Debt Dumpers 2026

Thanks. I will check into that. Tomorrow, I'm planning on getting the mower ready for the season. I've had that mower 3 years (my boss gave it to me when we moved up here to DFW). In 3 years, I haven't sharpened the blade, and I haven't changed the oil, air filter or spark plugs. I'm going to be doing all of that tomorrow as I watched a Youtube video on how to do it today. I've never been taught how to work on engines, so I had no idea. I've always just taken it somewhere to get it done.
Hoping it goes smoothly! DH watched some videos during Covid and has been maintaining all our small motor items (lawnmower, snowblower, and tiller)

I watched a video a few years ago and fixed our freezer. It’s amazing how much information is out there!

When my husband has tried to change the oil on our rider mower he manages to spill oil all over the driveway. So we now pay the guy across the street to do anything we need done (he runs it as a business out of his house). He doesn’t charge much and it saves us a lot of time and mess.

One of the reasons we got battery operated stuff was due to maintenance no winterizing or mixing oils or having trouble starting it, been there done that as a kid and it was annoying. Sharpening blades aside we just charge the battery and pop it in. We have a snowblower, lawn mower, leaf blower (backpack version) and trimmer/edger all battery operated by EGO. When my husband was on field assignments throughout the years (he was gone around 22 months total between several years) this was very important for me to have since I was doing all the stuff on my own.

But youtube is amazing for the information. We've used it to change my radiator out on my car, replace the valve cover gasket, find the extremely hard to even know existed bolt holding something or rather down for my car. My husband has changed his brake pads with a video, we've learned various woodworking and home fixes from just watching videos including the dryer and many more. Funny enough my husband also has a saved video for ties because he only wears them for certain occasions; he also learned folding his pocket square technique which he proudly has shown off when we've been on cruises or weddings. We've both learned sewing techniques (it's been many years since we did home ec classes from school) me for random fixes my husband mostly for taking in the sides of the dress shirts he wears since he is tall but not big making it harder to find shirts that fit him.

I was thinking you were a CA native and I was hoping you would have some insight! I'm going to work my way down your reply...

We had originally thought we would stay at the Best Western immediately across from the entrance from DL, for that wonderful proximity. But the more I dig around, you are definitely paying dearly for that location. So now I've been all over the place on my thoughts. We opened the new Disney Inspire CC for the benefits, especially once we booked this, and I'm kinda considering the Disney Pixar Place hotel because after the credit back from the CC, it's truly not much more than the Best Western! So I keep looking at pricing and such but haven't booked anything yet. If not onsite, now thinking further away than the Best Western, for some additional cost savings.

Do you have any recommendations on a beach closer to Disney than 1000 Step? I can be negotiated on the beach; that one just looked really pretty! But the fact that we do arrive later in the afternoon and it being farther, is a deterrent. I am checking rental prices for cars, mainly with Autoslash; it seems I'd have to do an overnight rental and return it by mid afternoon the next day if I went that route, as I can't find any rentals nearby that allow a key drop after hours.
We tend to go to Huntington when we go to the beach while in SoCal. Is it the prettiest? Not really, but its close to being a straight shot from the Anaheim area to the beach, you can usually find cheap street parking if going during the week, and theres also a little shopping center right down the road from it where we usually grab sandwiches and take em to eat on the beach.

Newport beach is probably prettier than Huntington, but we don't usually go over there. I'm not trying to dissuade you from your beach choice at all! Im less familiar with the beaches down there than I am with Anaheim/disneyland.

We got all battery powered things also and man do it love it. I charge up 2 and can knock out the whole yard with my self propelled mower in a little over an hour. We've had it 3 years now and it's still going strong!
Ours is from 2014 sadly at that time EGO hadn't done a self-propelled model until the following year or so but it's much more easy to operate than a non-battery operated one. Prior to this we had a different and smaller battery operated lawn mower and I'm glad to be rid of that one, it worked for the rental house we had prior to us building our house so it did its job.

After the initial purchase of the lawn mower back then the only thing we've done is buy a new battery, one of our other battery operated things came with a fast charger so now we have two chargers.

Mildly looking into our big trip next year for DD's 10th birthday and she's dead set on WDW, soooo guess that's where we are headed.

