Napkins at WDW

Wow. Just wow. 15+ pages over a flimsy piece of paper that you wipe your mouth with and then throw away. I'm sure glad they never had Disney themed toilet paper. And DH thinks that I'm obsessed!

Im an extremely detail oriented person, and I find this thread amusing...since I had brought up the napkin issue to my husband a few years ago...several times...since they were changed at the restaurants from restaurant specific printed napkins, to generic. For some reason, that really bugged me, and I took notice immediately. For those of you who don't care, that's ok. But for me (and obviously others too), it just rubs me a little that the last of the napkins that at least had a logo on it are now gone. Its the little things that are disappearing, that will never come back, that make me a little sad. So its just a napkin, but the accumulation of eliminating all the little touches over time will make a big impact to those who have visited for years. Yes refurbs and the FLE is a great thing, but so are the little details that make the experience all the more magical for some of us!

That being said....I'm hoping that maybe Disney will at least sell higher quality disposable napkins that we can buy!! I would love to have Disney napkins available on my counter or for my kids lunches!! :):goodvibes
There are hundreds of Disney napkin designs out there for sale -- any party store worth its salt will have plenty to choose from.

:earsboy:

I am certainly not going to read 15 pages of replies on this thread, but I do find this topic very ironic!

DH and I were there the first week of May and had purchased the QS dining plan. On our final day, we used all of our remaining snack credits at the Main Street Bakery and got a slew of sweet treats. Not knowing if we would eat some in the car on the way home, I took a handful of the printed napkins and put them in our bag. We held off snacking until we got home, but we still had a handful of napkins to use. So, we used these napkins for a couple of days until there was one left. I ended up saving it and joked to my husband that we need to go back to get more.

So, I guess I'm a bit bummed that they aren't printed anymore, but I just think it's funny because we never paid attention to the napkins until a couple of months ago.

To be fair, ~90% (or more) of this thread is either making napkin jokes, belittling the OP for being disappointed at the lack of napkins, or trying to explain it a bit to put into perspective (or just talking about other stuff). So it's likely a page or two of obsession, 13-14 pages of random stuff.

Since we don't get to go to Disney nearly as often as I'd like, I did notice the napkins, almost right off. In '08 we ate at Sci-Fi and I didn't use my napkin so I brought it home. It still sits in my 'disney window' and I see it and smile. When we went back in '10, we ate a Sci-Fi again, and I was surprised that the napkin was the generic Disney Parks, the kind you get at the CS places. I'm so glad that we got take-away our last day in '08 for the kids meals, 'cause we got re-useable mickey shaped plates with covers. We use and re-use them weekly. Now kids meals come on paper plates. I miss the little details.

To me, Disney going green is more important than getting cute napkins. If thats the reason they changed to the plain ones, i fully support them.

Sorry if this has already been said, but this change doesn't have a thing in the world to do with being green - it's cost cutting, plain and simple.

Does anyone remember in the late 90s when Disney installed.soap dispensers in the showers at Dixie Landings and stopped providing lids and straws in the food court - complete with signage about being environmentally friendly of course? I was stunned at the time that the Deluxes kept.their amenities while the mods got the cutbacks - for the enviroment...did make me understand how things work though. I can only guess that too much guest feedback made that pass,

Sorry for the ramble - my point is it's all about the $.

Then we should probably be annoyed at all the people who took home dozens or more of the free "Souvenirs "

For new resorts. For upgraded resorts. For new rides. For updated rides. For expanded parks. For free wi-fi.

I get being disappointed that something small, but neat, is being done away with. I don't get the insistence that all Disney does is cut things, that they never add to the guest experience. That is blatantly false!!!

Whatever cost they have recovered from changing out the napkins would come nowhere near the cost of financing the FLE, and frankly, WDW was waaaaaay behind the curve on free Wifi. That was pretty embarassing. And anyone familiar with the hotel industry will say you must update/remodel your hotel rooms every few years, if not to keep them current and stylish then at least due to wear and tear. Otherwise you will lose guests, tarnish your reputation and consequently lose money. I would not be too quick to give Disney props for updates they need to do in order to compete in business. Sometimes it is the extras that make the difference.

