Need a book to read.......

Another mystery writer to consider is Margaret Maron. Her books are similar to those by Sue Grafton and Donna Andrews in that they're not gory or scary, and she has a great sense of humor.

Lots of great suggestions here; I don't think you'll go wrong with any of them! :)

From your first post, I gather that you like books that are turned into movies. Let me just say that in the Devil Wears Prada, about the only thing that is the same is that the main character's name is the same. Just about everything else is different, and the book goes into a lot more detail and explores the relationships more in depth (for example, in the book, her best friend has a drinking problem and ends up in the hospital; none of that made it into the movie version). I could go on and on, but I won't. :)

Anyway, I work at a video store, and I can give you a couple of other suggestions. There is Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, which is movie starring Christina Applegate and Jonathan Schaech. That book is funny, romantic, and has some sad parts as well. Also I liked The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing; the movie version is Suburban Girl starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alec Baldwin. The book is entertaining and the movie has a great soundtrack along with being funny and sad. Unfortunately I can't remember either of the authors, but the bookstore people can help you with that.

Also, going along with those who don't return library books because they're embarrassed...that goes along with returning rented movies! We have a ton of people that rent and we never hear from them again or can find them, so that item is lost from our inventory. It's just ignorant for people to pay $3.00 to rent a movie and decide to keep it when they can go to Walmart and buy it for $20 or less!

Sandy we have the same tastes! :thumbsup2 I love Diane's Goldy series. The earlier books are the best, in any series I think.

The new Blood Brothers series had a good start. Did you ever read Blue Dahlia, Black Rose and Red Lily? My favorite of Nora Roberts.

I like those too but Rococco is still my favorite :) Have you read Queen of the Big time?

Thanks for the suggestions!! :thumbsup2

I have The Dahlia,Rose, Lilly in my TBR pile (To Be Read)

Ok - this is going to be a little less light-hearted than books you've mentioned, but I L-O-V-E Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series!!! It's part history, part romance, part comedy, part "real"... Its hard to describe, but it is incredibly well written and an easy read.

Ooh OOh OOOOH! I second this recommendation... I LOVE this series... own them all, and can't wait for the next one!
Plus... Jamie.... DROOL!
I think this is where my love for Off Kilter was born... Men In Kilts, Scottish accents, and the like... LOL

I just read Sisters. It was really good but you have to like Danielle Steel's writing style. I haven't read it in such a long time, it kinda bugged me.

I just read through Debbie Macomber's Dakota Born and Dakota Home books. Those were pretty good. I usually read a book every few days ... I need to look into downloanding some books. I bet I would get a TON of work done around here if I could listen to books!!

I get so much done listening to books. It even makes walking on my lunch break something to look forward to. I have also found podiobooks.com to be fantastic. Reminds me of the old radio shows. I can download from my local library. Our system lets us order books online, they mail them to us and they have a return box near by. They use overdrive audiobooks and I can download them to an mp3 player for 1 week. Ipod's won't work with this one.

This series is a light hearted mystery - but not graphic gory - the main character is a woman, and since the series is up to "T" you can get 3 books together at Barnes and Noble I believe (ie A is for alibi, B is for Burgler, and C is for... )

I believe while you are on vacation, the fun light hearted books are a quicker read - at least for me!! I enjoy the Regency era Romance genre - it helps pass the time, without engaging my mind!! but I can read them fast!

another fun light read mystery is Diane Mott Davidson series - her books main character is Goldy, and she's a caterer - so they include recipes!! At the beginning of the series she's divorced, but as the series progresses, she gets married...Catering to Nobody, Dying for Chocolate, Cereal Murders are the first 3 in this 14 book series...

Alot of people really enjoy Nora Roberts - and I do, but I like her series that appeal to me - 3 Fates I thought was a good read.. I like her Irish Trilogy, her "Born in" trilogy,(set in Ireland I believe) the 3 sister trilogy (about modern 'witches tho), I'm curious about the new series she has started with Blood Brothers, it looks to be interesting! She also writes as J D Robb, mysteries -- but I havent started that series yet (cant find the first one!)

Nora Roberts Blood Brothers 1st book was fantastic. I can't wait for the next one. I usually like waiting for the whole series to come out before I start it because I can't stand the wait.

The J D Robb books take place in the future. I haven't decided if I would like them or not. I love Nora Roberts though.

I am a huge Sue Grafton fan but I certainly do not consider her series "light hearted" at least not her newest one - "T is for Trespass". Its about elder abuse and it was so disturbing to read that I skipped to the end.

I do agree about Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series and can recommend them for something easy and entertaining.

Jennifer Crusie's books always make me laugh. I can ready any of her books over and over again.

I forgot about her - her books are a fun read. I've also listened to some of them and so far the readers have been good.

Have you read Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series?
I think they fit your description pretty good and I breezed right thru them and couldn't wait to get to the next book.

Perfect easy read books. She even throws a mention of Disney in every now and then. Start with One-she's up to 13 now.
Fern Michaels is also a good author for easy to read books.
Debbie Macomber "A Good Yarn" easy fun books as well. I read all of her Christmas books this season! She was just recommended to me, so I hadn't read any of them yet. There must have been 12...kept me in reading material through the entire holiday season.

A few others...

Tamar Meyer's "Pennsylvania Dutch Mysteries with Recipes". Wonderful, light-hearted fun mysteries. Magdalena Yoder, the heroine, is the owner of an inn in Amish country. She's somewhat cantankerous, a little crusty, and very lovable. And yes, there really are recipes included! First in the series is "Too Many Crooks Spoil the Broth".

Elizabeth Peter's "Amelia Peabody" series. Fantastic reads, mysteries set in and around archaeological/Egyptological sites in Victorian times. Amelia is a very no-nonsense lady, proper and well-spoken, but quite willing to bash the baddie over the head with her parasol. The first book is "Curse of the Pharoahs". It is NOT the best book of the series, it was written in the 70's and meant to be a stand-alone; but the popularity took off and now there are like 15 of them. You have to read the first one to "get" the characters and plots, but the rest of the books are SO worth it!

I LOVE Jennifer Crusie's Books!! They are wonderful.

Someone mentioned Something Borrowed and Something Blue. Both were VERY good, in my opinion. I loved the characters and it was a quick and easy read. They're more chick lit if that's what you wanted.

Thanks everyone....I have a list of ideas given and I am off to the bookstore!!! You guys rock!!!:yay:

I also love the Outlander series and have the hardcovers for me only. If I come across the first book at a yard sale, I pick it up to "loan" out because I never get them back.

To the OP, if DH and I were going away for a long weekend I would NOT be concerned with my reading material, LOL!:rotfl: :rotfl: We once went 5 years without an overnight alone. It has now been 3 years since we have had a weekend away.:sad2:

Hope you have a wonderful time and happy reading.;)

LOL!!! :lmao: :rotfl: I need reading material for the airplane - long flight! My DH reads or sleeps on the plane. Don't plan on joining any mile high clubs, but I won't be reading while we are there!!!:lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Thanks again everyone!!!

So...?? What did you get at the bookstore?

I read a really neat series of books with recipes throughout. I think a man wrote them. Chocolate Chip Murder, Strawberry Shortcake, BlueBerry Muffins, etc. Really good recipes in them as well. I can't for the life of me remember the author.
