Our town lists the names of all kids in grades 6-12 who make the honor roll in the local newspaper. The list indicates who has made honors, high honors and highest honors. Does your town do this and do you agree or disagree with it?

My paper does this and I was in it I think every 9 weeks last year and hopefully make it again this 9 weeks. I think its good. My grandparents LOVE seeing the names of their grandkids in the paper, even if it is in real tiny font in a little tiny section of the paper.

I think it's a great idea. My local papers do this all the time. They also, at the end of the school years, spotlight the to 10 students of graduating classes of the local communities.

I think it's great for families to showcase their children's achievements. I think that it is important for kids to feel recognized for their honors and academic achievements and I think that posting their names and/or pics in the local newspaper is a great way to showcase that.

they do this in my town..i used to lvoe seeing my name...it was nice to have a little recognition

I loved seeing my name every nine weeks in the newspaper for making honor roll --- and now I enjoy seeing my children's names.

It takes a lot of work and effort to achieve those high grades and the recognition is very well deserved.

I think it's great. My 13 year old son works very hard in school and has been thrilled to see his name in there every time. We also seperate it into Honor Roll, High Honor Roll and High Honor Roll with Distinction. It's also nice for the grandparents to see and it makes nice clippings for his scrapbook. :flower:

Are you asking because you're thinking is it safe or not?

Or because it hurts people not listed?

I think its a good idea. I used to love getting my name in the paper - and it certainly wasn't ever in there for athletics! :rotfl:

I love it...but then again, my kids are part of that list each marking period, so of course I'm biased towards it.

I'm puzzled by why someone would disagree with this. Academic achievement should be noted and honored, and this is very appropriate. And BTW, I'm saying this as the mom of two very high achieving kids who have been in the papers many times for honor roll and other academc honors and one whose name was NOT on the honor roll list in our newspaper last spring.

Our town does it and I've never even considered it to be anything but great. You certainly see enough bad published about kids, so the good should certainly be published, too. Our paper ran a full page article with lots of pictures of the Freshman football players volunteering their time to load trucks with supplies for Katrian victims. DS loved seeing his picture there.

I always liked seeing dd's name in the paper when she made the honor roll and the times she wasn't in there probably gave her some inspiration to do a better job next semester.

Our local newspaper does it too. Of course when we were in Baltimore, they didn't because it was too much.

I agree with the thought that you always see athletic accomplishments, why not academic.

Our paper does this, and yes, I think it's a good thing. Ds's grandparents--who live @700 miles away and only see him 1-2x a year--love getting the paper clipping with his name in it.

No problem with it here either. It gives a little extra something for a student to strive for.

Our paper usually does it and I agree with the other posts--I think kids who work hard enough to get honor roll should be recognized for it.

However, last year there were some complaining parents saying it hurt the kid's feelings who didn't make the honor roll.

Just because someone else didn't receive an honor doesn't mean that those who do can't be commended publically for it.

My school also had profiles of the top ten each year for graduation. It was a big goal of mine to be one of those ten, and I was (out of 350 students). I felt really bad for my friend who was #11, but that's just how it goes sometimes.

Honor roll is....an Honor.

Just like achievements in sports are celebrated and often printed--I see no problems with printing acadamec achievement.

I don't see the controversy either.

I agree with you, but there has been talk about not doing it in some schools/area in CA. Some people feel it hurts the kids feeling that don't make it, and that it will make them just give up. ( This is part of that " we need to be more PC. " ) I think its stupid, but some folks are not happy unless they are crying about something. :confused3

I say show those kids names off in big bold print, and let the world know we are proud of them.

Cheers: :cool1:
