Need a new sewing machine - recomendations?

Tonight while working on costumes for our high school's color guard I finally decided I'd had it with my two old hand-me-down machines and their individual problems that make sewing anything on one machine or the other almost impossible. I decided since Saturday is my birthday I'm buying myself a new machine!
Any recomendations for an inexpensive machine that is good for lots of different fabric types? I sew a lot of costumes and they are usually made of either spandex or sometimes lightweight nylon.
I've been sewing for 20 years and never had a new machine so I don't know anything about any particular brand. Any you don't recomend? Any advice would be appreciated.

My husband got me a sewing machine from target for x-mas, for around $100, I've all seen it at Walmart. It's a singer, and I love it. I've made princess costumes, so have sewn with slippery fabric, fleece, etc and have not had a problem.