I'm trying with several ideas:
• rental house/condo
• staying on site with a package
• renting DVC points to stay on site in a better room.

I kind of really like the idea of renting DVC, but have never done it. It seems you can get a great room for a pretty good deal. I just worry about sending someone money I don't know to book thru them. I know there are several companies I can go thru, but it just makes me slightly nervous.

We have rented points many, many times. I've also handled renting for my sister in law and booked 2 trips for my niece who takes care of my dad. At least 10+ times now. The first time I was terrified. I talked to him on the phone for probably a half hour. Another time talked to his wife. He was a math teacher from upstate NY and also gave me password tips for my job which requires us to change pw every 3-4 months and they can't repeat. :headache:
After several times renting, I calmed down a lot. Some owners were in the UK or Costa Rica. It all worked out fine. Some use a contract and some don't.
I just paid the final balance due for my niece's and her family to go in May. This particular Member is an attorney so we definitely have a contract.

Honestly, for a short pre-cruise stay of 1 night, I have texted the DVC Member while in the bathroom peeing at work and the deal is done that fast. :rotfl2: They email me confirmation, I put it in MDE account and confirm all of our names. Then later that night I PayPal or zelle them, depending on their payment terms.
You could also use a broker like David's but you'll pay more per point.

For the May stay, I'm paying $19 per point which is pretty good. That's for a split stay: 3 nts at BWV then 4 nts at BCV. We later moved her flight up from late night arrival and crashing at hotel near MCO to very early that morning so we added a night at AKV. That was a much later change and I couldn't get BWV. She wants to be there for SW Day. :crowded::crazy:
Anyway, it doesn't make it a cheap stay but it's definitely cheaper than booking those same accommodations directly through Disney. Sometimes we splurge on a 1 or 2 BR which has a full kitchen and W/D in each unit and just so much space with all the closeness of being onsite. Those have a king size bed in your own room with a door that locks which is so nice for mommies & daddies. ;)

Also, you can still book the dining plan through the DVC Member regardless of where you buy your tickets. Most Members have APs so they don't need to book as a package to be able to buy the DP.

It's way past my bedtime but DM me if you want more details. :goodvibes

when our kids were younger we did it all 3 ways (well, we owned dvc at the time so not the point rental aspect but in 2 b/r dvc). my take on it just from a purely lodging standpoint-

the 2 b/r dvc is great if you want more space and to avail yourself of the full kitchen (and now with the ability to do curb-side grocery orders so you can do fast/easy grocery pickup vs. back in the day when we would do a transport that bundled in just 30 minutes for a grocery stop on the way from the airport and you had to do a mad dash in an unfamiliar store has to make it even better). we saved $$$ by getting breakfast stuff, snack stuff and a few items like the big family size frozen lasagnas to have some low key relaxing nights). I loved having the washer/dryer (I took laundry tabs) so we didn't have to pack as much and stuff was clean when we departed. the downside was we were on property so the kids wanted to go out and about when we would have enjoyed some downtime (since I don't think they don't allow pool hopping anymore this might not be as big an issue).

the rental-we did a rental condo (I think I found something through trip advisor). it worked really well. more space than the 2 b/r AND it had a lanai WITH a pool so we COULD have downtime by kicking back in our comfies watching the kiddos in the pool (also nice to have the hot tub to ourselves to relax in when the kids went to sleep). I will say that w/a rental of more than a few days it's vital to bring-extra toilet paper, a couple of rolls of paper towels and a handful of garbage bags b/c you are given the bare minimum. we did a grocery stop as well but b/c we were off property we also had options of lower cost prepared foods so the kids got to have more 'treat' (restaurant) food that they enjoyed getting to go and enjoying back at the rental while watching movies.

when my kids got old enough to roam the parks/properties on their own staying on site was perferable, when they were younger I liked off site b/c it kind of, trying to figure out how to put it❓❓❓................put an end to each day. as we left wdw property there was nothing that seemed to lure them out-no lobby to ask if they could just 'walk around', no resort pool 'for just one more swim', no gift shops/soda despensers/24-7 Disney music. it was like 'ok we are done for the day, let's get some rest and we can be ready for what we have planned tomorrow'.

