Names that only old

We must have the same grandmothers! :goodvibes

I love old-fashioned names. Names we're considering if we have another girl (or two): Eleanor, Hazel, Cecilia

I like those, with Hazel being my favorite.:) Cecilia/ Cecelia/ Celia is somewhat popular around here with the young girls and wouldn't really be considered old-fashioned anymore.

A name not heard alot is Rosemary. I was 20 before I heard my name for another person. altho names do come around, just 3 weeks ago someone heard my name and said they had named their child Rosemary.

Hazel and Ida. My grandmothers.

I happen to LOVE the name Hazel and I was thrilled when an acquaintance named her daughter Hazel.

Hazel is my great-grandmother's name.

I love it too...I like a lot of the names on these lists:confused3...I mean, some really are cringe-worthy nowadays, but I think some are beautiful.

Gretchen is not going to like this news....

I'm telling her you said this.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I know of a young Gretchen too.

When I was a teenager I used to babysit for a family that had a daughter named Rosemary and a son named Bruce, both would be in thier early 20's now. At the time I wondered why they gave their kid old people names, but now I happen to like them.

All four of my grandparents had names that you don't hear anymore.

Erma
Dolly
Derward
Esker

Ethel (my grandmother)

My grandmother's name too! :thumbsup2

My grandfather is also a Norman. Although he's no longer married to Ethel...he traded her in for a younger model named Anna. :lmao:

I also have a niece named Estelle. But I think it's cute, even though everyone gave her grief about Estelle Getty.

Some of our family names that have gone out of fashion:

Lloyd
Earlfred
Chester
Oscar

Hazel
Viola
Shirley
Helen
Irene
Eugenia (she always went by "Genie")
Mabel
Bernice
Barbara
Lorraine

Dorothy (paternal grandmother)
Dorothea (maternal grandmother)
Agnes (7 years ago I had a student named this)
Sally (the generic name I use in class)
Mildred (Millie)

I'm a Carla and I was one of two in my entire school - I loved it. I didn't have to be known by my last initial. As a teacher, I have had years where I have had 3 Brittanys in class and 3 Jacobs in class. I'm not a huge fan of the "trendy" names. DH and I will have a tough decision to make when naming our child - being a teacher has ruined some names for me.

Old-fashioned names are very much in vogue right now. All of my daughter's friends have either an "old-fashioned" name or something trendy like all the Caden, Jaden, Hayden, Brayden, etc. names. Names that are very popular today like Ella, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Olivia, etc. were all considered old-fashioned names when I was growing up.

My youngest is 4. Here is a list of some of her friends with "old-fashioned" names from preschool, church, play group, etc. with their ages beside their names:

Frances (3) sometimes called Franny
Sylvia (4), called Sylvie
Josephine (4), called Josie
Lillian (4), called Lily
Amelia (4)
Ruby (2)

Boys:
Charles (3), called Charlie
Miles (5)
George (2)

Personally, I love the names Josephine with Josie as a nickname, Audrey, and Miles and one of my favorite names is Amelia with a nickname of Mia. My 4 year old daughter has an old-fashioned name too (not any of the above) but her name is in the top 100 baby names on the Social Security list for last year so I think it's pretty common.

Names that I think are still outdated are names like Barbara, Shirley, Gladys, Peggy, Linda. These are names that were popular in the 30's -50's and just haven't had time to make a comeback yet in my opinion. Maybe we will have grandchildren or great-grandchildren with these names!

I work with kids, so I hear them all. There are a few boys' names that are gone. Bob and Bill come to mind. Now they are called William, Liam, Robert and Robbie.

Helen was 2 of my grandmothers names (which is NOT my name although some people seem to think it is...), the others were MaryLou and Anne... My grandfathers were Charles (along with my dad, Robert, and I never met any of my greatgrand fathers they were dead before I was born and for the life of me I can't think of their names right now..

I've seen it too. I'm glad. I love classic names.

Maureen isn't that common any more although it was at one time.

We have some young family members with old fashion names, Timothy, Charles and Lloyd come to mind. I know a toddler named Mable. My nephew was just born on Friday and they named him Brooks John:lovestruc

Funny how some people associate some names with someone who should be old, heavy, unattractive, uneducated, so on, where others may look at the name as really pretty. Some of the names mentioned and I have to admit I did not go through all the pages I thought were very pretty. So as not to step on any toes I will not mention which ones. ;)

Some names have a "stigma" attached to them for some reason and yet people give their newborns the name. Have to stop and think, at one time each of those names had a baby, later small child that lived up to and grew up with the name. So who's to say what name is old, or horrible. It is all in each person's preference.

I know this was suppose to be a fluff thread, so lets continue on. Just wondering out loud.

Gladys
Evelyn
Rosemary
Carol
Fred
Arthur
Estelle
Debra
Mable
Linda
Beverly
Stanley
Walter
Harold

Just for those of you who have mentioned Hazel, here is a youtube video of one of my favorite songs from the 1960s:

DH and I are having trouble deciding on names for our child. As a teacher, there are lots of names I won't even consider! Our grandparents were Mildred, Ethel, Mabel, and Ruby, and Clifford, Leslie (a man), Warren, and Fred. We won't burden our child with any of those names! My mom and I were just talking about "boy" names that are now considered "girl" names, like Carol, Stacey, Tracy, and Leslie. She grew up with boys with those names, and nowadays you probably wouldn't encounter a boy named Carol!

My son has a 13 year old friend named Walter.

Let's see:

Percival
Agnes
MacArthur
Cleo
Arthur
Clovis
Mattie
Myrna
Mulvana
Eugene
Marlene
Darlene

The above are people who are either from my family or friends of my parents.
