So I am still pricing out a rental mini van for March Break. Last year we booked National and I liked it because I joined their club and just got to go to the MCO garage and pick up the van. No waiting in lines. I was hoping to book with them again.
I am finding that there is almost $200 in extra fees they are adding on. I am pretty sure I didn't have that much in fees last year. It says there is a "recovery fee" and a "florida surcharge fee" and taxes of course. Anyone else finding this?

All rental car companies charge taxes and fees on top of their base rates, and that's how it's been for decades.

I'm old enough to remember when, in most places, there was just the base rate plus whatever the local sales tax was. Then airports, states, cities, and other taxing agencies figured out that they could collect more money from renters, instead of raising taxes on local residents (local voters).

Now, in some places, the taxes and "fees" (essentially more taxes, but sometimes a way for a rental car company to break out a specific business cost) are almost as much as the base rental.

The good news it that rental car websites quote the total price, including taxes and fees. So just look at the bottom line.

I've never used national - usually only Budget or Enterprise. I find budget to be the cheapest if you have one in your area. Enterprise is always a good bet but a bit pricier. If you have a dollar rental car center, I'd also recommend that.

is there another company where you can just pick it up in the garage at the Orlando Airport like National does?

If you like National, try running your dates using the code found in this thread:

Signing up for the KLM Flying Blue program (which entitles you to the discount) is free, and if you are Emerald Club member, you will still get your free additional driver. We have a midsize SUV reserved using this discount for 15 days in August for $533 taxes included, and we can apply a coupon to it when one is released for our travel dates to bring the cost down even further.

If you rent from the Dolphin some of those fee's will be gone from your rental. A lot of the fee's are one that are charged because you are renting from a airport location.

The taxes and fees charged by National Car Rental are similar both places.

If the base rate from National is the same, a car rental at Orlando International Airport will cost $2.50 more per day than at WDW Dolphin.

The 10 percent Hotel Consession Fee and the 10 percent Airport Access Fee balance each other out. But the airport has a $2.50/day Customer Facility Charge.

Taxes and Fees: National Car Rental at WDW Dolphin
Florida Surcharge 2.00/day
Tire/battery Fee .02/day
Hotel Consession Fee 10 Pct
Vehicle License Fee .69/day
Sales Tax (6.50%)

Florida Surcharge 2.00/day
Tire/battery Fee .02/day
Airport Access Fee 10 Pct
Customer Facility Charge 2.50/day

Sales Tax (6.50%)

Ok just booked with National using the KLM code. I actually used it last year and had completely forgotten about it! Got a mini van for march break for $340. Just re-printed out a copy of my KLM "membership". I joined last January but never did receive an actual card in the mail. Thanks!!

I think all companies charge the same fees at the same location. The difference is the base price.
