Does anyone know if the resorts have nebulizer's? My son rarely needs one (only used it twice this year) but if he gets a cold or sometimes something really sets off his allergies, we need to use it. I always take it with us on vacation, but it is pretty heavy and expensive to fly with. Anyone know if they have these for 'just in case' situations? We have our own medicing and tubing....any advice would be great.

I'd like to know too. My trio are the same. As soon as they get colds or their asthma flares up (especially in the winter months), they have to use it at least 3 times a day. If the resorts don't have one, then I'll just have to pack one or two to take with us. Good question!

I hate to say it but the resorts do not have these anywhere, you'll have to bring your own. On our Sept. trip we flew into MCO and 3 hrs after landing we had to take DD age 2 at the time turned 3 June 20th, was taken by Reddy Creek (Disney EMT service) to Celebrations Hospital for an Asthma attack. When this all happened we didn't even know she had asthma. We knew she has a fatal peanut allergy and don't know if the left over peanut dust in the duct work on the plane set the asthma off or not. (We had them remove the peanuts for our flight, but there could have been peanut dust in the ventalition) Anyhow, she was put on orapred (oral prednisone) and also a nebulizer for the week to help her feel better. The resorts didn't have any to use and not something they ever have, per Disney Management. Thank God my best friend works at AKL and her boyfriend lives in FL also, and someone in his family had a nebulizer we could use for the week. So our trip in Dec. we will be flying with our nebulizer. Anyhow, sorry for the long post, but I learned from a bad experience. I will say though with her being rushed to the ER via ambulance Disney was wonderful getting her there!

I'm so glad she was ok! Thanks for the information. I'll be packing 2 of them for our trip (if all 3 get sick, I can't make it on one nebulizer alone).

We bought a really nice sized nebulizer for travel for around $50 - it is made by Omron and I think it is called the Compair. So much better for packing than a full-sized nebulizer - especially for "just in case" We love the size and use it at home too.

We always bring our also for our daughter. She only needs it also if she gets a cold then she starts coughing really bad. Question for all of you. I just called Apria (where our Nebulizer is from) because the machine all of sudden kept popping the top off of the tube. They told me that our Neb was 2 years old and that they recommend they be replaced every 6 months. Has anyone else heard of this or is this just some way for them to get more money. Also, does anyone know where to get a carrying case for these. Thanks.

DS#2 uses a nebulizer quite frequently. You do not need to replace the neb. machine every 6 months. The machine should last for a long time. The Tubing on the other hand, needs to be replaced frequently. It may be the tubing that Apeia (where our neb. comes from also) that they were referring to.

On the same note, not all tubing fits every nebulizer the same. You need to make sure they are compatiable. We also have a smaller nebulizer that is batteried operated that we can carry with us if need be. You might want to check into purchasing that. Also, pharmacies frequently rent nebs. You may be able to rent one for the week.

As for the carrying case, my son has had severe respitory problems since a newborn. I keep all our stuff in the free diaper bag from Similac that we got in the hospital when he was born. It works wonderfully.

My husband also thought we should just need more tubing, but they are sending us out a whole new unit. (should get it today). Insurance pays for most of it anyway - I think we paid $30 for the last one. I will have to look into the portable ones . Did you get that from Apria also and does it use the medicine the same way? Thanks for the info.

It has it's own carrying case (hard green case w/ "mesh pouch" to hold Rx ampules. It is called OMRON NE-U22. It is a Mesh type neb. It runs on AA batteries. It has a mouth piece and can be used with a mask. The mist that comes out of the machine is finer than that with the big machine.

I LOVE IT! It has kept me out of the ER a # of times @ WDW. I use it before we hit any park when the humidity is high. I especially use it 2 x's or more in AK.

I still have my B I G machine but only use it when I am really sick & just want to lie down with the mask.

I have used Albuteral & Xopenex in it with NO problems.

I ordered mine on line & actually found a local distributor nearby when the mesh cap had to be replaced.

