80GB

Barbossa, do you know of somewhere with better prices than what I found?

I am thinking the 4GB (nano) should be enough for them (my kids), plus I think this one holds pictures and video too, and the 1GB (shuffle) doesn't (right)?

Check them out online like bestbuy or right on the apple website or wherever. It says the 4GB stores 1,000 songs or 25,000 pictures, which should be plenty for my teens for now. (if they don't lose them in a couple of years, maybe upgrade them, and they can give the "old ones" to mom & dad!). :thumbsup2

So really it is $100 between the 4GB and the 80GB and $100 really is a lot of money - especially times two kids, or $200!

OP: Good luck with your choice, don't be embarassed!! I don't know anything more than what I have just started looking at online. Also, there seems to be endless accessories for these things. Should make birthday ideas and future christmas ideas easy!

I have a 16GB Touch and it kicks tail! The internet is snappy and perfectly formed, the iTunes wireless music store is convenient, the movie playback is breathtaking and the miscellaneous other features all prove themselves useful.

Be aware, though - Touches cost! I guess you get what you pay for, though - I've yet to see ANY product save the iPhone that comes close to competing with the Touch.

I bought the 8 GB Nano and love it except that I am out of room - I wish now I had spent the money on the classic! I started out with the shuffle but couldn't choose songs so went back and got the nano - now what I really want is a classic touch! They don't have it yet, but it has to be coming!!!

If your kids have many CDs, 4 GB is not much room..... especially if they like to download podcasts....

8gb is not really enough for me but DH has a Classic and it's massive, relatively speaking. :rotfl2:

I asked Santa for an 8gb and I just plan to have to manage it.

I bought the 80 GB Classic over the weekend from Amazon for $228.00. They've since sold out and are selling it through J&R Music World for $249.00. I don't know if this was a Black Friday price or if they'll offer it for $228.00 when they get more stock. It was the best price I could find at the time. Good luck on your search!

The problem is the I-Touch is addictive. I got one for DD and one for myself the next week.

:headache: Oh yeah you're right! I got confused because when I bought my 4GB 2nd Generation it was $199. Now I've got nano envy.

Nanos are a bit more sturdy than the iPod Classic (which has a hard disk drive versus solid state Flash memory for the Nano). This might be a factor when considering which model to purchase for kids.
