I changed my nail polish on my toes yesterday and I think I have a fungus on one of the big toenails.

Do you know of any homeopathic cures for this. I hate the thought of taking an antifungal med for a long time. I don't care about the use of the drug but I care about the cost of the drug.

Any ideas?

Are you assuming you have a fungus just because your nail turned yellow? Extended use of nail polish will cause this. Try not using polish on your nails for awhile and see if it clears up.

If it is a fungus, I have no home remedy for you. Good luck!

If it is a nail fungus my advice would be to go to the doctor. You don't want your nail to come off.

See, it's not yellow (yet), it's white. I'm assuming fungus but in a more early stage.

Maybe I will call my doctor. I'd prefer to nip it in the bud when it won't take as long to treat. (Hopefully)

Cider vinegar applied twice a day does work, but it takes about 6 months. Apply with a medicine dropper and let it air dry. You need to be patient and consistent with the applications. But it does work. :thumbsup2

DH is dealing with a nail fungus...he is not on an oral med but a topical...its taking care of it nicely!! Go to the drs.
My DH also was told by the dr. to LYSOL your shoe each night too.

IN the mean time...its sounds strange...but Vicks rub...you know the stuff you put on your chest...put some of that on it.

Go to the Walgreens, etc and in the false nail section they should sell a little bottle of antifungal cream. It's about $20.00 but it works well.

My mom used the white vinegar on her toenail--2 times a day for 6 months. It worked for her--it did not work for me.

Vicks Vapor Rub is also supposed to work. Any internet search will turn up the directions for these therapies.

If you go to the doctor he/she will either put you on Lamisil (nasty stuff) or give you the Penlac polish which doesn't always work well.

I ended up not tolerating Lamisil well and went to a foot doctor, had my toenail removed (not as bad as it sounds) and never had another problem.

My doctor told me if I ever think I have nail fungus to use Vick's vapor rub, rub it into the affected nail everynight. She said it takes about 8 months though, as the old nail will have to grow out.

I have used the Vicks vapor rub too. It does work, but it takes a long time - you have to apply it consistently for at least six months to see the results. I was afraid it would come back, so I have just kept doing the Vicks as part of my after-shower routine. I have a scrub brush that I scrub my toes and toenails with in the shower and then dry off my feet really well and apply the Vicks on, around, and even try to get it up and under the end of the nail. As an added bonus, my toes are always clean, soft, and smooth now!

The Vicks vapor rub works but it takes a looooong time. Try OREGANO OIL, you can get it at a health food store, I've heard it works wonders and in a short time.

My dad swears by Lysterine mouth wash. You soak your foot in it. Like the other remedies, it takes forever and you have to be consistent, but it works.

I like the sound of "a short time." I'll have to find some of this!

I've used Vitamin E, just break one open and rub on nail and also into the base of the nail. Again, takes awhile for the nail to grow out. I would think Listerine would work because it's an angi-fungal also; my mom used to use it for dandruff years ago :scared1:

Our newspaper has an ask the Dr column and this was in it last week.
He said to go to the pharmacy and ask for clear iodine and paint the toenail every day. It takes about a month for the healthy nail to be seen. then keep painting the toenail until it comes in totally.
Any time you have fungus you have to continue until the nail comes back clear. Even the medications take 3-6 months. And most insurances won't pay for those and they are expensive.

IF you have to go the route of the medicine Wal-Mart now carries the generic for only $4!!! I know because I had to take it last year.

I had it once and it is persistent, would not go away
so I used the med from the doc, I would do the same
thing again rather then fool with the other stuff. If you
can get the generic for the $4.00 walmart price it is more
then worth it!
