NBC celebrates Black History month....

No, I don't think personal life experience is amazing...it just is. All African Americans don't feel the same way.

And I believe I said the AA's who were there THAT day. Did you miss that part?

I have not read all the posts.........

However, I did see the original story about the NBC menu. Funny enough, at the Federal Building in Fort Worth, an organization inviting people to celebrate Black History Month at an event have almost the exact same menu. No one has voiced any opposition or problemm with it.

Indeed, when I saw it this morning, I thought it must be a 'joke' based on the NBC controversy; yet it was real. I would not have given the menu a second thought save for the so-called controversy.

I'm wondering, if there was no offense somewhere, why was it on the news?? and why was the menu taken down?:confused3

Because Questlove (drummer for the Roots, the band on Jimmy Fallon's show) took a twitpic of the menu and posted it to twitter with the caption "hmm HR?" or something like that. A bunch of people on twitter got all riled up and agreed with Questlove, saying it was racist and NBC should be ashamed, blah blah blah.

So NBC took it down as it seemed to offend some people. Questlove now says that he was joking.

Hey guys, did you also know the the tradition among Black folks is that you make a pot of Black eyed peas on New years day. Legend is that it will bring wealth to your house hold.

So maybe we can get the recession over with if every body stirs up a pot. ;)

You should have said something before New Years. :( Now it's too late. Of course, we could try it on Chinese New Years. . . but that's sure to offend somebody. :scratchin

I don't personally eat that food, but most Southerners do. It's more of a regional thing than a Black thing.

I don't think she was wrong. If her life experience is similar to mine [I live in the NE], many African Americans have and still do become offended when fried chicken etc etc is attributed to them as their specific cuisine. Those foods have been used in many a racist joke, and some people are still sensitive, as the jokes are still out there. Hope this explains it for you.

That's because both of you are from above the Mason Dixon Line. Traditional "Black" culture was different above the line than from the South.

Actually a lot is much, much better than it used to be, at least in our school. The meatloaf . . .

I always get scared when I see meatloaf on cafeteria menus. Nothing like "mystery meat." :scared1:

I'm a southern gal who could never get the hang of cooking greens.... to let you in on something I learned... if you can find them, Glory Brand collard greens are good (if canned can be good).

Frankly, everything that was on that menu is something almost all southerners eat, as a rule.

Those are good if you doctor them up a bit.

The trick to unbelievably good collard greens is (unfortunately for your arteries) bacon grease. :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 or ham hocks

I'll bring the greens, I'm make some serious greens.

We always have black eyed peas and collard greens on New Years. (both of my parents are from South Carolina)

Wonderful. Remind me when is white history month... when they celebrate eating burgers and apple pie?

July 4th. When the whites declared their freedom from the other whites.
