DD will be a freshman in high school, shes 14, in August and must read and break down a 200+ page novel over the summer. Biggest requirement is that the book has NOT been made into a movie. Any suggestions?

Water for Elephants :thumbsup2
Oh! My Stars
The Thirteenth Tale

Here is our twins' summer reading list--they will be freshman as well:

A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines
The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde
Tartuffe, Moliere
Major Barbara, George Bernard Shaw
The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams
Monster, Walter Dean Myers
Hard Times, Charles Dickens
Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain

Obviously some of these are movies but not all.

'The Time Traveler's Wife' has been made into a movie but it won't be released until mid-August. If that still makes it not an option, I agree with Water for Elephants.

I also liked 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. Wow!

I really enjoyed reading "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See. I would highly recommend it! :thumbsup2

"Sarah" by Marek Halter or any Marek Halter novel really.

"The Red Tent" By Anita Diamant.

I guess I should read Sarah, because I loved the other 2 choices. I also loved Water For Elephants, like PP's, Jodi Picoults 19 Minutes (she also wrote My Sister's Keeper), The Namesake, The Lovely Bones - there are a lot of good books out there.

I think The Book Thief would be an excellent choice for someone heading into high school.

Just FYI that 'The Namesake' has been made into a movie & released & 'The Lovely Bones' has been made into a movie but not yet released.

I'm honestly not trying to be nit-picky. I'd just hate for your DD to get in trouble because a book she chose comes out as a movie a few weeks or months later.

Just FYI, to be sure of movie status on a title you're considering, search it on IMDB.com. That's pretty much the most comprehensive website of film productions out there -- it lists unreleased titles, things currently in development, straight-to-video, TV movies, you name it.

Oddly, one huge classic that has not been filmed is "Witch of Blackbird Pond." (It is supposedly in development, but it seems to be stalled.) Of course, she probably has already read that one in class.

Would unreleased films still be a problem? I'm presuming that the teacher does not want the students taking the shortcut of seeing the movie instead of reading the book.

DS is required to read this before school starts. He hasn't read it yet, so I have no idea if its good or not.

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

Another vote for "The Book Thief"

"The Kitchen Boy" by Robert Alexander is a great read. It is more than 200 pages -but not much more.
It is about the last Tsar of Russia (fiction)

That is a very powerful book. You might want to read it as well.

I would second The Kitchen Boy (esp to one interested in historical fiction).

"Water for Elephants" is a great book and it is easy to read. It's the only book my husband has actually finished in over 3 years.
