Need books similar to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series....

The 39 Clues series! My son has read all 10 books (well so have I and Dh too). The library at his school now has a waiting list of atleast 40 students for the first book in the series. This series is best read in order from book 1 to book 10 because each book builds on the previous.

This is a great series for both boys and girls since it is about a brother and sister.

My DS9(just finished Diary of WK) brought home Black Lagoon Adventures today. He likes them :)

Another series my DS8 loves is the Baseball Card Adventure series by Dan Gutman. Not like Diary of a Whimpy Kid but it is a series he has reread. About a kid that travels back in time to meet real players (Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, etc) using magic baseball cards. If you have a kid that likes sports or trading cards, I suggest this.

What about the set of 3 Ralph Mouse by Beverly Cleary? Another book DS9 read this fall was George Brown Class Clown and it was pretty funny. It's probably considered an easier read, but it was in his 3rd grade book order.

My DSS loves the Daniel X series and Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. They are a little more advance then the Wimpy Kid series, but they held his interest and he loved the fact that he read a "big" book! :rotfl:

If he likes sports I second the Dan Gutman Baseball card series...DS9 loved all of those and has a hard time finding anything he likes beyond Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He is also just now getting in Mike Lupica...he is reading The Batboy right now and loves all of the details so that you can "see" what he is saying.

I volunteer at the school library and the 39 Clues series and Bone series have a huge waiting list

My recommendations (I'm an elementary school librarian):

My Weird School by Dan Gutman...easy to read and very funny! (characters are a 2nd grade class)

My Weird School Daze by Dan Gutman (the characters are in 3rd grade now)

Mostly Ghostly series by R.L. Stine (spinoff of Goosebumps)

Rotten School series by R.L. Stine (boys especially like these)

39 Clues...my kids either love 'em and can't wait to read the next one or they can't stand them and read one then have no interest in the other books

The Wayside School series by Louis Sachar is great. They are VERY FUNNY - really pretty much silly and kids love them. They have lots of short chapters which make for a quick read. I have thoroughly enjoyed them also. This series is one of the few that my DD10 will still pick up and re-read. These books are absolutely appropriate for both boys and girls and probably boys will even like them better.

I have another 9 year old son who is a huge fan of captain underpants. Certainly not my first choice for reading material-but it's the ONLY things he is excited about reading (other than pokemon cards.)

Hank Zipzer is a series written by Henry Winkler. Also Joey Pigza, about a young boy with ADHD and all the misadventures he gets into. There are 3 or 4 books, I think.

I'll second the Big Nate books.
DS also likes
the Pirate School series by Brian James
Roland Wright series by Tony Davis
Dragon Slayers' Academy series by Kate McMullan and Bill Basso
I'll also chime in with
NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense... by Michael Buckley
Justin Case: School, Drool, and Other Daily Disasters by Rachel Vail
Horrible Histories series
History in a Hurry series

The books I remember from before and now that my sons liked to read are:

Beverly Cleary - Henry Huggins, Socks, etc.
Goosebumps
Encyclopedia Brown
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Series of Unfortunate Events
Percy Jackson

My DS10 loves WK books as well as "And then it happened" series. I think there are 9 or so in this series. They are short story/chapter books and funny (to a 10 year old boy)...

Great thread! :thumbsup2

My son likes the 'Bone' books - illustrated book, reads them voraciously; and the Percy Jackson illustrated book as well. He also loves loves loves the Goosebumps series (he likes a little 'creepy' in his books  ) and there are dozens of those, so he never runs out of things to read. He has started reading some of the illustrated books that are about comic book characters (superman, spiderman, hulk, etc) - at first I was reluctant because I thought they were just thick comic books, but the vocabulary used in them is actually pretty challenging - and I figure whatever keeps him interested in reading is great with me!

The Bone series.

My DS12 was the same as your DS...he never showed any interest in pleasure reading except for The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series & the Bone series. Those are the only two series he's ever read.

Look into that....I'm sure your DS will love it. There's about 8 books in that series. It's "comic-strip like"..just like The Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

** I got them at Borders.

This is a great thread. My 9 year old is reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series right now but I was looking for some new books for his stocking. thanks!