We have done the pool houses when they were little too. (Windsor Palms, Rolling Hills, Indian Creek) It was nice to have all that space and some even had the garage converted to a game room: air hockey, pool table, ping pong, or foosball, etc. If you're going to rent a car anyway, you might as well do a real grocery shopping. This was before DME was ever a thing. Sometimes we couldn't get the kids out of the pool to go to the parks. Windsor Hills was just starting to be built and it was only 3 miles to get to Disney property, entering from Sherberth Rd which leads in near AKL.

As time went on, our older ds asked what all the buses are for and why don't we ride them. So we started trying different Disney resorts. That worked well because dh was getting tired of being around crowds and would sometimes want to return to the room before I was ready to be done. So being onsite makes it easier to split up.

Then we started renting points which makes the deluxes cost more like a moderate so we tried WL, BCV, BWI and Poly and it was all over. We couldn't go back to being so far away and dh has become a bit of a hotel snob.

Even from our first visit when we were dating and I surprised him with a trip to WDW and booked the Quality Inn on International Dr. He said the difference between a mediocre vacation and a WOW vacation is only a few hundred bucks, so make it a wow trip. This was in the early 90s so adjusting for inflation probably would be more than a few hundred bucks nowadays. lol.

Anyway, there are so many ways to do Disney. They offer something for all tastes and budgets.

We've done off site homes the last two times we have gone. We always drive, so hitting the store is always our first stop after getting to the house. The fact that everyone gets their own beds, we have room to spread out and relax, and usually a pool are big factors to the positive.

We've never stayed on property and it's something I'm definitely struggling with because we'll do a bulk of the trip at Disney, but she also wants to do a few days at Universal. So if we stayed on site, we'd likely split the trip and stay at Disney for the first half and move to the Universal hotel for that half of the trip.

DH doesn't have the best knees anymore and while we do plan a mid-day break as a family, if me and the older kiddos want to go back out, but him and the youngest want to stay at the hotel a while longer, it would be so much easier to meet back up for dinner if we're on property and can use their transportation vs me having to drive to and from everywhere.

I'm just so torn on price vs. convenience vs. space.

As I get older, I'm willing to pay more for convenience. If your budget is flexible, I'd suggest onsite. Ease of transportation between parks and back to hotel (especially if you're doing a midday break) is wonderful. I also suggest it for this trip since it's celebrating the big 1-0 :bday:
I'd highly recommend renting DVC points - stay Deluxe with a big savings.

Was throwing out plans and ideas at DH (he is the "I'm just the driver" and hates doing the planning) and he said "book onsite, then we don't have to deal with driving once there or food because we'll just do the dining plan or you'll stress about cost". He knows me so well. 😂

So I guess I'm going to look at renting DVC. I guess I need to figure out how that works lol.

We have rented DVC through a rental agency a couple of times. It’s pretty easy through a broker. I haven’t had the guts to do it through a private person yet.

Keep in mind, the savings are compared to what you would pay for the same room if you booked via Disney. We’ve always booked 1 or 2 bedroom villas and found it’s still pretty expensive.

If you are looking to stay at a studio villa the savings will work if you compare the price to a deluxe hotel room. It may or may not be comparable to a moderate room, especially if there is a room discount.

I highly recommend staying onsite at universal. our last Orlando trip was dedicated to universal (everyone wanted it vs. Disney-kind of burned out on it). I was mentally ready to spend the same high costs for lodging as we do at wdw so I was VERY surprised at the much more reasonable rates we found the rooms very spacious and the vibe lower-key so more more relaxed. I love the boats you can transport in and we took advantage of pool hopping. we did NOT do a full bore kitchen type room (did a suite with a second bedroom attached) but the little mini kitchen w/fridge and microwave (actually 2 b/c there was another of each in the attached room) worked fine.