It is easy to clean too. I buy a qt of white vinegar on our grocery stop. I use 1 part white vinegar & 2 parts hot water. I soak the mouthpiece, mesh cap, medicine cup and clear plastic case cover in the solution for 20 minutes or so, then rinse with hot water and air dry on a plate. We usually stay at our timeshare and we have dishes available. PM me if you have any other ???

Understandably bringing your nebulizer with would be a pain, but needed. Your only other option that I can figure is that you could contact you DR. and
see if your Neb medication is available in the form of an inhaler. You could then take enough of those with easily.
I was really amazed to hear that the park EMT's took the pt to the hospital,
this tells me that either their protocols called for that, or that the EMT's are
not Paramedic's. A paramedic can adminsiter a nebulizer treatment. :confused3

Thanks for the info. I will have to look into that. Would be nice not to have the lug the big one down with us. What timeshare do you have? Looking at renting points and can't decide between BCV and BWV. Although, it is getting down to the 7 month window and not sure if any will even be available.

We own at Horizons by Marriott, Orlando. DH wants to buy DVC :sad2: but we just had to buy a car as our car's engine blew up & cost more to repair it than it was worth ~ it was 10 yrs old & had 110+ miles on it.

You are welcome for the info. You will need a Rx to order any new neb machine. I have heard that it can also be purchased from Costco. It is a bit pricey but well worth it to me! You can also purchase an adapter for it for the time you are in the hotel or t/s.

I have seen a link posted where you can rent a nebulizer in Orlando and they bring it to your hotel but I didn't save the info. If you are interested perhaps ask on the disabilities board here?

My 3 yr old also has asthma but he has recently been able to start using an inhaler. I think if your child is likely to need one it is best to get one of those little travel ones.

As for tranporting to hospital - perhaps the child's oxygen levels were low enough to need hospital treatment - and with the chance that it was peanut related (my son is allergic to peanuts too!) they aren't likely to take a chance of just giving a neb and leaving them at the hotel.

Good luck!

Maloy, all in park and shift Reedy Creek Fire units are ALS (though I dunno about the engines). There are EMTs, but still at leat a medic on each unti Im pretty sure. dlrhine sais they didnt even know she had asthma when the bout of anaphylaxis caused this, so Im guessing their didnt wanna even suggest a ROR/AMA release. It may be different by area, but I know I would want to take the kid to celebration. If it was an adult, or even a ped that was a frequent asthma patient with a known origin I would probably have given combivent or albuterol (wish we had xopenex on units around here, I like it better) and released.

Anywhooback tot he topic at hand. I would think its a liability to have nebs on site if they dont have a pharmacist to verifty script etc. The portable units are something good to look into if you travel. There are silent ones that work by ultrasonic difussion instead of a compressor (kinda like the misters in effects displays). They nebulize a traatment quicker, they dont make a sound, they run off battery, and can fit in a pocket. DO a search for ultrasonic nebulizer and you will find a bunch. They are a bit more pricey but your insurance company may cover a decent chunk, especially if you order thru them.

Have a wonderful trip and I hope you have to lug that thing around for nothing.

Wuv Tigger - it must be contagious. My car's engine just blew up up afew weeks ago. 6 year old Camry with 80,000 miles and of course 2 months past the extended warranty we bought. My boss's truck's engine blew up on Friday. What is going on here!!!! (Sorry to get OT)

Thanks so much for the info...our nebulizer isn't huge...but it is heavy. I'm going to check out the one by OMRON because we do like to travel with the children..even for just long weekends. :flower:

We have a sportsneb which is pretty small. I have packed it both times in my carry one when we went to WDW. Last time we ended up using it so I was so glad I packed it. I would definitely look into buying a travel size nebulizer

If you need specific medical equipment, you need to rent it from one of the local medical supply companies. The resorts only have some basic things like bed rails and simple bath benches.
This company rents respiratory equipment:
Care Medical
You can also check with your current supplier and see if they have a branch in that area, but some only sell equipment, not rent it.

You could also try calling the WDW Special Needs number at 407-939-7807 (TTY: 407-939-7670) to see if they have any other suggestions.
