Has anyone had this problem: I've been having pain in the back of my neck, just barely to the right of the spine. It's mostly an achy pain, and sometimes there is a sharp pain that whips through it, and then the sharp pain is gone

I haven't had any injuries of any kind that would explain the pain.

It's there all day long, but at night when I lay down to go to sleep, and during the night, it doesn't hurt.

I've been to the doctor, he gave me a prescription for a muscle relaxer, and also an anti-inflamation medication (neither medication seems to make any difference at all). He sent me to have x-rays, and I'm going back to the dr. office later today to find out the results of the x-rays.

Can anyone shed any light on what might be going on???

Could be many different things. Could be a disc or nerve or muscular related. Could be a combination of things too. See where you're at after they read your x-rays. Just so you know x-rays don't tel the whole story either sometimes an MRI or CT-Scan is needed.

How about ice or heat, either help? Did you give the anti-inflammatory a good chance to work?

Ice makes it feel a bit better.

I've been on the anti-inflammatory medicine for about 2 weeks.

Thanks for your reply.

Wondering how you made out with the x-rays, and if you are feeling any better? :)

I had a pain in the same area that dragged on a long time. Eventually the doctor did a cortisone injection. It took a couple of day of ice and massage after that, and thankfully probably a year since the injection it is still okay.

Thanks for asking.....yes, I went back to the doctor a couple days ago and he gave me the results of the x-rays. It showed that I have arthritus in the neck area of the spine. His office scheduled me to have physical therapy, 3 times a week for 4 weeks, and I start that next week. He said he didn't see any reason to do an MRI because he did not think it would give him any more information than we have right now.

He also prescribed Prednizone. I believe it's a type of steroid that reduces inflammation. I started on it yesterday, and cannot believe how much better I felt even yesterday evening, less than 24-hours after I began the medication. But I'm only on the Prednizone for 12 days. So we'll see what happens after the Prednizone is gone, and after some therapy.

That was nice of you to ask how I was doing!!

I'm glad you are still feeling better!!

That pain I've had in the back of my neck, I've had off-and-on for probably one and a half years. I just never got around to going to the doctor about it until recently. But always before, I would have the pain for a week or two, and then it would go away for awhile.....then it would come back, etc. etc.
Guess I'm gettin' old!