*End of February Update*

2026 Financial Goals:
  • Get home equity loan down to $15k (which means paying about $500 a month) - Paid $500 in February.
  • Pay off my new wedding ring and treadmill purchase - needs to be done by April (Roughly $1800) - This has now been paid off!
  • Add $4k to our emergency savings to hit 6 month goal (Will need to add $700 to my auto contributions to hit $4k) - Only added auto contributions so far.
2026 Personal Goals:
  • Exercise - use the treadmill at least 20 times a month. (I'm hoping setting a monthly goal will work better for me than a weekly goal.) - I think I managed 20 days in February. I'll have to double check that number when I get home. With it being a shorter month by a few days, dealing with some weather/allergy headaches, and just being a little busier I didn't exercise as many days as I wanted.
  • Donate monthly to my favorite cat charity/shelter (Aiming for $50-100/mo. This could technically be a financial goal also, but i'm choosing to put it as a personal goal.) - Donated $50 in February
  • Replace patio cover - Have not purchased this yet and instead we may end up going the pricier route of having someone do it for us. We re-measured our space and the couple different options I found won't work. We think this is because our house is older and the space our current one is in is not to the same specs as what's the norm today. So this is still TBD.
  • Finish creating bar top out of old fence posts - We've cut down our old posts to size, but we need to add one more post and I had to order some more braces/brackets that should be here tomorrow. I'm hoping to work more on this this weekend, but i'm heading out of town for work and won't be back till late Saturday, so we'll see if i'm feeling up to it on Sunday. Hoping the hubby will be able to grab our boards for a tabletop while i'm gone.
  • Buy a grill gazebo - I think we've decided on buying a louvred pergola, just need to hit "buy" on it.
  • Take weekend/long weekend trips to at least 3 new places (My DH has really crappy time off with this job he started, so i'm aiming for weekend getaways to keep my sanity.) - We opted to not go anywhere for the long weekend in February. But we will be trying out an all inclusive in Cabo in June. I'm counting this one as a new place since we've never been to Cabo for longer than a few hours on a cruise.
I still need to submit our taxes. We owe about $100 to the state and getting back about $200 from federal, so not as bad as I was fearing. We've changed my DH's W4 at his job so hopefully we won't have this issue of owing next year. Somehow his form got super messed up and we don't know if that was my fault, his fault, or the company, but it is what it is.

With the time change this weekend and the long rang weather forecast showing 70s and 80s till the middle of March, i'm hoping we can get the bar top finished in the next week or 2. Once that's done we need to get some crushed rock to put under the turf we laid because we have a bunch of uneven spots and our chairs like to sink in to the ground as of right now. Since we finished this project so late last year we just figured we'd worry about it this year.

I also mentioned I got a new credit card for the 0% intro period of 15 months. Hoping to have all of our yard purchases paid off within that time frame. If things go wonky and it won't be paid off we'll probably do a 0% balance transfer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed my DH can find a better paying job this year and something that he actually wants to do! While he doesn't necessarily mind this current job, it's definitely not what he was expecting or wanting.

Happy March yall!

February update and March Goals:

Financial

Done:
Paid off the 0% credit card in Feb!
  1. Pay down/off the BIG credit card. This one is our main card and it's...hard. Paying it down looks great on paper, but then it never quite works out that way. But now we can focus on this.
  2. Stop eating out. Doing pretty good with this! Do we still eat out? Yes. But we do it a LOT less! I'm also on a liquid diet for the next two days due to Mysterious Illness and my husband is getting a colonoscopy on Wednesday so at least for the first part of this week we're not in danger of eating out.

Health, Fitness & Self Care
  1. Still on Zepbound. Still hate it, but am losing. More since I have this Mysterious Stomach Illness. I don't recommend the latter for weight loss though.
  2. Cook more at home. We're doing pretty well with this so long as we go to the grocery store on Sundays--going to the store is the real dealbreaker with this. But planning menus with the kids is pretty fun!
  3. It is still TOO COLD TO DO ANYTHING! There's no walking anywhere but inside since there's SO MUCH SNOW. Hoping this starts changing at the end of the month.

Home/Projects

Done:
Got a plumber! So 2 out of 4 issues (the most pressing ones) are fixed. $750 but yay!
  1. Still need to do the board and batten thing, but I bought the wood! And the nailgun I'm afraid of! I'm working myself up to it.
  2. Replace/fix screens on the windows. I can probably do this myself. Maybe.
  3. Replace the rotted board under the sink. Or just remove it and put a mat down.
