Oh great :sad2: from what you guys are saying, I'm probably going want one for myself, I've never actually seen one in "real life" :rotfl:

Hmmm. maybe these kids will learn to love some new socks for Christmas! Momma needs a Nano!

Also don't feel limited to apple products, which require the download and use of a large chunk of software. There are non-apple mp3 players that play video and have large storage capacity.

iTunes is a large chunk of software? :confused3

Itunes is placed on your computer and it is not that big of a program. I think about 20 megs. If you get the 4gig Nano you just have to manage what you keep on it. With the large Ipods you can put your whole album collection on them, with the smaller capacity you may be limited to 10,000 songs.

I have the 4 gig and when I fill it up I just move off old songs I don't listen to anymore.

Some people just don't like it and it's true that it's not as good on Windows as it is on Mac.

Me? I love it on both platforms. Can't be beat.

I just bought DD10 a 4g iPod Nano (3rd Generation) yesterday. Got it online through Best Buy for $152.11 with tax / free shipping. (It was on sale for $142.49.) Today it's 149.99 again. Not much of a sale really. I waited until Cyber Monday thinking I could get a great deal on one. I don't know about you folks but I didn't find ANY good deals on ANY of the things that I need. I can vouch that the 4GB only comes in Silver.

OP, I just want to clarify your use of the word "Ipod". Are you looking for only the Ipod brand MP3 players or are you referring to all MP3 players as "Ipods"?

This is an important distinction because there are some very, very good brands of MP3 that are much less expensive than the actual Ipods.

I just bought 3 Microsoft Zune MP3 players. They are 30 GB with video, and I paid $100 from J&R Music World (because they are brown. The other colours are $199.! )

Anyway, I haven't tried them because they are Christmas gifts but they do get very good reviews. Sandisk products also get good reviews.

I can't figure out why the only available color for the 4gb is silver??? :confused3 does that make sense to anyone? Would it be a stock issue, or did they only manufacture them in silver? (sorry if this is a really stupid question).

I think it's an incentive to pay the extra $$$ for an 8GB Nano.

I second this. My MP3 player is actually made by Cowon/iAudio. iAudio players are one of the best sounding units available with plenty of tone control options (EQ, bass boost, BBE aural excitation, 3D effects). If you're looking for a great sounding unit, the iAudio players run circles around iPods. This doesn't mean much to most kids who want the "cool factor" of a real iPod, though.

Re: ITouch

Is there a monthly subscription fee to use the internet feature?

(I could check it out on the internet myself but haven't yet, so I'm bein' lazy and decided to just ask you!) Is the price comparable to iPod? Do they hold photos and videos etc? My DS18 is really into music (ok, and me too! :rolleyes1 ), and I think I'd - er, I think he'd appreciate better sound - If I could afford it, that is ;)

That is evil - genius, but evil !!
with two kids, I would prefer them to be different colors - the iPods, that is - not the kids. :lmao:

Anyhow...I'm gonna have to look at MP3's and iPods, and figure somethin out. I am concerned about the "if it's not a real iPod, I ain't cool" factor. we'll see.

As the mother of a sixteen year old girl I recommend an iPod. There are other good players but most teens want iPods.

For the ultimate in cool, you could go for the Bang & Olufsen MP3 player. Beware though - it doesn't store much, has no screen and is very limited. Frankly, it's for posing.

Wish I had one...

iAudio's prices are in line with iPod (they have to be) for the same general features. They support video and photos, though I suggest reading CNET's reviews on all of the devices you're considering to get the pros and cons. And, if the surprise factor isn't critical, have DS18 do most of the research. I'm sure he's highly motivated! :)
