Thinking of 2013. This is what we want. Oceanfront, 2 bedroom ( would be 2 adult couples going), easy beach access, golf courses with reasonable fees. Other things for adults to do. Would like a condo, so we could cook meals. Want to rent for a week. Like Sat to Sat. Would like a nice pool and hot tub. We are thinking between 1000 a wk.for the Condo.Could go little more or less. Have any ideas. Which would you go to?

I think it will be difficult to find a condo at HHI for 1,000. HHI is very expensive, especially if your're going during the spring and summer. Green fees are easliy going to run $100, maybe more. Hilton Head is more upscale than Myrtle Beach. The beaches are wider and closer to being in a natural state than those at Myrtle. Myrtle is much more spread out, about 50 miles from North Myrtle to the South Strand. You'll find Myrtle to be more affordable than HHI. They're many hotels at Myrtle that offer golf packages that include daily green fees. Not sure if the same is true of HHI.

Have been to Myrtle twice and wanted to try Hilton Head.
Myrtle is much cheaper. I also doubt you could get Oceanfront at HH for 1K during the summer.

I have researched a visit to HH but found it very difficult to find oceanfront at all, most resorts seem to be a little inland with a shuttle to the beach.

Myrtle has hundreds of beachfront options.

I just turned down a condo on Myrtle for the week after next for a total of $900 total oceanfront. We decided to visit Panama City instead.

HH. Never been ,but you couldn't pay me to go back to Myrtle Beach.

Yes, it's sad what has happened to Myrtle Beach over the last 20 years. I vacationed there frequently from the 1960's to early 80's as its close to where I live. It was once a great place to go, especially the south and north ends. But now its overdeveloped with lots of traffic, especially in the summer. I usually go in the fall to hit the outlet malls for Christmas shopping but that's about it.

I looked into condos at HHI last summer. The island is chock full of them. I didn't care about oceanfront, and found many within walking distance for the 1st two weeks of August under $1000. HHI is full of "canal view" condos, so you still have a pretty view. We didn't go, so I don't know how much taxes etc add to the cost. Here in Virginia Beach, taxes and fees add several hundred dollars to a weekly stay.

Haven't been to Myrtle Beach in over 20 years, however we're going back there the first week in September.

I've been to HHI several times. Love it there. However, it is pricey. And I know of very few oceanfront (or even oceanview) condos.

If you can wing HHI, I'd do it. It's much more adult oriented than Myrtle Beach. More laid back; more peaceful. I'd try to get into Sea Pines Plantation if at all possible (however the greens fees at Sea Pines' Harbour Town Golf Course is high).

That said, can't wait to take my DGD to Myrtle Beach.

HHI is much more of an adult oriented beach getaway. And probably because of that, it's quite a bit pricier. I've never stayed in a condo there, just one of the beachfront hotels. It's also a much smaller scope than MB. But it's certainly more peaceful and serene.

MB has it's appeal, much better shopping, more things to do, and cheaper prices. I guess you'll just have to weigh what is most important to you for your trip.

I would say HH. That's just because I've been wanting to go to Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort!

We went this past March/ April. We loved it. Hung out at the beach, beach house pool, & resort pool. Only thing I wish was different is if it had a table service & it was next to the beach. It was so relaxed and slow pace.

Myrtle Beach would be more in line with your budget. We are going there for a week long stay later this month BUT Hilton Head is much nicer. We chose MB for our beach vacation this summer because the price was right and the kids like it because of all the things to do there. HH is pricier and has a more laid back vibe. My two favorite beach places, however, are Wild Dunes at Isle of Palms near Charleston and Kiawah Island which is also near Charleston.

That's awesome! Sounds like a great, relaxing vacation. :) It's on my to-do list!

If you are doing adults only I would suggest Hilton Head, because I felt it was a more mature area, nicer resturants etc. As a family vacation with kids in tow I always prefer Myrtle Beach.

Hilton Head is the place for 2 couples to go.

You should be able to find a condo at your price range.

Don't listen to people saying golf is $100 per round. It IS 100/round if you want to play at the best courses early in the morning.

Last week we played the Palmetto Dunes Robert Trent Jones, and Fazio courses, (some of the best on the island), after 12 noon for $69 - $79.

Waiting until afternoon will put you in the $49 - $79 price range at MANY very nice HH courses.

All beaches in HH are public and there is public access everywhere so staying oceanfront MAY not be that big of a deal to you.

Litchfield Resort, about 20 minutes south of Myrtle sounds like it might be perfect for you. We love it. Plenty of condos, some oceanfront, some on golf course, but within driving range of everything.

Hilton Head is SO beautiful and much more laid back than Myrtle IMHO. From what I remember from living there it is expensive. I'm not certain that you would be able to find a condo for that price during the summer months but it's worth checking in to.

That being said we are in the Myrtle Beach area at least 3 times a year. IMHO if you are looking for less of a "party" atmosphere and are wanting something a little more laid back I would go with the city of North Myrtle Beach or Cherry Grove. (NOT the northern part of Myrtle Beach.) We prefer to stay in that area - it's a little quieter - or the southern part. I'm going to agree with the PP that Litchfield is beautiful. There are golf courses scattered throughout the area so no matter where you go you should be close to one (or six).

I have to agree - I love HHI the best, so relaxed and laid back. But we have stayed at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort in Pawley's Island the last couple of years and it has the same vibe as HHI. You can get great deals through its own website.

I would also recommend North Myrtle Beach (city not just northern part of Myrtle Beach) too as it is also nicer than Myrtle Beach itself.

We definitely prefer HH. Love the atmosphere and great restaurants. You may find it difficult to find a 2 bdr condo on the beach for $1k. The prices are less on the north end of the island, but I would rather stay in Sea Pines or Palmetto Dunes.

We LOVE Hilton Head Island. We used to go to MB, but about 10 years ago found beautiful, quiet, lovely HHI:goodvibes We have never been back to MB and dont have any desire. Too many young kids running amuck and too crowded.
We always rent a condo and go through www.vrbo.com
Last year we stayed in Palmetto Dunes at the Moorings. It was literelly a stones throw to the beach and we had a 2BR, 3BA condo. It was perfect:goodvibes
Here is a link to the actual condo we stayed at

We love to rent bikes (they will deliver them to your condo and then pick them up) and ride them on the beach and throughout the resort.

We have also stayed at Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club Resort. They are a bit older units, but are oceanfront (in buildings A, B, C and Admirals Row). You could get 2 one bedroom units in the same building. The two bedroom units have a queen bed in one room, and twins in the other...probably not ideal for 2 adult couples. HHB&TC are much more affordable. They are in the Folly Field area. Here is a link to one of the one bedroom units...we have not stayed at this one, but Im posting for comparison.

I am not a seafood lover, but my DH is and I would suggest eating at the Sea Shack if you go to HHI. It is a favorite with the locals (and got a big shout out years ago from Rachel Ray) and gets very crowded. Go during the off times for a meal and plan on taking it back with you to your condo. Seating is very limited and people wait for a LONG time in the line to place an order. It looks very sketchy, but seafood lovers LOVE it:thumbsup2

When we arent hitting up Walt Disney World...we head to our other love...HHI :)
