We live next door to a rent house that is like a rotating bad neighbor home about every 6 months! We have not had good neighbors in that home since the original owners passed away about 10 years ago.

On to the issue. We just got new neighbors about 3 weeks ago. Well they just moved in and brought thier 3 adult dogs and there 5 puppies with them. 1 Adult dog and the 5 puppies stay in a runner on the back of their yard, and cause no noise issues. (We live in an area that sits on very large lots). However, the other 2 dogs bark constantly through the day.

We are a dog home. We do not believe that dogs will be quiet, but when does barking become excessive? Every time any of us come home, the 2 dogs run to the side of their yard nearest to our garage and bark/jump until we get inside our home. It is so annoying. And don't flame me, I understand that it is natural for dogs to bark when they feel like they need to protect their home, but when does it reach the point to contact someone about it?

These neighbors do not seem friendly and keep odd hours. I don't want to call the city without some type of warning to these people, because 1 of the dogs that barks is pregnant, and I don't want the city to just pick them up if no one is home to take care of the matter.

What would you do about this problem?

I'm sorry so long!

this sounds like a job for Von, she spray paints neighbors dogs

First I would call or stop by the neighbors and tell them that (in a nice way) the noise is bothering you. Say it something like "I'm sure you don't realize it, but..." If that doesn't work, call your township and find out what the noise ordinance is in your town. This is what really counts. You can then go back to your neighbor and say that the dogs are still barking and can they please do something about it. Still do this in a nice way. If it doesn't help, call the township and see if they will send a letter to them or send an officer over to say that a neighbor (anonymous) has called to complain about the noise and ask that they give your neighbor a copy of the ordinance. This is the path I would take. I think the township or police can give you a good idea what is acceptible noise in your area too.

With they many dogs, they may need a kennel license. When I lived in Baltimore County, if you had more than 3 dogs, you had to have a kennel license. You may want to look into that aspect of it.

This is a hard issue. Will it be better when it is colder and your windows are closed? We had a howling beagle nearby that kept us up nights when the windows were open.

Maybe the dogs will get used to you over time. They will know your scent and that you belong in "their" space.
The neighbor dog here used to bark but now he ignores me unless you get right up near "his" fence.

Ugh, this sounds very unpleasant I hope you get it resolved.

Carol-

We live in Texas...where it's hardly ever cool enough to keep our windows open!;) The barking is so loud through our custom storm windows that we haven't used our living room for tv since the dogs moved in. (you enter this room when you enter through the garage door)

I called the city today, the limit on Adult dogs is 4. As for the puppies, if they are still nursing from the mother, they can have them in their yard as well.

So we're stuck on that. I think I'm going to write them a note and leave it on their door. We've had dogs live there many times before, but the noise has never been an issue. The man who owns the house is a grouchy old many who very rarely comes to the house anyways. So I doubt going that method would work.

Thanks!

Sounds like our former neighbors moved in next to you. I can feel for your troubles.

We had many run ins with our former neighbors over their dogs (can't say for certain how many, but we know at least 7 plus puppies -- big dogs, Malamutes). They kept them in a dogrun 9 feet from our bedroom (headboard) wall. They were out there day and night -- they claimed they were show dogs and needed their show coats. We went around and around with them until one of the dogs jumped up on the fence and took a bite out of a man I had doing work in our yard (who just happened to walk by them). The neighbor was very laid back about the entire episode. So, we started complaining to the village about the noise. The problem is that the police would come out and unless they actually heard the noise, they couldn't do anything about it. Eventually the neighbor would get ticketed but the quiet would only last for a couple of days and then they would put them back outside. We just continued to call and call. I know it was a hassle to the village but we couldn't even sleep in our own bed at night without getting woken up. It helped that once we started calling/complaining, several other neighbors joined in the crusade to quiet the neighborhood.

Long story, I know, but turns out the Village made them move their dog run as they are not allowed in a side yard. The neighbors were less than happy (we suspect they knew this all along). Eventually, the decided to move. It was one happy day in our neighborhood.

Best of luck. I know from experience it's a tough situation to be in.

I wouldn't leave a note!!!!

Notes never come across as pleasant or nice and will just inflame them. It is better to go in person!

And can you let the dogs smell you and maybe get the neighbor to 'introduce' you to the dogs? It might make them bark less when they see you!

Above all be kind and polite. Even if they are in the wrong, THEY won't see it that way.

Have you tried to make friends with the dogs? Maybe they'll get used to you and then stop the barking quicker when they realize it's you. :)

You could try to meet the dogs but sometimes that doesn't work either. We once lived next to someone who had a big Doberman that constantly threw himself against their chain link fence with a roar whenever he saw us. It scared me silly a few times and went on for months until the dog went away.

Could you put up a privacy fence if you had to? Good luck and let us know how it comes out. I know how frustrating it is.

I just went through this very thing last week. Our neighbors bought a puppy pitbull. They decided to leave it on a chain ALL DAY LONG barking its head off. We have a yellow lab, I am a huge dog lover, but this was just ridiculous. I called the animal control officer to come down and take a look. The neighbor had brought it in (figures) by the time he got there. So the next day when it started barking at 7:00 am, I called him again. It got connected to the police because he didn't pick up and they came and investigated.

Long story short, I haven't heard from this dog since. The presence of the police did it for them. So it might come to that, have somebody come to their door, whether its the dog officer (who actually said there is a law about disturbing the peace) or the police and have them talk to them. Good luck with this!
