Nasty incident leads to great problem - need advice!

Hi folks,
I have a really wonderful problem to have. The backstory is less wonderful- we returned from Disney last week, and one night after leaving the MK fireworks for Beach Club Villas where we were staying we witnessed a contract bus driver (not a Disney bus) being verbally abusive to a family with a special needs child. He was rude and demeaning, and tried to force the child’s family to seat them with my husband, a total stranger, so he could fill every seat, despite the fact that this child’s family was clear that it wasn’t something their child could handle. Meanwhile my ten year old would also have been seated with strangers, although that was less of an issue, we wouldn’t have been able to supervise them at all. There were plenty of empty seats at the front of the bus that the driver refused to allow us to fill.

The driver also refused to give his name or wear a mask. The man had absolutely no business driving anyone, much less at Disney! My husband was furious, and when we got off the bus he went to complain. There were at least three families in line- ours, the family with the child, and a third family who had boarded before us and had been forced to take their child out of a wheelchair to carry them to- you guessed it, the back of the bus to fill every seat!

Once the manager at the Beach Club heard our story he was quick to react and took down all the details, and made a call that hopefully got the jerk of a driver away from guests and the public.

Two days ago we received an email that Disney was comping us a return visit- ten free nights in a two bedroom villa at either Animal Kingdom Lodge, Boulder Ridge, Beach Club, Boardwalk Villas, or Bay Lake Tower. We’ll need to wait until after owners at those resorts book, of course, but assuming that all are available, which would you choose and why? We own at AKL and Hilton Head, and aside from those have only stayed at Beach Club, which… my kids didn’t love, surprisingly.

Due to schedules we need to travel in mid-late August next year. The party will be two adults and two early teen/tween children, although we might bring friends they won’t be able to commit until at least next March.

Short version: After an awful experience with a Disney contracted bus driver, we’re being comped a long stay and want advice on where to book.

To be clear, Disney acted promptly and I hope appropriately when they were told about the issue, but I hope they spend more time screening people who come into contact with their guests. I don’t know if the guy was fired, but I think he should have been. Compensation to the impacted families was generous.

I would stay at AKL or BLT... but amazing that you were comped this stay. I'm sorry you had such an awful experience with that bus driver.

If you love AKV, Boulder Ridge (aka Wilderness Lodge Villas) was designed by the same architect and is based on the grand National Park lodges of Roosevelt and Rockefeller eras. It has beautiful grounds, and is a nice boat ride to the Magic Kingdom. BRV is getting a full refurb in 2022, so if your trip is mid-year or later, you’ll likely have updated rooms, too! We own BRV and AKV and they’re our two favorite resorts.

My choices would be for these reasons
1. Boulder Ridge(we still refer to it as Villas at Wilderness Lodge) Near MK with a lovely boat ride, theming is over the top and best on property IMO, great place to relax after day in park, Geyser Pt is a great unwind
2. BLT, access to MK is tops with a 10-15 min walk, lots of amenities including restaurants, lounges
3. AKL, great theming
4. BWV, proximity to 2 parks, lots of eateries around

Wow! I hope that ****** got fired. What an awful person.

As to your question. BRV is scheduled for a full refurb and the rooms should be fresh, with the new wall-style sofa bed in the living room. The resort itself is beautiful and has a relaxing atmosphere. But transportation everywhere is by bus or boat.

BWV is an okay choice if you want to be able to walk to Epcot and HS. But the rooms have not been refreshed in a while and they have the old-style sofa beds. There are no dedicated 2BRs, so the 2nd BR is a studio with a sofa bed.

BLT is a great location for access to the MK and for monorail access to Epcot. Your dining options are plentiful at other resorts but there are no restaurants in BLT itself. Restaurants at CR are within easy walking distance. The pool isn't anything great and the contemporary theme is not to everyone's taste but it's not a bad choice for a 2BR.

Thank you! I’m happy about the stay but upset for the family with the special needs child- Disney is usually such a welcoming place for families that often struggle with vacations.

BRV was my first thought! I’m a little concerned about the way the dining space is configured, if we do invite another family. Do you have any feedback on that?

I don’t often wish for people to be fired, but… yeah… this guy should not be around the public.
We really love Jambo House, but we’re inclined to try something different. BRV seems to have the atmosphere, but there seems to be a decent chance for us to get a fireworks view at BLT, which we usually wouldn’t have the points for- certainly not for ten days! And the location seems great…
How easy (or tough) is it to get from BLT to Epcot?

Normally, I would pick BCV, but since you already mentioned that the kids didn't love it, I would move on to BLT or BRV.

Well… the dining situation at a dedicated 2BR at BRV isn’t great. Only two at the table and two at the bar, which is admittedly a little ridiculous for a villa that sleeps up to 8. I believe the 2BR lockoff has a larger dining area. However, as the refurb is a full refurb, it remains to be seen what the dining situation will look like once completed.

Wel, that’s an argument there for BLT, if they give you an MK view! You can get to Epcot by bus, or take the monorail to TT, then switch to the Epcot monorail.

Will they let you do a split stay??

Honestly, they're all great. However, since you own DVC and will have an opportunity to try them all out eventually, I would take the one that would cost the most points because for us, that would be the one that we would be least likely to stay in (we like to get the most bang for our buck). So that would be BLT MK view or AKL club level (there's only 5 so this would be very difficult to get but you are going at a slow DVC time so that helps).

My vote would be Boulder or BLT. Great locations. If you hadn't already done a Boardwalk area resort, I would have suggested that one. We own at Copper Creek and we just love the whole vibe of the place. As someone mentioned, Boulder does need a refurb and that is scheduled so you should be good to go for that!

Have to say I am dying to stay at BLT just to see how I like the easy access to MK and monorail.

One other thing to consider…the restroom situation at BLT
in a 2 bed there are 3 full baths which is awesome if you are in a pinch trying to get everyone out the door in a timely manner
I think the same is true at AKL too in a 2 bed but others may be able to chime in to verify

I was shocked that they didn’t love it! I think we’re narrowing it down to BRV or BLT.

So sorry to read this but glad to hear that Disney handled this the way they used too !!
my pick
Bay Lake - love this resort

I was shocked. We didn’t expect anything, much less this! What do you love about Bay Lake? Is it very vibrant, active, great proximity?

I didn’t think to ask, but that’s a great idea!

My husband said the same thing! If Jambo club level was available that would be incredibly tempting, but I doubt it will be. BLT MK view is tempting, but do you end up looking at mostly a parking lot, or are the fireworks so great that they overshadow everything?
