I second Water For Elephants.
I really enjoyed reading "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See. I would highly recommend it!
"Sarah" by Marek Halter or any Marek Halter novel really.
"The Red Tent" By Anita Diamant.
I guess I should read Sarah, because I loved the other 2 choices. I also loved Water For Elephants, like PP's, Jodi Picoults 19 Minutes (she also wrote My Sister's Keeper), The Namesake, The Lovely Bones - there are a lot of good books out there.

I think The Book Thief would be an excellent choice for someone heading into high school.

DS is required to read this before school starts. He hasn't read it yet, so I have no idea if its good or not.
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
Another vote for "The Book Thief"
"The Kitchen Boy" by Robert Alexander is a great read. It is more than 200 pages -but not much more.
It is about the last Tsar of Russia (fiction)
