The YEKCIM family vacationed in the VA and NC mountains last week, and I had the good fortune to visit the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA. The town of Bedford was the home of Company A, 116th Infantry Regiment, which was decimated on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, D-Day. The memorial is dedicated to the memory of Allied soldiers who gave their lives on D-Day.

Freedom is not free, as the sacrifice of these men attests.

Ed...cool pics...where are you from? Bedford is where I teach, and I live about 30 minutes from there.

The D-day memorial is definitely something to experience...

Thank you all for the kind words.

We're in the Birmingham, AL area, and were staying at the Peaks of Otter Lodge for a few days. My only request to Mrs Y was that we visit the D-Day Memorial. It was a most meaningful stop for me, and I encourage anyone who is in the area to include it in their itinerary if at all possible.

We just had a WWII re-enactment in our area last week. They re-enacted D-Day on one of our local beaches. When I finish the photos, I will post a few. It was pretty amazing.

Well said and beautiful photos. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and pictures:thumbsup2

Ed,

Great pics! I would love to visit there someday.

Are any of these done with the Sigma macro? That is still on my short list and working it's way up to the top.

Thanks, Andy. No, the 150 was not part of my gear list at that particular venue. I used both cameras and and three lenses, the 18-135, 70-300vr, and the Sigma 10-20, which is the lens used on #3.

The 150 is a superb lens, although I did not use it all that much on this vacation (Mrs Y had it on her D200 a good portion of the time). Actually, the 18-135 / 70-300vr was a very good combination for the type shooting I was doing, so I really did not "need" to use it.

Beautiful photos Ed! Very moving and very appropriate with July 4 coming up.

Nice pictures and the subject matter is very moving!
I too think the composition on the second shot is a really neat perspective.

Thanks for including them all.

Very nice Ed!! You can get a sense through your pics that is a very moving and wonderfully done tribute to these brave men. Thanks so much for sharing.

Very beautiful and moving pictures. My family and I used to live in Roanoke. We had the good fortune of making a trip to the D-Day Memorial. I decided to not take my camera with me that day, but it is something I will never forget.

Thank you for sharing.
