Navigator App and texting?

Can somebody explain the Navigator App and how the texting feature works.

We are sailing on Magic in May. How do you text with accumulating international data rates? Is it possible to use my I-phone for clock and pictures and text without data charges. I dont want to come home to a HUGE bill.

You text within the app. You don't use YOUR texting app. And it's between devices using the Navigator app. This only uses the free wifi. You cannot communicate with anyone off the ship.

Pictures and actual iphone texts are going to have to use the paid wifi, not the free wifi that the Navigator app uses.

So if everyone in my party downloads the Navigator App and we can communicate with each other this way.
Thank you bumbershoot, I had read that you use this frequently and was hoping you could answer. I am a semi - "old person".... the kids have to help me with my phone.... kinda like DH and I helped his parents with the cable TV and the answering machine.... except now its me :(

Also, your iphone can be used for photos with no problem. The alarm clock probably will work too, except for the change in time zones, so you will probably want to rely on a secondary method there. Just make sure your navigator app is logged on - it populates a lot of additional stuff once you are aboard the ship (and perhaps in the terminal). Then just make sure to put your iphone in airplane mode before the ship begins to move, and voila - it works perfectly, and you can take photos all day long.

Regarding the time zone change you need to go into your settings and change from time set automatically to set clock manually and change the time. Then you can use your alarm with no problem.

Just a note that the Navigator app will not update and its internal texting features will not work if you keep the phone in full airplane mode. You will need to put it in airplane mode but the turn WiFi on separately for the Navigator app to work as described in this thread.

We used the app on our cruise a couple of weeks ago. The delivery of text messages was a bit delayed in delivery, sometimes 10 minutes for us.

I found that I was only notified of new text messages if I left the app open on my iPhone - so I could still lock the screen but if I exited out of the app, the messages would only update once I opened the app again. Not sure if they have changed this since I last cruise in October.

We used this to know where our son was (usually in Vibe). We only had trouble on CC. He needed us to sign something and the CMs told him to tell me to meet him at Cookies...I hustled to Cookies and then after the monsoons started he texted that they just told him they were actually in Cookies Too. If the texts weren't delayed I probably would have been able to go there before the storm kicked in. Luckily the excursion was canceled due to the storms and the signature was not needed.

I found a dead spot for wifi at the start of the CC5k race. I texted my wife a few minutes before I took off. She didn't get the message until I got back to the start line. Don't know if user error or not.

Our cabin (6572 on Fantasy) was a dead spot for both WiFi (for which I had paid) and Verizon 4G (for which I had bought an international package). I found this highly annoying, But when I did have a signal elsewhere on the ship I did not have to have the app open on my Samsung S6 Edge to get the texts. They were very timely, which surprised me because I had heard that it was really slow. That was the whole reason I bought the international package--so DH and I could text one another.

I find the whole Wave Phone thing absurd. Who wants to carry an extra device? And there were zero instructions given to use it, nor any attempt to confirm whether we were actually using it. There was part of a message on it at one point mid week. Couldn't read the kid's name...but someone wanted to get picked up from the kids club. Maybe it was left over from the last cruise or maybe the kids club tried to reach us (the regular phone in our cabin didn't work, nor could we retrieve voice mail messages that it said that we had). I have no idea. But it did then dawn on me that the kids club never asked us how to get a hold of us if they ever need us. Odd.

Ok. I was playing around with my phone. Put it in airplane mode but turned the wi-fi on. And what scares me is that I could still access Facebook and regular Text, YOU TUBE, gkids games. I dont want to pay for a wi-fi package on the ship. I just wanted to take pictures and communicate. I dont want to come home with a 5,000 phone bill.

So it seems simple enough but Im still not getting how I am going to use the Navigator App without accessing other features on my phone that will cost me a fortune. Also, one of the things I enjoy about crusing is I get to talk to peoples faces and not the tops of their heads because they are on their phone.

Maybe Im just a little slow and just dont understand the technology or maybe it will make more sense once we are on board. Thanks for all the hints.

I don't think the Navigator app works on CC (the Wave phone does though). You might still be able to connect to the ship's wifi if you're very close to the ship. Would this explain your issues?

It does work on the island, because I was able to message my wife at the conclusion of the race right before I did pelican plunge and she was still on the ship. Then again on the way back to the ship to meet up with her.

Were you connected to your home wifi at the time that you did this? That would be why. iPhone messages also go through wifi. If you are in airplane mode your phone will not connect to cell towers. The navigator app works through a wireless network on the ship that will not allow you to connect to the Internet unless you pay ahead of time for it.

If you are incredibly nervous you can also go into your phone settings and turn off "cellular data" but honestly that just a redundant step.

When you are onboard, you have to pay for a wifi package to access anything other than the Navigator services. So even if you are connected to wifi, services like Facebook, YouTube, etc simply will not work unless you have paid for access. So you don't have to worry about getting a bill. If you don't want to be able to access the Internet, dimply don't sign up for a package. All the DCL stuff will still work fine. :)

Although using the DCL Navigator app is all free, I wanted to add that they offer a special the first day on board of 50mb of free internet for the week. If you sign up by midnight. This worked well for me to check emails a few times and I had plenty left over. No need to buy any coverage. Of course, when I cruise I 'unplug" so don't need to check Facebook etc.

It worked for us when we had just gotten off the ship (apparently we were still within the ship's wifi range), but stopped working after we went through the security check point. We asked a CM and she said that only the Wave phones work on CC.

The website also says it doesn't work on CC.

It could be you happened to be near the ship or maybe it didn't actually send until you were near the ship? Or maybe something changed (I mean if they can have the Wave phones work, why not the app??). We sailed this past November on the Magic. Or could be some ships have a stronger wifi signal.

Many of us talk about the delay with texts. I talk about how we needed to fully open the app and go into the text part of the app, every single time, to make it alert us about a text.

Some have better luck, but it's best to assume you'll have to check often rather than to assume it will work magically.

Did you contact the internet people onboard to let them know you weren't getting service?

You bought the package so you could text each other? Like, using imessage or whatever? But you could have just texted each other for free, no package of any kind needed, with the Navigator app. I don't understand.

Wave phones are crazy, and that's why we love the app. I was able to use them on our first DCL cruise in early 2013. Apparently my memory was still holding onto *how to use that sort of phone* then, but by October of that same year I had lost the info. I haven't even been able to make a CALL successfully using those things since Feb 2013. And texting OMG. How did we survive in the later 90s/early 00s with that sort of nonsense?

Kids club will call your stateroom and the Wave phone.

We send DS to the kid's club with his no-SIM phone, with the app downloaded. When he wants to go (we have yet to give him free-range abilities) he texts us. We all know texts can be delayed, so we check often and he knows to be patient.

I was able to do the same thing from the same place on our first DCL cruise after the app made it to Dream. It got to DH who was leaving the ship at the time. I have not been able to use it successfully since.