Fact is, these past few years Disney has had more breakdown and closures than ever before. Compound that with the cutbacks (napkins, monorails, changes to DDP) and the economy, it is truly amazing that TDC can still get away with raising prices on admission, hotels and food. However, you can only ride the coattails of your historic reputation for so long before it catches up with you. TDC marketing is a wonder of this world.

Hear hear! Im paying for another trip with the increased prices :lmao:

TDC marketing is a wonder of this world.

That is true! That's one of the reasons why I am surprised about the generic napkins.

The more your logo is out there, the more people keep you in the front of their minds. Several people on this thread alone have said that having the logo napkins in their home have reminded them it's time to plan another vacation.

Why wouldn't TDC take advantage of that opportunity?

Printing your logo on a napkin is about as inexpensive as it gets for advertising costs. Napkins often go home with guests who scribble notes, addresses, and phone numbers on the back. They make great promotional items! Companies have been using them for years.

I wonder what Disney is thinking.

LOL at "We liked them so we took a year's supply of them home with us." Put two and two together folks.

For all those who are upset that they no longer have free sourvineers to take home, are you now going to buy a pack of disney printed napkins from WDW to take home?

I don't think Disney has to do what the rest of the hotel industry has to do to stay in business. They are part of a vacation destination that must make other companies green with envy. People would still stay at the moderate resorts if they had standard beds and no wi fi. They could have just upgraded the rooms as they have in the past, and not upgraded the bedding. And the rooms still would have been booked. So yeah, I give Disney props for going above and beyond what they have to.

It will never cease to amaze me that people are so quick to bash the Disney company for any small thing they don't like, but won't give them any credit for what they do add to their parks and resorts. But that is kind of the way some people are, quick to deride, slow to praise.

Just moving this so folks can continue with the discussion as it is no longer helpful for trip planning :)

~If Disney finds cheaper napkins that both save money and the destruction of rain forests, I'll take it! Disney is going to cut out the super cute napkins anyway, so at least there is a great cause behind it. :goodvibes

~The main incentive for going green is to save money, the bonus is helping the environment, this is hardly a new concept, lol. Disney has been very upfront about the money they've saved by going green. The color is green for a reason ($$$$$)! :goodvibes

~Article: --->
Disney claims it's saved about $60 million over 10 years on environmental programs, mostly through reducing the amount of paper used. They also re-use TV sets and installed a "reusable mug program," which alone saved a half million dollars.

~There are tons of examples, just like when it became standard for hotels to only change sheets every few days or once a week instead of every night. The hotel saves money in labor, water, utilities, and general wear and tear, but this also benefits the enviroment.

~As an indvidual, if I trade in my huge gas guzzling luxury suv for a mini cooper or something and join a carpool, I benefit financially in a big way, by saving lots of cash in fuel and maintenance costs, while reducing my carbon footprint.

~Anything that's energy efficient is hot right now, because people want to save money on their utilities first, but they are also helping the environment by using less energy.

Then we should probably be annoyed at all the people who took home dozens or more of the free "Souvenirs "
~LOL. I remember when Disney hotel Concierge Levels would set out individual sized bottled water for guests -- for the taking. Then, came that fateful day when Concierge Level replaced the plastic individual water bottles, with a few large glass Evian bottles of water, for everyone to share in the lounge.

~Now, guests have to request the large glass bottled water to take back to their room. I'll never forget how angry people were, but it turned out housekeeping kept finding tons of unopened or barely used water bottles leftover in the rooms, not to mention the guests who took as much free bottled water as they could carry home, lol.

~It's obvious that Disney is saving a lot of money by eliminating the free bottled water but it also cuts down on excess and waste while helping the environment.

~Disney will continue to test the market by cutting as much as possible, but they are also adding things. When Disney starts losing money, they will bring certain luxuries back, like the merchandise recently. I've also noticed some new creative dining selections making their way back on to the menu(s) after years of cutting and watering the menu(s) down.
