Need advice regarding puppy and "cone of shame"......

Our pup got neutered this morning, and since he was licking at his stitches, they sent him home with the cone of shame. We took it off him at home (with the vet's blessing) while we could watch him, and redirected him when he started to lick.

But now he's in his crate for the night, with the cone on, and he's miserable. I don't think he can turn around in his crate with the cone on! He's too young to be trusted out of the crate throughout the night. Will he be okay?

Advice? This is my first dog, and I'm kinda clueless............

I'd ditch the cone and go for an inflatible e-collar, we use one on our dog, much easier for them to get around:

Your vet must neuter young...I was told no younger then 10 months and my thought is I hope my pup is house trained to be trusted at 10 months....

Good luck with the cone of shame in the crate. I would imagine sooner or later he will settle down and just except he can't move in the crate.

It's so funny. My friend's puppy was neutered at the shelter at 6 weeks! My colleague told me to neuter ASAP. My vet advised to wait until 5-6 months. Pup will be 6 months next week. He's quite good at the house training, but he's a bit of a naughty boy when it comes to "off-limits" items (from tissues to stuffed animals, etc.).

Is he licking a lot? I've seen dogs tear their stiches out overnight. I would leave it on for the night just in case.

Or you could try a tshirt. I've seen them work too.

Good Luck! Glad you got him fixed!

Our breeder recommended putting tea tree oil around, but not touching, the incision. The smell and taste worked for us. Do you have a tee shirt you can maybe fashion into a type of "onesie"?
Poor guy! Let us know how it goes!

10 months is very late for neutering, although there are a lot of thoughts on this one

I know he's sad but leave the cone on. I was a vet tech for 10 years, I can not count how many dogs we had to re suture after the dog had the cone off "for just a second". Even if he can't turn around he will be 100 percent ok. They can chew/lick through t-shirts very quickly if they want to, and I've see many many dogs get around the inflatable collars. Most the time they can turn around, it just takes them a bit to figure it out. Give him his pain meds, give him some love and realize this is harder on you than him :) . Also 6 months is a great time to get him neutered, it cuts certain cancer stats way way down by spaying/neutering before "puberty" hits.

I feel your pain. Mine is in the cone for an infected toe. She has figured out how to lick her toe anyway.:sad2: I baby mine more, but she sleeps on the bed with us and that way when she has a need I can tend to it right away. Mine has 2 more weeks of it even after the toe is healed.

My vet won't due until 12 months old....I read ages all over the map on the internet. My girlfriend is a vet in another state so I'm getting her thoughts too...

My dog is 3 years old and I haven't had the heart to spay her yet. I know there's an increased chance of breast cancer now but the thought of putting her through surgery makes me shudder. I'm so scared that she'll die on the table or something. I know it's crazy, but I've lost so many people in my life and she's literally my baby, my best friend. I have to do it, my goal is to do it before her next birthday but I can't imagine seeing her in pain.

As for the OP, I don't believe in crates so I won't be much help but I hope if you give him some pain medication he'll just settle in for the night. I've heard a lot of good things about the e-collars.

Some vets can do pediatric spays at 6 - 8 weeks (must be at least 2 lbs.). Generally, those are vets who specialize in that kind of thing (like an animal shelter or spay/neuter facility).

I foster puppies, and they are generally done at 4 months or so. This is a good video on Fix at Four -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-P0wRfALk0

From an ER vets perspective... Leave it on. He will be fine. Wish I could remember the number of times I've had to repair incisions because people felt "bad" for the cone of shame.

Neuter incisions heal quickly. He likely only needs if for a week or less before it will be healed. When you can watch him closely, it can be off. Otherwise, leave it on.

And thanks for being a responsible owner and neutering your pet.:thumbsup2

::yes:: As someone who fostered 13 puppies between April and the first of November (out now due to neck surgery), I agree 100 percent! I guess spay or neuter is my soapbox, but I've seen so much of the damage from animals left to breed accidentally that it strikes a chord with me.

Thank you! :thumbsup2

My foster failure pup had cherry eye surgery and I had to leave her "cone of shame" on for a couple of weeks because otherwise she'd try to rub her eye! She HATED it at first (and my other dog was terrified of this dog while she had the cone on!)

I think your pup will have to make due. He will be comfortable after a bit.

THANK YOU FOR NEUTERING!!

Hi - One of my foster pups was neutered at 2 years old, while she was in heat! I was terrified all day, but they do this often and everything worked out fine. Plus if you get pre-anesthetic bloodwork that can help tell if surgery is safe or not :)

AGREED!

It's probably too late to help in your situation, but for anyone else facing this, try and find a friend to borrow a crate from that has a REALLY big dog. Because we have multiple sized dogs who are all crate trained, I have multiple size crates, and often loan out my biggest one to friends who need to borrow it for exactly this kind of situation. Even a german shepard can get at least a little more comfortable in it, even with a cone on. (PSA: crates can often be found on Craigslist fairly cheaply...)

I know it's the next day, but we just got our little guy neutered a few months ago, and he did fine in the cone of shame in his crate. He figured out how to turn around, and while he didn't look happy, he was safe, and his stitches stayed in and undisturbed until the vet took them out.

Doesn't it just break your heart when you hear the cone smack into the wall?!?!

You'll probably deal with this again tonight. Hopefully everything went well.

I agree with others - leave it on! He will get over it!
